Grill Your Sandwich

in All Posts

I am a HUGE fan of sandwiches.  Love them.  But I’ll be the first to admit that they get a little boring day after day.

Enter the George Foreman!  George is not just for college students.  George rules.

Step 1: Start with thick slices of crusty, whole wheat bread.

IMG_4177

Step 2:  Choose and prep the insides.  Today, I used onions, zucchini, feta, and parsley.

Step 3: Decide if any ingredients need to be pre-cooked.  Veggies should be grilled before going in between the slices or they will still be raw.

Step 4:  Grease the George Foreman with butter or olive oil.  Load up your sandwich, top with the other slice of bread, and press down.  Cook for 4 minutes or so.

Side note:  I made a cheeseless version of this for the Husband by using a mix of hummus and mustard.  He liked it!

Step 5:  EAT!  Bask in your sandwich glory.

Amazing.

With 1/2 a sweet potato and kidney beans:

Honestly, that George Foreman was probably the best $40 we ever spent in the kitchen.

I feel like it’s a crime that I don’t own a George Foreman. I may need to remedy that!

  • Amanda @ Eat to Live, Live to Run October 18, 2010, 12:39 pm

I rarely use my George Foreman. I love a good grilled sandwhich every now and then though. Hmmm … I’ll have to think of some good fall ingredients.

  • Debbie October 18, 2010, 12:42 pm

I love my George Foreman grill. I also like to grill my burritos. Takes it to a whole other level and I have the type where the plates can go in the dishwasher so clean up is a breeze.

  • Estela @ Weekly Bite October 18, 2010, 12:43 pm

I love George Foreman! I had one in college and used it so much it eventually broke. We just bought another one 🙂

  • Kiranda from Mommyhood October 18, 2010, 12:43 pm

OMG. I LOVELOVELOVE my george foreman. We grill chicken and fish on there and even have made our steaks with it…[we don’t have a real grill yet]…it’s awesome.

  • chelsey @ clean eating chelsey October 18, 2010, 12:45 pm

I <3 sandiwches too! I don't have a george foreman but wanted a panini the other night – enter in my waffle maker! It actually worked out really well!

  • Kelly October 18, 2010, 12:46 pm

    Looks amazing! Love George!

  • Kristina @ spabettie October 18, 2010, 12:46 pm

I love grilled sandwiches… and like you, I love sandwiches in general… Mmm, fresh bread, crisp crunchy lettuce… I use hummus as a sandwich spread all the time – YUM !

  • Amanda (Eating Up) October 18, 2010, 12:48 pm

I love George! I’m about to make myself a smoked salmon and goat cheese grilled sandwich right now. I’m already drooling just thinking about it.

  • Heather @ Side of Sneakers October 18, 2010, 12:48 pm

I inherited a George Foreman when I got married and it’s the best thing ever. Why do grilled cheese sandwiches taste so much better when they’re squished in a grill?!

  • Jessica @ Dairy Free Betty October 18, 2010, 12:48 pm

    haha…I too love the GF… we actually have 3… don’t ask!! 🙂

This sandwhich sounds great, awesome for school!! Thanks for sharing!

  • Megan @ Healthy Hoggin October 18, 2010, 12:51 pm

I miss my George Foreman!! I haven’t used one since college! 😉

Your grilled sandwich looks delicious! Feta + grilled veggies are one of my favorite combos, too!

  • Samantha Angela @ Bikini Birthday October 18, 2010, 12:51 pm

I have a George Foreman grill.

It’s in a box somewhere in my house.

    Never used it.

  • Brittany (A Healthy Slice of Life) October 18, 2010, 12:53 pm

I love grilled sandwiches!! Too bad my panini grill press/Georgia Forman wannabe is so hard to clean!

  • Gabriela @ Une Vie Saine October 18, 2010, 12:53 pm

I still need a George Foreman…though I have nowhere to store one!! Haha I feel like I’d be making paninis every day though 🙂

  • Ella October 18, 2010, 12:55 pm

My roomie totally brought a George Forman for our kitchen this year, we haven’t used it once. I just thought it was for chicken and meat, I didn’t even think to grill veggies!

  • Allison October 18, 2010, 12:57 pm

I LOVE my George, but I use it mostly to grill turkey burgers. I’ll have to try veggies, too! But how do you clean it? I find it to be SUCH a pain after grilling up a burger!

    • Caitlin October 18, 2010, 8:55 pm

I just let it cool and wipe it down with a wet cloth.

  • tina October 18, 2010, 12:57 pm

oh george- i haven’t had one since college!

now i usually just put a heavy pan on top of my sammie on a grill pan! 🙂

  • Megan (Braise The Roof) October 18, 2010, 1:02 pm

I had a Foreman in college and used it all the time- I should have held onto it! I mean, I HAVE a big kid grill now, but it doesn’t compare when you’re making a panini! 🙂

  • Sarah @ The Smart Kitchen October 18, 2010, 1:04 pm

I have lived with roommates who’ve owned George Foremans for YEARS and I have NEVER used it. Perhaps this will be the inspiration I need. 🙂

  • Amy October 18, 2010, 1:04 pm

My husband has taken over the George Foreman to cook hot dogs on it – I’ve never tried stealing it away for a sandwich. But this might give me the incentive I need … 🙂

  • Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat October 18, 2010, 1:07 pm

I 100% agree, grilled sandwiches are SO much better than regular! I purchased a sandwich press a few months ago and I don’t think I’ve eaten a non-grilled one since!

  • Charlie October 18, 2010, 1:08 pm

I love grilled sandwiches but haven’t found a panini grill that’s less than 80$ (80$ to make sandwiches?). So I use a skillet and spatula ;).

  • Tracey @ I'm Not Superhuman October 18, 2010, 1:10 pm

I think grilling makes any sandwich better. I love my veggie sandwiches grilled–the cheese is all gooey and the veggies nice and warm.

  • MaryBe October 18, 2010, 1:11 pm

I haven’t used George since I stopped eating cheese…Thanks for letting us know how you made your husband’s sandwich! Time to break it out

  • Holly @ couchpotatoathlete October 18, 2010, 1:12 pm

I loved our George Foreman — for some reason I decided to get rid of it (we hadn’t used it in months) — maybe I should buy a new one 🙂

  • Liz @ Tip Top Shape October 18, 2010, 1:15 pm

Oohh, I LOVE grilling my sandwiches. Definitely kicks a simple sandwich up a notch.

  • Shanna, like Banana October 18, 2010, 1:16 pm

Excellent tips…I don’t ahve a GF, but am thinking of getting one because I LOVE the taste of grilled foods =)

  • Julie October 18, 2010, 1:20 pm

always use my foreman for pressed/panini type sandwiches. One of my favorites is just tomato and goat cheese. Yum!

  • Sarena (The Non Dairy Queen) October 18, 2010, 1:21 pm

SSHH don’t tell my husband, but I have a secret love affair with George. I used to be a snob to him, but then I discovered all the great things he can do! Love him!

  • Amanda October 18, 2010, 1:23 pm

I do like the George Forman, but honestly it’s a pain in the butt to clean. I have found that I can do everything that is does on the stove with a frying pan.

  • Marina October 18, 2010, 1:23 pm

Grilled sandwiches are so awesome, specially with bunch of melted cheese!

  • Anna @ Newlywed, Newly Veg October 18, 2010, 1:38 pm

I should bust out my GF– I’m pretty sure it’s down in the basement. I don’t think I’ve used it since my freshman year of college!

  • Becca October 18, 2010, 1:44 pm

Delish! Hubby made me sell the GF because I barely used it and our kitchen is tiny, but I am allowed a panini maker for Christmas. I’ve rediscovered the joys of bread (particularly Burgen Soya and Linseed) in recent months, so I’d definitely enjoy it!

  • lisasfoods October 18, 2010, 1:45 pm

I like using the broiler for sandwiches, but my sister and parents use their George Foreman grills. Not sure that I’d use one that often.

  • Kelsi October 18, 2010, 1:45 pm

What is it about toasting a sandwhich that takes it from decent to bangin’? Those veggies look so yummy in there.

  • Cyndi @ Weightless Life October 18, 2010, 1:46 pm

I love my George Foreman. The sandwich combinations are endless.

  • Sarah for Real October 18, 2010, 1:53 pm

I luuuuv grilled sandwiches. That looks delicious! Can’t you do the foreman without butter/oil also? Since it’s non-stick?

    • Rachel October 18, 2010, 1:54 pm

I never use butter/oil on my George and never have problems.

      • Caitlin October 18, 2010, 8:53 pm

I use it mostly for flavor 🙂

  • Rachel October 18, 2010, 1:54 pm

I LOVE my George Foreman. It is definitely the most used item in my kitchen when I keep it out on the counter. When I put it away I tend to forget about it. Whoopsie!

  • Tabatha October 18, 2010, 2:10 pm

The best money I ever spent in the kitchen was a NuWave Oven. Yes, it is a WONDER to those of us who don’t do a whole lot of “cooking” and want to K.I.S.S. I take my food right from the freezer (broccoli, fish, etc) and put it in there, food is perfect in 10-20 minutes. I have no idea how I lived without this and my microwave! 🙂

    • Caitlin October 18, 2010, 8:53 pm

      i saw those infomericals!

  • Maren October 18, 2010, 2:11 pm

I can honestly say that grilling sandwiches is the only thing my George Foreman does in my house.

  • Jessica@tastyandtrim October 18, 2010, 2:36 pm

I love my George Foreman! My family and I seriously use it ALL the time to make everything from paninis and quesadillas to grilled chicken and turkey burgers. Your grilled sandwich looks delicious!

  • Allie October 18, 2010, 2:38 pm

George does rule 🙂 all of your pictures look delicious!

  • katie October 18, 2010, 2:42 pm

these look yummy. at my work they have a panini machine and they are soo yummy. i just try to not eat them all the time because i know they make them with butter and full fat cheese.

  • Stacey (The Habit of Healthy) October 18, 2010, 2:58 pm

I love grilled sandwiches but unfortunately don’t have anything to grill them on!

  • carlee October 18, 2010, 3:05 pm

I’m totally with you! I use my panini press at least 3 times a week!
    Im a huge sandwich an!!

  • Stacey October 18, 2010, 3:08 pm

sigh…i miss my george foreman! It was destroyed during a nasty breakup with an ex-boyfriend..BOO. Your lunch looks delicious!! Kidney beans on a sweet tater? Sounds like out-of-the-box thinking 😀 I like that!

  • Amber K October 18, 2010, 3:22 pm

    That looks amazing!

  • Michelle (The Runner's Plate) October 18, 2010, 3:41 pm

I eat a lot of sandwiches as well and sometimes it’s nice to change things up a bit. My husband and I use our panini press a lot!

  • tracy October 18, 2010, 3:44 pm

What a great idea! George Foreman!! I have to get mine out and dust it off!!

  • Rachel October 18, 2010, 4:03 pm

I love my George Foreman! I use it for grilling onions multiple times a week, mmm!

  • Lexi October 18, 2010, 4:06 pm

    WOW this looks delicious!

  • Food & Other Things October 18, 2010, 4:46 pm

Your sandwich looks so good…I need to try grilling a sandwhich on my george forman sometime!

  • Jamie @ Food in Real Life October 18, 2010, 4:48 pm

My college George Foreman was fumigated and sent to the dump, but maybe I’ll get a new one. I envision brie and apple sandwiches! Oh and $40 is so much cheaper than those fancy panini press machines!

  • Exercise and Eat October 18, 2010, 4:49 pm

I’d never have thought my GF would be good for this! Thanks for sharing:)

  • Mary (A Merry Life) October 18, 2010, 4:51 pm

Love this. Sandwiches do get boring which is why I love using the George of panini press to make them more fun. 😉

  • Hope October 18, 2010, 4:58 pm

Yummo! I love grilling my sandwiches!! Everything takes on such an awesome flavour when its grilled mmmmm

  • Annie@stronghealthyfit October 18, 2010, 5:03 pm

Thanks for the encouraging reply to my comment- I really appreciated it. Your sandwich looks amazing 🙂

  • Mimi October 18, 2010, 5:19 pm

I love grilled sandwiches, but never made one by myself. I am so eager to try.

  • Katy October 18, 2010, 5:39 pm

It’s so funny that you posted this today because I started breaking out my little George Foreman over the weekend. I LOVE IT!!!

And today I made a tasty grilled cheese on it. Yum! 🙂

  • Ellen@FirednFabulous October 18, 2010, 5:49 pm

I agree—George Foreman DOES rule. I need to get my bf one. I try to help him with eating healthy and balanced and I think this would really help. He’d still be eating things he likes (ie sandwiches), but it would help cut out the burgers and pizza! 🙂

    • Caitlin October 18, 2010, 8:52 pm

I definitely think a GF would help a man!

  • Lisa (bakebikeblog) October 18, 2010, 6:42 pm

Oh how I miss my George Foreman!! He is currenly packed away in a box somewhere – waiting to be unpacked when we move into our new place! I just might have to make a grilled cheese toastie to celebrate when he makes an appearance again!

  • Cynthia (It All Changes) October 18, 2010, 6:47 pm

George is my favorite appliance. We got the one with interchangeable plates for a wedding present so it is also a griddle and waffle maker 🙂

  • Angie (My Life in Bites) October 18, 2010, 6:55 pm

I’m 27 and I think I use my Foreman more now than ever. It’s the perfect way to make something ordinary extraordinary and it’s so easy to clean!

Have you ever grilled bananas on it? Or peaches? It’s delicious

  • Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin October 18, 2010, 8:00 pm

I haven’t used my sandwich press in ages! But I’m definitely craving a grilled sandwich now – especially with lots of melty cheese!

  • Jessica (Fit and Clean) October 18, 2010, 8:00 pm

That is such a great idea! I have 2 Foreman Grills, a family size and a little one. I don’t know why I never thought to grill my veggies on it. I saw his house in St. Lucia…up on a hill, a mansion! Beautiful!!

  • Wei-Wei October 18, 2010, 8:10 pm

Damn. I want a George Foreman soo bad 🙁

  • maria @ Chasing the Now October 18, 2010, 8:25 pm

I need to buy a george foreman! 🙂

  • Caitlin October 18, 2010, 8:40 pm

Right?! So versatile. In college, my roommate also had the Cuisine Art panini press / griddle. Oh my gosh. Best invention ever. All we did for a year was press and grill stuff. No other kitchen tools necessary.

  • M October 18, 2010, 8:47 pm

Yeah I never use oil or butter on my Foreman.
I haven’t used the Foreman this year because I am beginning to question how healthy it is to use(non stick type surfaces are meant to leech off cancerous stuff to the food….not good!)
    Any thoughts on this Caitlin?

    • Caitlin October 18, 2010, 8:51 pm

I guess I really just don’t worry about that kind of stuff that much. How bad can it be to use it occasionally? I don’t break the surface with metal utensils though.

  • maya @ finding balance in tokyo October 19, 2010, 1:07 am

I really need to get some kind of a stove-top panini press. I don’t have the counter space in my tiny Japanese kitchen for a dedicated appliance like a George Foreman.. but I really want to make hot pressed sandwiches like that!

  • Lacey @ Lake Life October 19, 2010, 4:43 pm

I use my mini GF grill to press sandwiches too! I received a panini press a couple years ago as a gift and have never even taken it out of the box- what’s the point when you have George? 🙂

  • Alyson October 19, 2010, 9:28 pm

I am so happy to hear that you love GF as well! For all you Canadians (especially students like moi!) out there I picked up a baby sized one perfect for wraps/sandwiches and grilled veggies at Wal Mart for $15 dollars!! 🙂

  • Katie October 23, 2010, 8:46 am

YUM! I always whip at the George Foreman to press/grill my sandwiches…they just taste better that way!!!
