Home, Home at Last

The Huz and I were so bored on our first flight back home that we actually did the “healthy stretches” in the back of the US Airways magazine.  Recommended for in-flight relaxation! 🙂

IMG_7002

I actually did feel better after following the recommendations (which also included drinking lots of water).

IMG_7001 IMG_7000

We also snagged a large Jamba Juice at the Charlotte airport (yes, we flew into the Charlotte airport, then to Knoxville, picked up the dogs, and then drove back to Charlotte).  Maggie is way too mental to be boarded at a kennel so my mom watches her.

IMG_6996 IMG_6997

Our smoothie was a ‘fruit only’ blend and included banana, strawberries, and oranges.

We also found some pre-cut veggies at a little cafe.  Yay, greens!

IMG_6999

Once we arrived in Knoxville, I made a PB and jelly sandwich for the road:

IMG_7003

Fun fact: 96% of people put the peanut butter on before the jam. :)  I am in the majority!

IMG_7007

And a banana.

We’re exhausted – going to feed the dogs and lay in bed.

Are you a jam-first kind of person?

I also put the PB on first — maybe because the name is PB and jelly, not jelly and PB? Who knows.

I’m glad you’re home safe and sound!

  • Andi December 14, 2010, 9:57 pm

i prefer it right out of the jar..

    Congrats again : )

  • Rachel December 14, 2010, 9:59 pm

I’m a jam 1st person! Have to say I was surprised to read that most people put PB on 1st!

    • Samantha Angela @ Bikini Birthday December 15, 2010, 10:09 am

How do you spread the peanut butter once the jam is on? I find it easier to spread jam onto pb than the other way around.

      • JenATX December 20, 2010, 12:59 am

yep, this is exactly why you have to put the pb one first! i’d like to see the other 4% that try it the other way.. i imagine lots of pb sliding around on the jelly

  • Vicky @ eat live spin December 14, 2010, 10:01 pm

I actually put the pb on one piece of bread then jam on the other (doesn’t matter what order)… then put the two pieces of bread together. Do I fall into my own category?

    • Caitlin December 14, 2010, 10:05 pm

I think that’s how most people do it! But they do the PB side first 🙂

      • Baking 'n' Books December 14, 2010, 10:27 pm

I just put the PB and Jam on both sides 😉

        Get some sleep!

      • Vicky @ eat live spin December 14, 2010, 10:35 pm

All my friends put pb and then jam on top of the pb… I figured I was just a fish out of water. Congratulations! And have a good nights sleep with the doggies, they must be happy to see you guys.

  • Nicole @ yuppie yogini December 14, 2010, 10:16 pm

Yay–glad you’re home. So proud of you!

  • Kjirsten- Balanced Healthy Life December 14, 2010, 10:17 pm

I am def. peanut butter first, then jam!

  • VeggieGirl December 14, 2010, 10:19 pm

I’m in the majority too 😀

  • Mary @ Bites and Bliss December 14, 2010, 10:19 pm

4% of people put on the jam first? I guess it really doesnt matter, but I’ve always put on the sticky stuff first! 😛

  • Kristina @ spabettie December 14, 2010, 10:20 pm

ha… I always put peanut butter on first, because… I NEVER add the jelly! 🙂 I cannot stand pb + j. ew!

    (I know… I’m weird.)

  • Jen December 14, 2010, 10:21 pm

I’m in the minority; I put the jam on first because I tend to use the same knife for dipping into the peanut butter jar, and the jam washes off more quickly than peanut butter.

    • Marie December 14, 2010, 10:49 pm

      exactly. same here.

    • Amber K December 14, 2010, 11:54 pm

      EXACTLY!! 🙂

    • Anna December 15, 2010, 9:27 am

YES. I put the j on one slice, then wipe the knife clean on the bread before putting the pb on the other slice. pb in the jelly jar = nasssty.

    • Caitlin December 15, 2010, 9:57 am

      You guys are geniuses.

      • Caitlin December 15, 2010, 9:58 am

        Genuii?

    • Morgan @ Becoming Rooks December 15, 2010, 10:06 am

Oh yes, the less dishes to wash the better. It’s neat that US Airways magazine has in-seat friendly stretches in their magazine!

    • Jessica December 15, 2010, 2:35 pm

it’s clearly the most logical way. because also… i liked to like the PB off the knife once i’m done. no one wants a licked knife in their jam. 🙂

      • Jen December 15, 2010, 4:41 pm

        Haha truth!

    • Katie December 15, 2010, 7:15 pm

that’s exactly what I do! It’s easier to get the jam off, and when the PB comes second, you can lick it right off the knife 🙂

  • Lee December 14, 2010, 10:23 pm

I never thought about it before, but I definitely put the pb on first. I think because I don’t care if pb gets in the jelly jar but I do care if jelly gets in the pb. I guess I could just wash the knife!

  • Mrs. Muffins December 14, 2010, 10:23 pm

Crazy that you had to go through Charlotte, lol! Glad you made it home safe though and congratulations again! xx

  • the veg meg December 14, 2010, 10:25 pm

when I put the pb and jam on the same slice of bread, i do pb first, because i don’t think pb would go on top of jam as well as the other way around. BUT, when i make a sandwich, i do jam first — i re-use the spoon/knife and it’s way easier to clean it of jam than of pb!

    • Jazz December 14, 2010, 10:29 pm

Yeah, I think peanut putter wouldn’t spread on jam like jam can spread over peanut butter!

  • Maren December 14, 2010, 10:33 pm

I’m in the majority too. I can tell you why. Because I’m fine with having peanut butter in my jelly but no jelly in my peanut butter.

  • Meagan December 14, 2010, 10:34 pm

    That statistic is SO true!!!

  • Jasmine @ Eat Move Write December 14, 2010, 10:37 pm

I do PB first too. Mostly because the pb on the knife won’t show up in the jelly jar as much as the reverse. That’s a cool stat though.

  • Annette December 14, 2010, 10:40 pm

You should be exhausted! I eat almond butter (not PB), but I do almond butter first, before the jam/cream cheese/etc!

  • Ellen@FirednFabulous December 14, 2010, 10:42 pm

I’m not sure what I do first. I’d guess PB bc it’s harder to spread and I just want to get it OVER with. Ok, that doesn’t really make sense. It’s late, whateves 🙂

  • Laura December 14, 2010, 10:42 pm

Always PB first! I do peanut butter on both slices of bread, then jam in the middle.

  • Jen G. December 14, 2010, 10:43 pm

PB first! If you put PB on both pieces of bread, then put on the jam, the bread doesn’t get soggy.

    • Caitlin December 15, 2010, 9:59 am

      ohmigod. you are so smart!

  • kelsey December 14, 2010, 10:43 pm

I put a thin layer of peanut butter on BOTH sides of the bread, and then spread jelly on top of one of them. A neat trick my college roommate taught me – it prevents the bread from getting SOGGY on the jelly side! Works like a charm 🙂

  • Ali December 14, 2010, 10:43 pm

I put peanut butter on first, I think because the jelly will get in the pb if you put that on first! 🙂 common sense, obv!

  • Kristen December 14, 2010, 10:47 pm

I put the PB or AB on first because I feel like it “protects” the bread from the jam, jam is more likely to soak through into the bread and the nut butter creates a layer that the jam or jelly can’t get through. Yeah…I’ve definitely thought about that too much, but I really hate soggy bread.

  • Jess@atasteofconfidence December 14, 2010, 10:49 pm

    I’m in the majority, too!

  • Averie (LoveVeggiesandYoga) December 14, 2010, 10:53 pm

always PB first! Always. And I do Pb THICK on one side of bread. Jam on the other. Never both Pb & Jam on both pieces of bread. And then I flip it so the PB is on the bottom half, jam on top, and slice it diagonal. God, I sound anal. lol.

    • Wendy December 14, 2010, 10:55 pm

lol this is EXACTLY how I make PB&Js for my kids!

      • Averie (LoveVeggiesandYoga) December 14, 2010, 10:57 pm

omg, i do it this way for my child and hubs. The child is not quite 4 yrs and the hubs, well, he’s messy. And this cuts down on the mess factor, especially when packed in his lunches.

  • Lauren December 14, 2010, 10:57 pm

I always put PB first on one side and jam on the other side! I usually make pb & banana sandwiches now instead of pb & js. Congrats again on the GOTR award!

  • Laurie December 14, 2010, 11:17 pm

Maggie is too mental…..that is a riot!

  • Heather December 14, 2010, 11:17 pm

P.B. first, that’s the best part!

  • maria @ Chasing the Now December 14, 2010, 11:18 pm

PB first all the way. Because I run the knife along the edge of the bread to get the PB off before dipping it in the jam!

  • Sarra December 14, 2010, 11:19 pm

always peanut butter first! how does jam first even work? haha

  • Alexa @ The Girl In Chucks December 14, 2010, 11:27 pm

Nope! Peanut butter first all of the way!

  • Katheryn December 14, 2010, 11:30 pm

Well, I don’t like jelly on my sandwiches. Honey is the only way to go. So it’s peanut butter on one side and honey on the other. Yum!

  • Daezy December 14, 2010, 11:31 pm

LOL. I used to be a jam first person (because I used to like jam better and was so excited to get that stuff on first!), but my older brother started to complain about jam being in his peanut butter (he only made PB sandwiches… he couldn’t stomach jam) so I flopped the order. Now I like peanut butter better than jam, imagine that.

  • Allie (Live Laugh Eat) December 14, 2010, 11:32 pm

WHAT?! Wait a second, isn’t it a 10 hour drive from Charlotte to Knoxville? So you drove 20 hours? Send Maggie up here, I’ll take care of her!

    • Caitlin December 15, 2010, 9:59 am

      Nope 🙂 It’s 4 hours.

  • Amber K December 14, 2010, 11:34 pm

I always do jam first. It’s much easier to clean the knife of jam than of peanut butter! I never knew I was in a minority!

  • *Andrea* December 15, 2010, 12:06 am

funny fact!!! i never thought about that before but now that I am, i ALWAYS put pb on first! too funny.

    yummy looking sandwich 🙂

  • Natalie December 15, 2010, 12:12 am

    i’m a jelly first girl 🙂

  • Bizzle December 15, 2010, 12:33 am

The things we do for our fur-babys. Congrats on the win. Pb first, then jam.

  • Heidi - apples under my bed December 15, 2010, 1:02 am

I put PB first, then top it with jam, then add the other slice of bread & press down so it smooshes all together. mmmmmmmm. sweet dreams!
    Heidi xo

  • Danielle December 15, 2010, 1:44 am

I gotta say – PB first!

  • Whitney December 15, 2010, 4:42 am

This is so funny! Am I the only one who just puts the one she happens to reach for first on first?

    • Caitlin December 15, 2010, 10:00 am

Probably! It seems people have rather strong opinions on the best way to make a PBJ 🙂

  • Paige @Running Around Normal December 15, 2010, 6:56 am

Glad you made it home safe! I typically do the jam just so the peanut butter can warm up a little – it gets so stiff after being in the fridge.

  • chelsey @ clean eating chelsey December 15, 2010, 7:21 am

Peanut butter first – always! That way, if you have extra peanut butter, you can wipe it off on the other piece of bread so the jam jar doesn’t get all peanut buttery.

  • Sarena (The Non Dairy Queen) December 15, 2010, 7:32 am

PB first all the way! Glad you guys are home safely! I hope you got a good night’s sleep!

  • Faith @ lovelyascharged December 15, 2010, 8:17 am

Nope, definitely a peanut butter first kind of girl! I mean c’mon, it’s not called a jelly and peanut butter sandwich, is it?

  • Allie December 15, 2010, 8:23 am

I put pb on first! That’s cool that flights have in flight streatching guide haha, made me smile!

  • Stacy @ Every Little Thing December 15, 2010, 8:37 am

PB first, so the jelly doesn’t get in the PB jar 🙂

My dog is also too mental to be kenneled. She actually lives with my mom right now but hasn’t been kenneled in probably 4 years (she’s 7). My parents don’t do a lot of traveling so it’s perfect there for her, but if they do go away for the weekend, my brother or other family watch her. A bit inconvenient but it’s for her well-being so everyone makes do 🙂

  • jassy December 15, 2010, 8:59 am

i’ve never tried pb and jelly…just plain pb on bread 🙂

  • Amalfi Girl (EatRunHaveFun.blogspot) December 15, 2010, 8:59 am

It has been so long since I made a PB&J sandwich that I forgot how I do it…!

We leave our little pup (5 yr. old shih tzu rescue) at the doggy daycare center, so that she plays with the other dogs all day and then sleeps with them at night. She really likes that–do you have one like that by you?

    • Caitlin December 15, 2010, 10:01 am

Maggie would rather break her ceramic dog dish and gorge her eyes out with the shattered pieces than go to doggie day care. I’m serious!

  • Suzanne @ Continuing My Education December 15, 2010, 9:00 am

I am in the habit of putting on the jam first. My mom is highly allergic to peanut butter so I never wanted to contaminate the jam…and I also didn’t want to use two knives…solution = jam first ,then pb! Congrats on winning the positivity project!

  • Melissa @ Be Not Simply Good December 15, 2010, 9:16 am

I put the PB on first. My husband falls into the PB&J are gross together camp. I think they go together nicely. 🙂

  • Sohara December 15, 2010, 9:25 am

I’m in the minority that never ate PB&J as a kid! It’s such an American thing, and I grew up in Germany, so…well, it never entered my spectrum. But! I had a childhood treat that I still love to eat: toasted whole-grain bread spread with butter and topped with a spoonful of honey. And the butter goes on first. 😉 Mmmmmm.

  • Brittney December 15, 2010, 9:46 am

I actually don’t do it the same way every time… sometimes PB first, sometimes jelly. It doesn’t matter to me!

  • Kristen December 15, 2010, 9:53 am

PB first for sure. I think it’s because the PB is harder to spread than the jelly, so I take care of it first!

  • Evan Thomas December 15, 2010, 10:04 am

My mom always taught me to put peanut butter on both slices of bread and then jam in the middle. That way the bread didn’t get soggy by lunchtime.

  • Lauren @ Clean Eats in the Dirty South December 15, 2010, 10:06 am

i guess i’m in the minority too. i mix the two in a small bowl and then spread it on my bread! weird, but i like tasting both pb and j at the same time 🙂

  • Allison December 15, 2010, 10:08 am

PB & J sandwich making is serious business 🙂

  • Errign December 15, 2010, 10:08 am

I put the pb on first because I don’t want to get jam in my peanut butter & am WAY too lazy to wipe off my knife!

  • Olivia December 15, 2010, 10:09 am

    now i want PB&J!!!!

  • Carrie (Moves 'N Munchies) December 15, 2010, 10:50 am

ahah thats actually so interesting! I have always put the pb before the jam because thats how everyone else did it.!

  • Megan (Braise The Roof) December 15, 2010, 10:58 am

This is one of the funniest/best comment feeds I’ve seen in a while. It’s good to know we’re all so passionate. 🙂

ps, I’m a PB first girl, too. Wouldn’t want to rock the PB&J statistic boat.

  • Kiran December 15, 2010, 2:36 pm

I just spread PB on one and Jelly on the other slice 🙂

  • Shauna December 16, 2010, 7:47 am

I’m catching up on my finals-induced HTP backlog, and I felt compelled to comment here! I’m a peanut butter-first person too, and here’s why: After I’ve applied the jam and pressed the sandwich together, there’s still jam on the knife. So when I cut the sandwich in half, there’s a delicious line of jam on the edge of each half, which then soaks into the bread and adds a fruity extra touch of deliciousness.

However, if I think about it I find it makes more sense to do jam first, really. It’s easier to clean a jammy knife and transition to peanut butter than it is to clean a goopy peanut buttery knife to transition to jam. But I’m still peanut butter first all the way.

I think far too much about sandwich-making, methinks.

  • Shauna December 16, 2010, 7:51 am

I just went through the comments. WHY are people putting the peanut butter AND the jam on the same piece of bread? This is madness. I had no idea this was a thing.

    • Caitlin December 16, 2010, 9:27 am

      hahah i agree, total madness.

  • Lacey @ Lake Life December 17, 2010, 9:34 pm

Of course! It’s way too hard to spread peanut butter on jelly.
