73.0 miles in 5:37.  Close enough to 75.0 miles for me – I’m done!

Untitled

I feel like I spent the entire day on the bike.  I’m not saying that running a marathon is easy (because 26.2 miles on foot is never easy), but I swear that cycling long distances is the hardest physical thing I’ve ever done.  I bet other people think that cycling is easier – it’s funny how all of our bodies approach activities differently!

I’ll do a recap of my ride tonight at dinner… Until then, I need to refuel.

  • Laura April 27, 2010, 5:35 pm

  • eatingRD April 27, 2010, 5:49 pm

Yowza, you rock! And the best part . . . FOOD!!!! love that feeling! Most of my rides are powered by the thought of what I’m going to make and eat when I get back ha! The longest so far for me is 50 miles, and I need to adjust my new bike a bit more b/c my shoulders were saying ouch on the last one. Hoping for 65 mi this weekend 🙂

  • ~Jessica~ April 27, 2010, 6:02 pm

I *definitely* don’t think that cycling is easier than running. Words can’t express how proud I am of you and how proud you should be of yourself.

Three words for you: simply. the. best. (and if you want another five, how about ‘better than all the rest!’)

  • Lisa (bakebikeblog) April 27, 2010, 6:04 pm

Great work girl 🙂 Awesome effort!

  • Mary @ What's Cookin' with Mary April 27, 2010, 6:05 pm

Great job Caitlin !! 😀 Can’t wait to read the recap.

  • kristinp April 27, 2010, 6:06 pm

Nice job! And yes, for some of us cycling is a breeze compared to running 🙂 Last weekend I powered through 34 miles in less than two hours on my goofy 5-speed cruiser, took a shower and got on with my life until I did it again the next day. Today I tried to run a single 10 minute mile and F-A-I-L-E-D. Miserably, I might add. Isn’t it weird how different bodies can be?

    Congrats again!
    Kristin

  • Estela @ Weekly Bite April 27, 2010, 6:10 pm

Hahahaha. If there was ever a time to apply ice to that area, it would be now.

  • Rebecca @ How the Cookie's Crumble April 27, 2010, 6:28 pm

I haven’t done a looooooong bike ride since a summer in middle school when I rode my bike all the way across Wyoming on the Oregon trail over several days. THAT was a long ride. and I’ve never done a full marathon, but I have done a half and I think biking might be easier. Guess I’ll have give it a try again as an adult! 🙂

  • Anna @ Doing Good & Living Well April 27, 2010, 6:28 pm

  • Carolina John April 27, 2010, 9:21 pm

babe…. BABE….. I just posted the race report last night for my century ride on saturday. WAY harder than either marathon or the half ironman I’ve done. way way harder. yes. can’t wait to see your ride recap, i’m sure we will agree on too many points.

    • HTP Dad April 28, 2010, 5:14 am

Glad you finished, John – my first century was a”learning” experience too – train more, eat more, drink more and don’t try to draft people in the rain unless you a: like the taste of dirty road water or b: are just so tired you don’t care. Really – do this a few times this summer and at the end you’ll knock out a hundred miler for fun. And then there’s double and triple centuries – within 24 hours.

  • Diana @ frontyardfoodie April 27, 2010, 9:33 pm

Holy mother. That’s a LONG ride. Way to work it. Sheesh!

  • Wei-Wei April 27, 2010, 9:52 pm

holy f** %^&^&$&%$ &*^*^*^* Did I mention I curse like a sailor? that’s probably the amount of cardio I need for the massive amount of chocolate I’ve been consuming. Great job!

  • Lara (Thinspired) April 27, 2010, 10:05 pm

You continue to amaze me! EPIC! 😉

  • Amber K @ sparkpeople April 27, 2010, 10:08 pm

Ok, so question for you and those who do things like this. What runs through your mind during FIVE HOURS on a bike? I can’t imagine doing something like that and I’m so curious!

    • Caitlin April 27, 2010, 10:15 pm

      i try to zone out!

  • HTP Dad April 28, 2010, 5:07 am

GAAAK! No wonder you were bored to death and it seemed like it took forever! No scenery, no one to talk to, and doing laps of the same route! Long distances are much more fun with company, in interesting places and needing to pay attention to where you’re going- navigating. Granted, sometimes the company devolves to singing old sitcom theme shows, the scenery involves an overwhelming smell of orange blossoms and “navigating” means ten extra miles while you’re lost, but it can also be interesting conversations about geology, truly beautiful views and the joy of NOT getting lost for even 100 yards! Laps – yuck – all the work, none of the fun.

  • Dominique April 28, 2010, 6:07 pm

Congrats on the 73 miles–that’s quite an accomplishment! I couldn’t imagine riding even 1/4 of that. You’re such a superstar!!
