Have I mentioned before that I am very particular about flying?

IMG_5475

  • I am seriously terrified of airplanes.  As a result, I’ve become very superstitious about my actions as I board.  I kiss my hand and then touch it to the side of the plane before boarding.  I’ve been doing this for more than eight years.
  • I must sit on the aisle.  I absolutely hate the window and the center seat.  I drink way too much water to be happy trapped in between two strangers.
  • I read the entire Sky Mall catalogue every time I fly.  Even though they’ve had the same products for a decade.

Airplane food:

I had grand plans for finding a healthy meal, but I ended up being late to my gate and was squished for time.  This ended up being a decent compromise.

From the Chinese buffet, I got two veggie spring rolls:

A ton of green beans:

And fresh fruit.

On the plane, I snacked on crackers while chugging along with some writing.

The Husband picked me up from the airport, and I was positively THRILLED to see his smiling face (and the doggies – he always brings them with me to greet me at the airport!).  I sure missed my little family.  The Husband had his last day of graduate school today, and on Thursday, he is taking his final board exam.  He’s been working really hard!

We have plans tonight to catch up on all the TV shows I missed while in California, and I’m going to try to rummage up a healthy snack before bed – maybe egg on toast or a PB banana?  I could sure use some protein in my life!

Goodnight, my friends!

I am not a good flyer. I really despise it. I don’t have anything specific I do like you, but I cry a little on the inside. 🙂 Oh, and your lunch looks sooooo yummy!

  • runnerforever May 25, 2010, 9:17 pm

I read an article a while ago that said a huge percent of the population is really scared of flying so you definitely are not alone!

  • Camille May 25, 2010, 9:23 pm

I am terrified of flying too 🙁
Glad to hear you made it home!

  • Jessica @ How Sweet It Is May 25, 2010, 9:32 pm

I hate flying, too. Glad you’re home safe!

  • Jenn (Jenn's Menu and Lifestyle Blog) May 25, 2010, 9:35 pm

Glad your Care Bear mobile landed safely and you’re back home with your loved ones!! 🙂

I get sick when I fly, but I’m not really afraid of flying at all.

  • Mary @ What's Cookin' with Mary May 25, 2010, 9:41 pm

    mmmmm egg on toooooast 😉

Glad you made it home safe! What a trip.

  • emptynutjar May 25, 2010, 9:41 pm

You plan a better snack than I Caitlin..you’re so amazing.
I wish some day I could meet u, seriously.

Eat up and sleep in if you can.

  • eatmovelove May 25, 2010, 9:44 pm

I vote for both options! I hate the window seat – well, I like it if it’s only 2 seats…but if there’s 3 seats and it’s crowded – I sooo want the aisle…mainly because I have to pee so much and I just get claustophobic or something!

  • Janna May 25, 2010, 9:44 pm

I’m a nervous flyer and have flying rituals too! I always have to wear my same “plane outfit” every time I fly 🙂 And I have to sit in the window seat!

  • Lindsay @ Summit Sandwiches May 25, 2010, 9:44 pm

Whenever there’s turbulence during my flights, I have this terrible habit of making “deals” with God. For example, there’s the: “Hey God, I’ll go to church next Sunday if you’ll let me live and keep the plane aloft in the air like it’s supposed to!” deal.

Lol…no. I don’t really do that, but it’s tempting sometimes. I tend to pray a lot though…argh. I hate flying. Something about it just gets me queasy.

    • Chandra H May 25, 2010, 9:50 pm

OMG i do this ALL THE TIME, like, not just an airplanes, “if this happens then i swear i’ll never do this again!” blah blah. or sometimes i get really superstitious to the point where it’s like, “if the light turns red in 10 seconds it means that so and so will happen,” lolol

    • caitlin May 26, 2010, 9:00 am

      hahah i do this too.

  • Erin May 25, 2010, 9:45 pm

I have to have an aisle seat, too. It’s easier to get up and walk around, stretch your legs and PEE! Glued to Biggest Loser right now and then watching Glee in the morning. Tuesday is the best night of TV. 😀

  • Wei-Wei May 25, 2010, 9:45 pm

Glad you had a safe flight! I love how the Husband brings the dogs with him. 😀

I’m not really scared of flying, at all. I just highly dislike airplane smells… that scarily sterile, smell that makes me nauseous. Ugh.

  • maria @ Chasing the Now May 25, 2010, 9:47 pm

I hate flying too, mostly because I am terrified of heights. However, living in a foreign country might help me adjust whether I want to or not!

  • Chandra H May 25, 2010, 9:47 pm

i like the pictures of your chinese food! lol 😀 ugh, i am pretty similar w/ flying too. if i start thinking about the situation [being up 30,000 feet] i can really start to panic! i remember reading somewhere though that statistically you are more likely to be in a car crash than a plane crash, and that’s comforting to me, i’m comforted by numbers.

yay for being back with your dear husband and pups 🙂 have a lovely evening!

  • BethT May 25, 2010, 9:49 pm

My hub and I always bring our dog to the airport to greet one another. It’s the best ending of any trip.

  • Therese Dansby May 25, 2010, 9:52 pm

I rarely laugh out loud at the computer screen, but I love how you said, “I drink way too much water to be happy trapped in between two strangers.” I definitely empathize!

  • Jessica @ The Process of Healing May 25, 2010, 9:53 pm

Glad you made it home safe and sound!

  • Heather (runningwithsass.com) May 25, 2010, 9:58 pm

I HATE airplanes. I avoid them at all costs. Way too many control issues!

  • Sarah May 25, 2010, 10:02 pm

I’m going to try to be as politically correct as possible in this comment, but I once flew from Dallas / Fort Worth to Atlanta and I was in the middle seat between two large guys that actually both had to put up their arm rests in order to sit comfortably.

Needless to say, it was an uncomfortable flight. I try not to pass judgment, but if I paid the same amount of money for my seat, why do I have to lose some of mine because someone else needs the armrest up? Airplane seats are already so small. Sometimes I wonder how anyone is comfortable. I barely fit and I’m a fairly small person.

Anyway, welcome back to the east coast! I’d love to hear some reflections on the century now that the adrenaline has worn off and you can think clearly. Would you do it again?

    • caitlin May 26, 2010, 9:00 am

your wish is my command! i wrote about it this morning.

  • Lisa @ bakebikeblog May 25, 2010, 10:04 pm

There really is nothing better than being greeted by your loved ones at the airport 🙂
Speaking of airports – I am at one now!!!

  • Heather (Heather's Dish) May 25, 2010, 10:13 pm

so glad you made it home safely! i hate sitting in the middle and window seat too…i feel so crowded and i chug the water too 🙂

  • Krystina May 25, 2010, 10:19 pm

I got over my fear of flying going to Orlando last week and now I like it!

  • Natalie @ Keep It Sassy May 25, 2010, 10:23 pm

I’m a nervous flyer too. Take-off is always entertaining for my seatmates…I always curl up and close my eyes until I’m sure we’re safely in the air. I’ve done that since I was little! Luckily it doesn’t look too strange since I always travel with a blanket so I can try try TRY to sleep on the plane.

  • Stacey May 25, 2010, 10:30 pm

Hahaha, I do the SAME THING! But even CRAZIER! I cross my fingers on both hands, kiss the crossed fingers, touch them to the sides of the plane, and step on the plane with my right foot. WHAAAAT.

I got the kiss/touch thing from my mom (I didn’t even know this was a thing other people did?!), but I have no idea why I added the other stuff. If I’m traveling with someone, I have to cross fingers and hold their hand on take off/landing, too. If I’m by myself I hold my own hands, hahaha.

    • caitlin May 26, 2010, 9:02 am

glad to know i’m not the only weirdo!

  • Michelle @ Give Me the Almond Butter May 25, 2010, 10:54 pm

My brother always taps the side of the plane too. I preference the window seat if its a short ride, but if its long I always ask for the aisle cause I also always have to use the bathroom.

  • Tammy @ Defining Wellness May 25, 2010, 10:58 pm

Welcome home and best wishes to your husband!!

  • Sarah for Real May 25, 2010, 11:01 pm

I freaking LOVE green beans from Chinese restaurants. So salty and delicious!

Glad you made it home nice and easy. That’s a loooong way to travel.

  • Cynthia (It All Changes) May 25, 2010, 11:12 pm

I’ve been flying so long I forget some people have fears.

  • Amber K @ sparkpeople May 26, 2010, 12:26 am

I have never been afraid of flying. I don’t really know why. I am entirely too trusting of the airplane’s ability to just function the way it should!

  • John May 26, 2010, 1:14 am

Glad you made it back safe. I never worried about flying as there’s not much you can do. It will either get you there or won’t and there’s not much point in worrying about it. IMHO though as I fully understand it’s not so easy for others.

  • Freya @ Brit Chick Runs May 26, 2010, 1:25 am

A chinese buffet on the plane!? Crikey, what airline were you flying with!? I’ve never heard of anything so cool on a plane!

  • Annie@stronghealthyfit May 26, 2010, 3:26 am

Caitlin, I never would have guessed you were afraid of flying! You seem to travel so much and be fine with it. I developed a fear of flying sometime in the past few years when I hadn’t flown anywhere in awhile. I flew to Europe yesterday and feel like it was such an accomplishment! I know you usually go au natural in the medicine dept., but I used some Klonopin (an anti-anxiety med.) to help my nerves and I definitely recommend it. I only used it because I thought I might have a full-on anxiety attack.

  • Helen May 26, 2010, 3:37 am

I don’t have any superstitions about flying…..wel I do like to be by the window so I can see the world go buy. I have a phobia of flying over water, I have such a fear of crashing into water even though I heard it’s better than crashing over land (I bet this is not helping you!) Loving the food you chose for your flight, you are so good at choosing healthy options.

  • Nicole @ Geek Turned Athlete May 26, 2010, 4:33 am

I have to sit in the aisle seat too! I just get claustrophobic sitting in the middle seat. Thank goodness my husband can sleep anywhere and is perfectly happy taking the middle seat for me! I’m glad you are back home! I’ll be sending good vibes your way for your hubby’s board exam!!!

  • Emily Eats and Exercises May 26, 2010, 5:26 am

Ugg, I hate flying. When possible I always try to sit by the window so I can rest my head and sleep through as much of the flight as possible!
    Glad you’re home safe.

  • Tina May 26, 2010, 7:29 am

Oh I would never think of having to have the aisle seat for easy bathroom breaks. I do always sit on the end of booths or the aisle at church for that very reason.

  • Diana (Mymarblerye) May 26, 2010, 7:47 am

I’m sad you were in Texas and I didn’t get to see you..come back during your book tour k?

  • Tracey @ I'm Not Superhuman May 26, 2010, 8:19 am

Glad you made it home safe. I’m the total opposite. I love flying and always want the window seat so I can look out the window during takeoff and landing.

To eat his own. I’ll go skydiving but I’m petrified of bugs to the point of hysteria.

  • Kelly @ Healthy Living With Kelly May 26, 2010, 8:24 am

Glad you made it home safe!

  • Caitlin in MD May 26, 2010, 8:46 am

I, too, am a TERRIBLE flyer. Every time I have a plane trip, I have anxiety about it for days and then terrible panic attacks in the air. My doctor even used to give me a prescription for a couple Ativan pills to take while flying. I don’t know if I have any “rituals,” per se, but I do always wear a hooded sweatshirt when I fly (so I can put the hood up and try to relax) and listen to my iPod really loudly. Also…I HAVE to have the window seat. Something about being able to see land (and make sure we are right side up?!) makes me feel more comfortable.

  • katie May 26, 2010, 8:49 am

I do the kissing the airplane thing too every time i fly (for the last 10 years or so also!) I try to do it sneakily cuz I feel silly, but I simply HAVE to do it!

  • Kim May 26, 2010, 9:09 am

I’m with ya on the flying. I absolutely hate it. Before I fly, I usually like to take something to ‘calm’ my nerves, I like to have a sprite or water to sip on while waiting to take off and must have the center aisle seat if at all possible. Once we are up in the air and flying smoothly I tend to relax a little, or maybe that’s the nerve pill kicking in. Here’s to flying in the future!!!

  • laura May 26, 2010, 9:23 am

i ALWAYS touch the side of the plane as i board, i thought i was the only one who did that! and once i am on board, i always get a tomato juice..its the only time i ever drink tomato juice, but for some reason its my drink of choice on the plane 🙂

  • Kati May 26, 2010, 11:03 am

I used to always worry about what I was going to eat when I would be traveling. I definitely agree that the key is just planning and being mindful. I make sure I eat a balanced meal before I go, bring along healthy snacks to eat every few hours and stay hydrated. Navigating healthy food at the airport is difficult so I typically go to a sandwich shop where I see them make it in front of me and I know exactly what is going into my food.

  • Sarah May 26, 2010, 11:53 am

I totally do the kiss my hand and then touch the plane before I get on. I’ve never got on a plane without doing this. It’s nice to know there’s someone like me out there 🙂

  • Julia May 26, 2010, 5:28 pm

haha, I read all the in-flight magazines as well. even when I have layovers and they have the same exact magazine in the seats, I will re-read them.

  • Sammi May 27, 2010, 10:44 am

I love the sky mall catalog 🙂 haha. They have a lot of really good (and by good, I mean weird) products for dog owners!
I’m not scared of flying at all; however, I do get airsick. The only thing that works for me is wrist bands for motion sickness. When I was younger, my mom made us take Dramamine but I would still get sick every time. The wrist bands are the only product that’s ever worked for me.
I don’t do this anymore, but I used to read the emergency pamphlet every time 🙂 haha
