Seven Sucky Miles

in All Posts

Why, hello there!  Sorry for the afternoon disappearing act.  I got sucked into a work vortex of productiveness

Prior to the work vortex, I got sucked into a running vortex of doom.

IMG_1705

Actually, it wasn’t total doom because I got to run with Jen!

My normal running buddy – Nicole – needed to do her long run on Monday, but I was still recovering from my triathlons this weekend, so I was stuck doing 10 miles alone.  I was scared.

2011-09-28_2021

But Jen came to my rescue with an offer to run 7 or 8 with me!  I was so happy that I nearly squeezed her to death when she arrived at our house.

Unfortunately – it was a sucky run.  It was very, very warm out, and I had just eaten a handful of fiberific crackers, so my tummy was hurting the entire time.  Stupid decision to go for the crackers, I know.  And I was chugging Gatorade because it was hot and I was gunning for 10.  The Gatorade tasted like syrup.  Couldn’t choke it down.

Also, I just wasn’t feeling the run.  You know how it is… once you ‘decide’ it’s going to be a sucky run, it’s hard to go back.  So I just ran 7 with Jen and called it a day.  Honestly… I’ll take it.  It was ROUGH.  I couldn’t have pulled another 3 out.

Dinner was grand!

IMG_1755

I mixed some kidney beans, pinto beans, and chickpeas together, tossed in some raw shredded collard greens, and threw in a handful of shredded cheddar cheese…

IMG_1754

And baked two delicious enchiladas.  With a big dollop of Holy Deliciousness Hummus on the side.

IMG_1761

Friends, I leave you with this photograph of Maggie, looking all sorts of ridiculousness and neediness.

IMG_1746

She’s a beaut!

First off, love the picture of Maggie! It should make you smile although you had a terrible run. I definitely have those runs (too often for my liking) and just don’t enjoy a single second of it. But 7 is better than 0 so I think thats pretty great!

  • Sara @ RunnerWife September 28, 2011, 8:36 pm

I ran 7 miles today too! It wasn’t great but it wasn’t awful either. I am so ready for fall weather to be here full time! It is my favorite time of year and makes running so much easier!

  • Kelly September 28, 2011, 8:39 pm

Your friend Jen rocks! Wish I had those leg muscles!

    • Caitlin September 28, 2011, 8:40 pm

She’s a personal trainer/yoga instructor. That photo doesn’t even do her arms justice. She could crush me like a tiny bug.

  • Rachel September 28, 2011, 9:07 pm

Bahaha Maggie is fabulous. My dachshund is EXACTLY the same way, in all respects you’ve mentioned. Love them. 😀

  • kathleen @ the daily crumb September 28, 2011, 9:07 pm

i feel like i can tell within the first quarter mile if the run will be good or sucky. and if it’s feelin bad, i immediately check out.

  • Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat September 28, 2011, 9:08 pm

I want to give Maggie a big cuddle, she is so cute!!! That’s great that Jen came to your rescue – long runs are so much better with company!

  • Kristen (inspiredbydooce) September 28, 2011, 9:13 pm

7 is definitely better than zero. I hate when tummy troubles ruin a run.

  • Lee September 28, 2011, 9:15 pm

I had a sucky 5 miles today. I always feel like when I have a bad run, it means that the next one will be great.

You and I are training for the same half marathon, by the way.

  • Gina @ Running to the Kitchen September 28, 2011, 9:17 pm

I love how her lip is caught it her mouth. Makes her look “special” 😉
    7 is better than none!

  • Hillary September 28, 2011, 9:19 pm

Seven miles is better than zero miles, no?!

  • Kristin September 28, 2011, 9:22 pm

omg how i love her and all weenies!!!! She looks SOOO precious in that pic! and i love her little smirk and big eyes! Great job on ur run!! 7 is still a GREAT accomplishment!!!!

  • Heather September 28, 2011, 9:26 pm

I totally now what you mean…you just know when a run is going to suck. Cheers to you for still cranking out 7 miles and listening to your body! <3

    Stay lovely,
    Heather

  • Mary September 28, 2011, 9:31 pm

Seven miles is better than no miles… right? at least you went out and did it! I ran this evening and it was hot and miserable.

come on FALL! I’m ready for long sleeves and easier breathing.

  • Averie @ Love Veggies and Yoga September 28, 2011, 9:31 pm

Glad you got sucked into productive endeavors.

I am the queen of getting sucked into UN-productive ones 🙂

  • Erin (Travel, Eat, Repeat) September 28, 2011, 9:36 pm

Great night for enchiladas, at least here in DC where it’s chilly and rainy. Bring on comfort food if we can’t have the sun!

  • Dani September 28, 2011, 9:40 pm

Oye, i have a 10 miler scheduled for this weekend- I hope I can get through it!

  • Sarena (The Non Dairy Queen) September 28, 2011, 9:40 pm

Yeah for a workout buddy! Sounds like a good time. Dinner looks delicious! I love beans in a tortilla! YUM!

  • Chelsea September 28, 2011, 9:41 pm

We had a motivational speaker today at school and I immediately thought of you haha. I even told my teacher about you and how it would be so cool if you came over and spoke 🙂

  • Angie @ Musings of a Violet Monkey September 28, 2011, 9:47 pm

It was so darn hot in Clt today! What is up with our weather these days?

Maggie is adorable. (And I’m a “big dog” person). 😉

  • Joelle (On A Pink Typewriter) September 28, 2011, 9:50 pm

Gatorade like syrup- ick!! What a nice friend though! 🙂 You make Charlotte sound like such a lovely and friendly place to live!

  • maria @ Chasing the Now September 28, 2011, 9:55 pm

Actually, I think that is a great photo of Maggie!

  • J3nn (Jenn's Menu and Lifestyle Blog) September 28, 2011, 9:56 pm

Aww, sorry you didn’t have the greatest run. Maybe next time.

Love that pic of Maggie!! She is so lovable!!! 😀

  • Ali @ Ali Runs September 28, 2011, 10:01 pm

I can never drink straight up Gatorade on a long run because it’s way to thick. The only way I can drink it is if it’s watered down. Good job getting the mileage in!

  • kristen September 28, 2011, 10:08 pm

Dont knock the fact you still did 7 miles! thats still awesome!

  • Carla @ Will Run for Health September 28, 2011, 10:10 pm

Wow…I guess I always knew that Maggie had short legs but that picture really accentuates how tiny they are. She’s basically all feet and ears! So precious!

  • Sara September 28, 2011, 10:14 pm

    I love Maggie’s sweet mug!

  • Ash @ Good Taste Healthy Me September 28, 2011, 10:16 pm

But you still did 7! So that’s awesome!

  • Alett September 28, 2011, 11:01 pm

Great job getting out there! YOu should be proud of getting a good chunk of that run done!

    yayy!!

I can tell Maggie is proud of you too : )

  • Sam September 28, 2011, 11:02 pm

I so know how those runs feel. Uggh. 7 is still great though 🙂 Dinner looks amazing too!

  • Deva at deva by definition September 28, 2011, 11:02 pm

I know that running feeling all too well! I think it’s great you kept going. I think Gatorade can be syrupy, but I love it ice cold right after a long run.

  • Michelle September 28, 2011, 11:17 pm

Don’t get down on yourself for a less than perfect workout! Remember the guy at the pool? At least you got your booty movin’ today! Hopefully the weather and motivation will be better tomorrow!

And I think all of your photos have finally brainwashed me. Going to the store this weekend for MMM Sauce ingredients…

  • Annette @ EnjoyYourHealthyLife September 28, 2011, 11:36 pm

I am SO not a fan of long runs that are horrible….Yikes. They are bad. I love a good run though, that makes for a great day 🙂

  • Diana @ frontyardfoodie September 28, 2011, 11:38 pm

Sorry for the sucky run! At least you still got seven miles in, that’s something to be proud of.

    I want your dinner, mega.

  • Kate (What Kate is Cooking) September 28, 2011, 11:54 pm

I think the quality of runs is determined by my attitude. I had a shitty attitude about my long run last Saturday and ended up cutting it 9 miles short!

  • Khushboo September 29, 2011, 12:48 am

Even though you planned 10 miles, 7>0 so well done for getting out there :)! Also have you tried audio books in your run? I tried it for my long run this morning and loved it–> it’s like running with a friend without having to talk back!

  • Anne September 29, 2011, 4:55 am

LOL, my dog (we think he’s a mix of min-pin, dachshund, chihuahua, jack russell, and many other short hair small breeds) makes this EXACT face sometimes. When he does, we start calling him Bernie because he makes the same facial expression as Bernie in Weekend at Bernies.

  • Lesley September 29, 2011, 5:17 am

    7 may be 0! 🙂

I love how Maggie looks like she’s smirking slightly on the right side. Like, “Mom may think I’m slow and needy, but look who’s picture is on the blog again. Baby, I’m a star!” 😀

    • Lesley September 29, 2011, 5:19 am

Hmmm, this did an odd delete on my comment. That was supposed to be 7 may be less than 10, but it’s way greater than 0!! Not even gonna ask how it reduced it to 7 may be 0! hahaha, that doesn’t make me sound nuts at all…

  • Jenny September 29, 2011, 7:11 am

Caitlin have you tried Nuun? I don’t like Gatorade either but love Nuun!

  • Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin September 29, 2011, 7:45 am

I know exactly how you feel! My runs have been really crappy lately and I can’t figure out why. Congrats on doing 7 miles though – it’s awesome you could still run that far, even though you weren’t feeling it!

  • Kara September 29, 2011, 7:53 am

I’m going to second the recommendation for Nuun or Nathan Catalyst instead of Gatorade if you’re just running 10 miles. Personally I love Gatorade, but if it tastes too heavy, try the above drinks.

The race you’re training for is a half marathon and I don’t know if you mentioned exactly, but aren’t you running that race alone? Like you, I enjoy running with others, but if you’re racing alone then it might be beneficial to simulate race conditions occasionally. Personally, I run much faster alone without the talking distractions and generally push myself more. Just a thought 🙂

  • katie @ KatieDid September 29, 2011, 8:04 am

Even sucky runs make your stronger! In fact the suckiest runs probably make you the most strong…

  • Molly @ RDexposed September 29, 2011, 8:35 am

I love when dogs have no idea what their mouth is doing. Always funny.

And I refuse to even eat a grape 60 minutes before a run otherwise I have some tum cramping!

  • Jessica @ Jess Go Bananas September 29, 2011, 8:54 am

“once you ‘decide’ it’s going to be a sucky run, you can’t go back” –Totally agree! Whenever that happens at the beginning of my runs, I always try to refocus and counteract it by saying “this can turn out to be a fantastic run!”

  • Tiff @ Love Sweat and Beers September 29, 2011, 9:00 am

I’m sorry to hear you had a sucky run. I hate it when that happens. Luckily it wasn’t a sucky, lonely run

  • Laurie September 29, 2011, 9:05 am

Sorry about your run! Oh, Pretty girl Maggie!! 🙂

  • Ali @ Around the VeggieTable September 29, 2011, 9:22 am

OMG that Maggie picture is hilare!! Love it! I wish I had a Maggie 🙂 Don’t worry about the crap run…the bad ones help us appreciate the great ones even more!

  • Cat @Breakfast to Bed September 29, 2011, 10:07 am

I wanted to run 8 yesterday and ran 3 and did 15 minutes on the stairclimber of doom. I’m glad I did. My ass hurts soooo good.

  • Moni'sMeals September 29, 2011, 10:40 am

Glad you had the buddy system! Cute pics. 🙂

  • jamie @ cueyourlife September 29, 2011, 11:15 am

HATE sucky runs…BUT…the real question is, how do you feel this morning? JUST wrote about this myself! http://cueyourlife.com/2011/09/29/1493/

IF you feel ok this morning, even after a sucky run…your body did what it needed and you’re stronger for it! Whoot whoot!

  • Sarah September 29, 2011, 11:15 am

That sounds like a horrible run, but good job for listening to your body and cutting it short at 7, sometimes that’s the best thing you can do!

    • Amber K September 29, 2011, 12:46 pm

I totally agree! And at least the enchiladas were good 🙂

  • Mary @ Bites and Bliss September 29, 2011, 2:24 pm

It’s always so much more pleasant having someone to run with. My boyfriend comes with my on long runs and follows along with his bike. Seriously, there’s NO way I could do those runs by myself!

  • kwithme September 29, 2011, 2:29 pm

Must have been the day. I ran 5 miles today (long for me). In the first 1.25 miles, I had to retie a shoe, remove a rock from the shoe, got stung by a bee on the Achilles tendon and encountered 2 dogs without owners. I was at a wooded park and coming across a German Shepard and black lab without owners is kinda scary. Fortunately, they left me a alone but it certainly messed up my rhythm. The plus is that I finished in a good time and ran all but 20 feet.

  • Sophie @ threetimesf September 29, 2011, 5:43 pm

Look on the bright side – at least you got 7 in and had an awesome dinner! winner!

  • Jolene (www.everydayfoodie.ca) September 29, 2011, 11:53 pm

I just want to squeeze and hug that precious little Maggie.
