The Lotto Game

in All Posts

I was up early to drive my friend Harry to the airport.  His sister just had a baby girl (named Addison)!  Super exciting.

I made us bowls of oatmeal before we left:

My oatmeal contained:

  • 1/2 cup oatmeal
  • 1/2 cup almond milk
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 sliced banana
  • Toppings: Grape Nuts, cinnamon, strawberries

Perfection.

Push Up Challenge

This is your friendly reminder to do your push ups if you’re joining the push up challenge with me! I did 2 sets of 10 this morning.   It’s hard but it’s getting a little easier.

The Lotto Game

Since I don’t have much to say this morning, I thought we could play my FAVORITE GAME.  The Lotto Game – as in, what would you do if you won a lump sum payout of $100 million?

I would:

  • Invest it wisely so we could live off interest.
  • Buy a house in Napa Valley, California and a flat in London.
  • Buy a really sweet hybrid SUV.
  • Travel the world and do amazing races.
  • Give money to my parents and in-laws.
  • Take our friends on an awesome Caribbean cruise.
  • Adopt another dachshund and a German shepherd.
  • Hire a personal chef, personal trainer, dog trainer, and a maid.
  • Get daily massages.
  • Donate money to a local charity and leave waitresses really big tips.
  • Keep blogging!

What would you do if you won the lottery?

I love the bit about leaving waitresses really big tips! 🙂 I’d definitely buy a house, take a huge trip around the world with my husband, and then set up big fat trust funds for my future children and nieces/nephews.

  • Freya @ Brit Chick Runs April 15, 2010, 9:05 am

    Grape nuts + oatmeal = bliss 🙂
Oh my gosh, that is a tough question!
Invest it, and live off the interest 😀
Buy a house for me, my family etc etc
    Give to charity
    Travel the world
Go and do postgrad study in the US, minus the debts
Um….go on a BIG shopping spree!! Wholefoods, Trader Joe’s, Waitrose, Topshop, all the designers…it’d be amazing 😀
    Hehe, I love this game!

  • Jessica @ How Sweet April 15, 2010, 9:06 am

Oh goodness! We would invest, save for kids’ college, move later when we needed more space, and buy a home in Northern Michigan.

  • Freya @ Brit Chick Runs April 15, 2010, 9:06 am

Oh yeah – I’d definetly keep blogging too! But the standard of my food would be off the scale 😛

  • Gracie (complicated day) April 15, 2010, 9:06 am

I would send all the rest of my brothers (I have seven!) to college. I worked my way through school and it was arduous. I’d love to be able to help them avoid the struggle!

    • caitlin April 15, 2010, 9:07 am

aww super sweet! i love it

(Ps 7 brothers?!?!?! are you the only girl?)

  • Nicole @ Geek Turned Athlete April 15, 2010, 9:07 am

    keep blogging
    travel a lot more!
give a lot to my fam!

you are a saint for driving everyone around! I had that task this past week, and I’m so done with driving for a while!

  • Marlene April 15, 2010, 9:10 am

I would build a state of the art Arts Centre. It would have a media/visual arts wing, a couple of bitching performance spaces (black box and maybe a traditional theatre), lots of rehearsal halls, and a loom for weaving and space for textile arts. There would also be a great hallway of rooms for artists studios and residencies.

Its programming would be split down the middle: half would be professionally mounted shows and exhibits, and the other half would be community programming and workshops.

Sigh… as you can tell, I could day-dream about this ALL DAY long… Such a fun game!!

  • Carolyn @ lovinlosing April 15, 2010, 9:12 am

First I’d make sure we couldn’t spend it too fast so I’d seek advice and invest a chunk of it. Then I’d pay off my bills and my immediate family’s bills. Next, I’d buy a house in the mountains PLUS one in a tropical place. My husband would buy LOTS of nice cars. 🙂 I’d also have some sort of animal rescue.

  • Jenny April 15, 2010, 9:14 am

Travel the world and be free to return as I please and work a job that makes me truly happy. Live by the ocean and sail on the weekends. Donate to good causes, like WWF and March of Dimes. Help out people in need and take care of my family.

  • Marisa (Loser for Life) April 15, 2010, 9:15 am

I would save lots of it, have my husband quit his job, fix up my house and pay off all our family members’ homes! And probably find a good charity to give some too, also. It would be so fun! Like being “Santa”!!

  • Diana (Mymarblerye) April 15, 2010, 9:18 am

so cheesy but this is what I would do:
    1) give 30% to my parents
    2) buy a condo in NyC (play Jayz and alicia song NOW plz)
    3) Open up a “decorate your own cupcake” coffee shop

  • Sam @ Snowflakes and Sunshine April 15, 2010, 9:19 am

    I’d move to the USA!

  • Miranda @ www.mirandasjeans.blogspot.com April 15, 2010, 9:20 am

Wow, that’s a lot of money. I would:
~ invest and live off the interest too.
~ buy a cottage in cottage country, Ontario.
~ buy a boat for said cottage.
~ buy a new, but old style looking vespa.
    ~ travel around Europe.
~ pay off all debt including our measly 170,000$ mortage.
~ help parents pay off their debt too.
~ quit my job and go back to school.
~ donate to local not for profit agency.

Yeah it’s nice to dream. Ill never win the lottery because my husband and I don’t play. LOL

haha, I love it, can I come to your farm-warming party?! 🙂

      • Neely April 15, 2010, 10:20 am

Yes indeed… also, as I think about it, I am sure plenty of my friends would appreciate it if I had enough money to hire Robert Pattinson to stand scantily clothed to stage left.

        • caitlin April 15, 2010, 12:54 pm

i want to go to this party!

  • Hedda April 15, 2010, 9:25 am

First of all I would freak out! MOney stresses me, especially when there is a lot of them :p
When I had calmed down I would probably :
Invest/ save a lot of it.
    Pay my student loan.
Pay for a trip to Italy for my parents because they have helped me so much and loves Italy.
Create a found where the money would be used to support different organisations.
Help my grandmother with cancer- medicins.

Buy myself a big chocolate and my dog a huge goodie to celebrate.
And then think more about what to do with such an amount of money.

  • lauren @ Eater not a runner April 15, 2010, 9:27 am

    1. Pay off the credit card (which is actually peanuts compared to a lotto win but still….)
    2. Donate to animal charities.
    3. Buy a flat in London, a house in North California and a house in Tasmania, Australia I could therefore get all the sun I need without getting homesick for England!
    4. Set up my yoga studio/vegan cafe ideas with branches in England and Australia.
    5. Travel and spread the yoga word and teach lots of free classes
    6. Buy a better bike!

Dream big, you never know 😀

  • kalli@fitandfortysomething April 15, 2010, 9:29 am

    get another rottie.
    help people especially my family.
ride my bike alot and all over the place 🙂

    2. Pay my parents back for my college education
    3. Put some away for grad school
    4. Donate a ridiculous amount to support local agriculture
    5. Donate a ridiculous amount to Africa Yoga Project, an organization started by a woman I became very close with last semester (google it- they do great stuff)
    6. Move back to Nairobi, buy a SWEET house, and foot the bill for my friends and family in the US to come and visit as much as possible.

  • Tracey @ I'm Not Superhuman April 15, 2010, 9:34 am

After picking myself up off the floor? Hm, I’d first go get the latest and greatest cartilage regenerating treatment in both knees. Then I’d cry out of happiness. I’d also:

    -invest
    -Donate
    -Buy a house
    -Or two
    -Travel on my new knees
-Probably make sure I didn’t win with the LOST numbers. If I did, I’d avoid all airplane travel.

    • Lauren (Health on the Run) April 15, 2010, 9:44 am

      hahahaha love this last one!!!

      • Ariel April 15, 2010, 11:55 am

I bet if the LOST numbers won, so many people would have to split the jackpot!

        • caitlin April 15, 2010, 12:55 pm

          hahah i love it.

  • Allie (Live Laugh Eat) April 15, 2010, 9:35 am

    Buy my parents a house
    Open a BAKERY!
Travel the world with my family
Buy my Daddy a much-needed car
    Donate to an orphanage
Put some of it in trust funds for my future children

  • Kathleen April 15, 2010, 9:39 am

Pay off everything, make sure my kids were set, and travel, travel, travel, travel, see the world!

  • Abri April 15, 2010, 9:41 am

Invest and Travel… probably buy a house and donate to some charities, but mainly I would travel. And blog about it. 🙂

  • Jocelyn April 15, 2010, 9:42 am

I would do all those things + hire a driver 😀

  • Erin (Travel, Eat, Repeat) April 15, 2010, 9:43 am

Keep traveling and writing, without worrying about paying the bills or getting a full-time job. Pay off my parents’ mortgage.

  • Lauren (Health on the Run) April 15, 2010, 9:52 am

I love this game (it’s so fun to dream!!)
First — quit my awful job!!!
    Then I’d:
    – Pay off my loans (college and car)
    – Travel around Europe
    – Buy/build a house in the CO mountains…maybe one on the Cape too
    – Start a huge animal sanctuary up in said mountains (think Best Friends in Utah…ok, maybe not quite as big but I secretly would love to run one someday)
    – Invest in programs to get kids moving and healthy (maybe by coming to work at my sanctuary ;))
    – Invest the rest so I could play with dogs, read, write, run, etc all day for the rest of my life!

  • Jolene (www.everydayfoodie.ca) April 15, 2010, 9:53 am

I was just thinking about this actually!! (Hoping) 🙂

    – Invest
    – Quit work
    – Travel the world
    – Keep blogging

  • Megan April 15, 2010, 10:01 am

By the way– love your Grape Nuts additions to mornings lately. I love these! Do you ever heat them up with soy or almond milk and then drizzle with honey? It is so yummy!

I really have a hard time even fathoming how much money that is. But I would probably:
    1. Quit current job
    2. Buy a flat in London
    3. Pay off my parents’ mortgage and their car debt
    4. Go to cooking school
    5. Travel extensively
    6. Buy an apartment overlooking Lake Michigan downtown Chicago
    7. Buy season theater tickets for Chicago, New York, and London (for a lifetime!)
    8. Get an iPhone (well, hopefully I can do this before I’m a lottery winner…)
    9. Race lots with tons of fancy shoes 🙂

    • Tara April 15, 2010, 10:14 am

Love the theater ticket idea! That;s totally the kind of thing I’d love to do, but never can justify the money spent.

    • caitlin April 15, 2010, 12:56 pm

      i love hot grape nuts!

  • Anna @ Newlywed, Newly Veg April 15, 2010, 10:02 am

I would totally adopt more dogs!!! And travel 🙂

    Love the name Addison!

  • Emma April 15, 2010, 10:02 am

I love your idea of traveling and doing cool races! I would so love that, when I was in Florence this winter I loved running on the streets and really getting to see the city. I think I would take my family to Italy, because that’s something we’ve always wanted to do, andI would buy a bakery for my mom to sell her amazing biscotti. I don’t know what else… definitely give some to charity and maybe put some aside for my siblings to go to college (after paying my own tuition, of course)

  • Morgan April 15, 2010, 10:02 am

-Pay off all of my loans, my husband’s loans and my brothers loans
-Pay off the rest of my parent’s mortgage
-Send my parents and in laws on a trip together (they get along great!)
-Build my dream home in Boston, buy an apartment in Manhattan and an apartment in Tel Aviv
    -Travel, travel, travel
-Donate to causes I care about
-Get a sister for my dog
    -Give my baby the world

  • Courtney April 15, 2010, 10:03 am

First I would invest, then I would immediately buy a new car. I would pay back my loans and give money to family members. And then I would pretty much do anything I wanted. Not sure if I would finish grad school though? I mean what’s the point if you never have to work again?

  • Robin April 15, 2010, 10:07 am

Ooo I love this game! I would:
    1. Give several millions to my church/missions/etc
    2. QUIT MY HELLACIOUS JOB
    3. Pay off my house/car/student loans
    4. Pay off my parents ILs,siblings, and a couple good friends’ loans (house, car, etc)
    5. Pay for my sister’s grad degree so she could go anywhere she wanted
    6. Randomly walk up to strangers and give them a hundred dollar bill (or more!! I’ve always wanted to do this!!)
    7. Start a scholarship for average kids – Those who try super hard, study a ton, and desperately want to go to college, but are only C/B students no matter how hard they try.
    7. Travel
    8. Start up my own scrapbook/stamp store.

  • Tara April 15, 2010, 10:11 am

    Oh man!!
First of all I have to say I watched your OWN segment last night and your voice is way different than I expected?! Not sure what I was expecting but it’s funny to *hear* your voice for the first time when I’m so used to *reading* your voice!

I also loved your post yesterday about career-path goal-setting. I think just about every college grad in their mid-20s right now is sort of like, “uhhh, what the heck am I doing here?!” haha! It takes a lot of pondering and dedication to paint a picture of your ideal life. I’m working on it too.

And finally: LOTTO! Um, I’d invest to live off interest for SURE, as well as hire the maid. I’d quit my job to give me time to be my own personal chef, and I might put myself through school again to go for my RD. And take many short trips to see all the states I have not seen yet, and then hit up europe. And send my parents to Hawaii. haha! Man, there would be SO MUCH TO DO!!

Money complicates everything though, right?? mo money, mo problems!

    • Tara April 15, 2010, 10:12 am

oh and absolutely I’d donate some to http://www.thetalkingfarm.org, this local food organization I volunteer for, so they can build their education center and get the urban farm off the ground!

    • caitlin April 15, 2010, 12:57 pm

heheh i know! everyone said i sounded differently than they expected.

its OK to feel lost after college… trust me. i think very few people know what they are doing. hmm. something to blog about at lunch.

  • Olivia @ Blissful Runner April 15, 2010, 10:12 am

Ooh! I love this game! I would:
Buy a bigger home along the water somewhere
Quit my job and travel … A LOT!
Upgrade to a gym with a pool
Hire a maid (I’m with you on that one!)
    *sigh* … I love wishful thinking…

  • Heather (Heather's Dish) April 15, 2010, 10:14 am

oh man, if it was simple as just winning the lottery i would:
    -quit my job and travel
-buy a newer and bigger home in Colorado
    -get 2 new cars
-buy a home in Hawaii and one in the Hamptons
-travel and work on writing a book
-finish paying of all of my parents’ and my own debt

nice to dream, isn’t it?! 🙂

  • Kellie@obsessivelyhealthy April 15, 2010, 10:18 am

I would buy a house and try and pay back all those who have helped my husband and I out when we have needed it. I would also love to find a young struggling family and just give them a million dollars anonymously. How fun would that be!

    • Caitlin April 15, 2010, 1:00 pm

i would love to do that too.

  • Samantha April 15, 2010, 10:20 am

I would send an Operation Beautiful note to God, thanking him for answering my prayer!!!!

    • Caitlin April 15, 2010, 1:00 pm

      hehe loves it!

  • Mary April 15, 2010, 10:22 am

    oh man! I would
    1. pay off all of my student loans and pay for grad school
    2. give some to my sister to help her pay for college so she doesnt have debt like me
    3. give money to my parents so they can live a little more comfortably.
    4. put the rest in savings.

  • emptynutjar April 15, 2010, 10:23 am

I would first pay off all my debt and loans and car and line of credits, etc. Then I would give a HUGE portion to my parents , and divided amounts to my sisters families. Then I would take some money and pursue a career I actually enjoyed. Then I would donate a lot to charity.

But I doubt there would be much left after I first paid off my debt…I am really stuck, shall I say 🙁

  • Leah @ L4L April 15, 2010, 10:26 am

I’d pay off all my and my family’s debt. I’d buy a house. And a new car. Quit my job. Travel the world. Invest and live off the interest basically.

  • Melissa April 15, 2010, 10:28 am

Ohh! Fun! Okay, $100M would go to…

    1. Paying off student loans, my house, our cars, and credit cards.
    2. I would have our dream home built on a large piece of land out in Williamsburg, VA.
    3. Hand each set of parents (including sisters and their hubbies) $5M, and pay off their houses and bills.
    4. Buy my husband his Humvee and a true and trained German Shepherd.
    5. Donate to causes for: Mesothelioma research, Alzheimer’s, and March of Dimes.
    6. Donate to the World Wildlife Foundation.
    7. Buy a villa in Greece and in St. Lucia
    8. Quit my job and become a stay at home mom until my kids are in high school.
    9. Invest and live off the interest.
    10. Put aside money for traveling with ALL of my kids…when they’re capable of remembering.
    11. Hire a personal trainer.
    12. Take classes and become a nutritionist and personal chef. (For when the kids are in school!)

  • Christine @ Grub, Sweat and Cheers April 15, 2010, 10:31 am

Move to England or Ireland and begin my dream of being somewhat self-sufficient so I’d have a big old country house with a massive garden and chickens…and an aga…oh I’d love an aga.

I think what I would love the most would be the time money buys. I’d be able to stay home and not have to work, as would my hubby, and that would buy us priceless time with our two little girls.

  • Danielle (Coffee Run) April 15, 2010, 10:32 am

    The push-ups are going well!

If I won the lottery, I’d probably but half of it in a savings account and then buy myself a car & a house 😎

  • Therese April 15, 2010, 10:34 am

Ohhh!!! I always love the lotto question! Makes me happy! 😀
    I would:
    – Invest a bunch of it.
    – Buy a couple of houses and then rent them out (’cause I’m greedy I guess and would make MORE money).
    – Quit work and start investing my time into the projects I have been meaning to do (i.e., starting a program teaching running to the developmentally handicapped).
    – Pay off the mortgages of my family members and take them on an awesome vacation.
    – Travel the world for a year.
    – Buy a house in New Zealand.
    – Invest in something I believe in.
    – Create a bucket list and start checking it off!

Yeah…now back to my job, pretending I’m doing it because I don’t need the money…

  • Jessica @ The Process of Healing April 15, 2010, 10:38 am

I’d donate some to charities, give some to family, and open my own bakery!

  • Amber K @ sparkpeople April 15, 2010, 10:42 am

Investing, buying a house, paying off student loans, and getting some HEALTH INSURANCE!!!!!

I had been slacking completely on push-ups, which I fully realized when yesterday I couldn’t even do my usual five. I am fully commited now to doing them regularly! Upper body strength is my goal!

    • Caitlin April 15, 2010, 1:01 pm

try doing 5 regular ones and then 5 more girlie ones.

  • Tina April 15, 2010, 10:46 am

    I would:

    1. have my hubby quit his job that he hates!!
    2. pay off all our debt
    3. give $ to family and friends
    4. college funds for all my nephews and my niece
    5. invest
    6. TRAVEL, TRAVEL, TRAVEL !!!

  • Tracy April 15, 2010, 10:53 am

Is Harry’s niece in The Burgh, and was she born on April Fool’s Day?!? (Asking because I know someone who just had a baby girl named Addison). Very likely just a coincidence, but figured I’d ask anyway 🙂

    • Caitlin April 15, 2010, 1:03 pm

Nope! She was born on the 13th in Delaware 🙂 Addison must be the cool new name!

  • Me-Linh @ Sweet and Sweat April 15, 2010, 10:55 am

I WOULD DO EVERYTHING ON YOUR LIST FOR SURE! Maybe take a few years off of college too 🙂 But I’m halfway done so maybe not. But I would definitely adopt another beagle and get so many massages for me and my famfam

  • Midgetkeeper April 15, 2010, 10:56 am

My Husband and I talk about this all the time.

We’ve decided to invest most of it.

  • Christine April 15, 2010, 10:59 am

Love this question… my husband and I do this all the time!!
    – invest so we don’t have to worry about the future
    – quit my job and do something that I look forward to every morning
    – buy land so my husband can fulfill his dream of building houses for a living
    – pay off our debt and that of our immediate family
    – buy a vacation house big enough to fit all our friends and family…. at once!
    – travel to Italy and Ireland
    – donate time and money to cancer research
    – start making babies since we wouldn’t have to worry about money any more 😉

  • Midgetkeeper April 15, 2010, 10:59 am

    Oops comment posted too soon.

    Travel as much as possible.
Give an equal amount to our siblings, and a little more to our parents.
Buy our dream house and continue living life as it is, with a little more money 😀

Fun! I would definitely be up for daily massages! I would:
    – Quit my job ASAP
    – Buy a new house
    – Pay my FIL’s medical bills
    – Donate to various charities
    – Travel, travel, travel!!
    – New wardrobe 😉
    – And save/invest the rest!

  • Sarah April 15, 2010, 11:02 am

    I would:
1- Invest my money so that I could live off it forever and ever and ever.
    2- Go travelling.
3- Give money to my family.
4- Buy myself a couple of houses/apartments here and there. (one of which would have to have a swimming pool and full gym). 😉
5- Go on an international shopping spree… ooooohhhhhhhhh.
6- Hire a housekeeper, cleaner, fitness instructor, and personal chef to keep my healthy.

Funnily enough, I wouldn’t actually change my life all that much. Even though I feel totally lost where I am right now, I still believe that I need to go through it to figure out what inspires me, so that I can be really happy in my life. Running away wouldn’t do that. So, I guess in a way, I’m happy where I am…

    • Caitlin April 15, 2010, 1:04 pm

      i love your last thought!

  • Michelle @ Give Me the Almond Butter April 15, 2010, 11:17 am

I absolutely love the bowl you put your oatmeal in. It’s very beautiful.

    1. I would buy a house in Northern California, Spain and an apartment in Maryland so I could see my boyfriend more than once every three months.
    2. Travel around the world.
    3. Donate lots to the American Cancer Society, no-kill shelters and Invisible Children
    4. Go on a luxurious vacay
    5. and for sure invest lots so I can be a stay-at-home-mom and live at whole foods with out worry 😉

  • Ashlee April 15, 2010, 11:21 am

I love reading your blog! I gets lots of recipe and meal ideas from you! I added you to my blog roll today 🙂

  • Carrie H April 15, 2010, 11:22 am

I would buy a cabin in the Wyoming mountains near a trout stream on lots of land and move there. I’d also spend enough so my family could come stay any time, but in their own cabin! That’s been my dream since I was probably five, when I started telling my dad I’d do that if I won a lot of money. I also used to tell him I’d take both of us to his birthplace, Linz, Austria, where he hasn’t been since he was a toddler.

Of course, now that I’m older, I’d do all that *after* investing wisely, paying off (school and homeowner’s) debt and donating to charity!

  • Lindsay April 15, 2010, 11:23 am

I would definately hire a trainer and cook, oh and house cleaner!
and I would mover closer to my family, and volunteer instead of work!

  • Lisa April 15, 2010, 11:33 am

A co-worker of mine actually won $20K recently on the lottery. She paid off her credit card and car payment. If I won the lottery, I’d pay off all debts, go on a really kickass vacation and finish the kitchen remodel on our house!!!

    • Caitlin April 15, 2010, 1:05 pm

that’s awesome! i knew a guy who won the second level of the lottery, so he got like $100,000. He gave it to his dad to control so he wouldnt blow it (he was like 21… smart move).

  • eatdrinkandbemerrynyc April 15, 2010, 11:36 am

    Ah I LOVE this game!!!!

    1. Buy a fabulous loft penthouse in Manhattan. My apartment would have a private elevator. Obvi. 🙂
    2. Get a Swiss Mountain dog puppy.
    3. Have a personal trainer 6 days a week
    4. Quit my job and pursue my other interests which includes going back to school without worrying about money.
    5. Volunteer 5 days a week at a local homeless shelter or with children with disabilities.
    6. Have my housekeeper come once a week instead of 2x’s a month.
    7. Take a vacation around the world 🙂
    8. Of course include friends and family in all of my fabulosity. And eat at every restaurant in Manhattan. The end 🙂

  • Nikky April 15, 2010, 11:39 am

I’d put half into high interest savings/CDs etc.. the rest would go to paying off my debt, my mom and my boyfriend’s mom’s debts (both have lost their homes). Then… I’d buy a bunch of acres and build a house (plus a barn and add some horses and another house for my mom/sibs), quit my job so I could go to school full time, get married, travel… probably that’s it. Use the rest to live on. Oh, except for the condo in San Diego. I’d buy one of those. 🙂

  • Ellen Collis April 15, 2010, 11:40 am

I heart Grape Nuts—haven’t had them in 4ever though. Anyway, since I’m living paycheck to paycheck (I know, boo woo, I chose to live in NYC), I really can’t even FATHOM what it woudl be like to win the Lotto. I don’t even know where to begin. I’m sure I’d move to a bigger apt (Umm yeah, it would be sweet if I didn’t have to share a room with my sister at 29 years old!), pay off the taxes I owe for 2009, get a personal trainer and chef and shopper. Ha! Lord knows what else…just thinking about this is getting me excited, so I think it’s time to stop and step back into reality 🙂

PS. I did 4×10 pushups yesterday!

  • Rachel April 15, 2010, 11:46 am

    My lotto winnings:

-Pay off all my student loans and misc. debt
-Build my boyfriend’s parents a house on their 120 acre plot of land they live on now. (They are in a trailer on the land)
-Buy my parents a house and two cars of their choosing
    -Buy a house
-Buy my boyfriend and I two cars
-Take off for a year with my boyfriend and backpack around the world
-Become a certified nutritionist and group exercise instructor
-Buy a whole new wardrobe and all the workout gear I’ve ever wanted
-Put money away for my dream wedding

    INVEST the rest

  • Shannon April 15, 2010, 11:58 am

Ooh, LOVE this game! Great reading everyone’s lists! I especially like the “leave really good tips” one. Such an easy way to make someone’s day!

    Here’s mine:
    – Invest 75% of it and live off the interest
    – Buy a house in a nice suburb of DC, a house at a nice beach within driving distance of DC, and a flat in San Sebastian, Spain.
    – Travel, travel, travel with my husband, espec. to Fiji and Phuket
    – Quit my job and go back to school full time for speech pathology
    – Work part time as a public school-based Speech Therapist so I can stay home most of the day with my kiddies.
    – Have kiddies! More than 2 🙂
    – Buy my husband a motorcycle and lessons (scares me, but he wants it so badly!)
    – Buy my parents a house and pay for someone to dispose of theirs and their stuff (they’re hoarders)
    – Set up a college trust fund for my BBBS “little sister”
    – Donate to a school I’m passionate about in Ecuador
    – Buy a Garmin for everyone in my little running group
    – Hire a personal trainer and house cleaner
    – Pay for a fabulous vacation for all of my girlfriends every year
    – Pay for a fantastic family reunion every year
    – Register for a gazillion races
    – Buy all my workout clothes from lululemon
    – Foster a dog or 3 🙂
Gosh – I could go on all day! But I’ll save you the space, haha.

  • Melissa April 15, 2010, 12:06 pm

    LOVE this topic
-invest but since I know nothing let my friend who just got laid off from his job do it all and pay him
-buy an SUV to haul my kids around in. I love my car (just paid it off TODAY!) but need something big enough to put my bike in
    -Disney Trip!
    -Disney Princess Half
-Give my brother the cash to quit his job and travel and then pay for whatever career decisions/school he wants to make
-Money for the parents and my aunt

  • Julie @savvyeats April 15, 2010, 12:20 pm

    Invest it for the interest.
    Keep blogging.
    Open a bakery.
Travel around the world for fun foodie bike trips like what I am doing in Italy.
    Get nice furniture.
    Donate a ton.
    🙂

  • Maura April 15, 2010, 12:25 pm

Oh, I love this game!! I would:
-Invest most of it and live off the interest
-Pay back my parents for my brother’s college education and my own
-Set aside money for medical school/residency/fellowship for me and the broski’s higher Ed
-Donate a large portion to cancer research, Make-a-Wish, St. Jude’s (I’m currently doing work w/ cancer research which explains my passion for it!)
-Buy seasons tix to the Red Sox & the Patriots
-Buy my dream condo in Boston (one for the ‘rents as well) & a summer house on Nantucket
-Hire a personal trainer (6x/week) & then hopefully a totally new wardrobe

I could probably keep going 🙂 Enjoy the day!

  • Sarah W. April 15, 2010, 12:27 pm

I love the lotto game 😉 have you ever watched the TLC shows on loterry winners? they run marathons of it occassionally, “how the lottery changed my life”

I would consult with attorneys/financial advisors to figure out how to invest the money so that us, our future children and our parents are set for life.

Pay off our mortgage & build a house WE want WHERE we want it.

Buy 2 houses in NC – one for my parents and one for my husbands family (we like to vacation in Nagshead every year w/ them

i would go back to school to get my RD

hubby would continue working and then eventually open a restaurant that I would help him with 🙂

buy a house in tropical place

    travel

hubby would want lots of cars

    • Caitlin April 15, 2010, 1:06 pm

yes! did you see the lottery winner who bought a bunch of teepee motels? it was weird.

  • Cassie @ A Very Busy Mind April 15, 2010, 12:29 pm

    – pay off my school loans
    – give LOTS to my parents

Actually, I’d have to re-evaluate after those two things were taken care of. They would be my top two concerns.

  • Nicci@NiftyEats April 15, 2010, 12:29 pm

I would give money to my church. Remodel my Great Grandmothers house for her. Give money to family and pay in full for my borthers college, when he starts. Then buy a hosue, travel and spend wisely. Oh, a cruise is in store for with friends. LAST: Quit my job, so I can take a course to teach Yoga and blog. 🙂

  • Ali @ Food, Fitness, Fashion April 15, 2010, 12:29 pm

    I would:
    1. Pay my mom and dad back for college, private school, cars and wedding stuff the footed the bill for.
    2. I would quit my job
    3. Travel
    4. Get the work done on my house so we could move in quickly
    5. Buy a few pairs of Tory Burch flats 😉
    6. Help my friend who is struggling financially
    7. Buy Adam and new car
    8. finish my current masters and get another one.
    9. BLOG MORE!
    10. Run a bunch of races and pay all my friends entry fees for them.
    11. Give a lot to charity

  • Courtney Can Eat April 15, 2010, 12:32 pm

Travel. Help my family. Live debt-free. 🙂 Can I ask where you got your awesome placemat?

    • Caitlin April 15, 2010, 1:06 pm

      Crate and Barrel

  • Catherine April 15, 2010, 12:37 pm

Oh I love this game!!! I think the first thing I would do is pay off all of my loans and then do a bit of traveling with the fiance – no more waiting til my honeymoon next year to climb Kilimajaro! Next I would enroll myself in the best culinary school I can get into – Cordon Bleu perhaps?? 😉

  • Diana @ frontyardfoodie April 15, 2010, 12:53 pm

Hmm, this is a fun one to think about…I love hearing everyone’s responses.

First thing I’d do is pay the friggin’ taxes on it because shoot, the IRS gets you for real on that stuff. Then, I’d…

    1. sell my house and buy one with sunny spots for my nice big garden.

    2. travel with my husband during the off-gardening season.

    3. pay off my parents and in-laws mortgages and whatever debt they might have.

    4. Stay home with my family and live a quiet and happy life with friends and family around me while my money either sits in the bank or grow with interest in smart investments.

I guess I’m not extravagant but I do hear stories about people who win that much money and then go bankrupt.

  • Katie April 15, 2010, 1:07 pm

Pay off all my debt, take a trip somewhere special and buy a killer pair of shoes! 🙂

  • Kelly April 15, 2010, 1:15 pm

I love this question. My husband and I often do the what if game.

    1) Give each couple in our family $1million.

    2) Set up college funds for our nieces.

    3) Pay off my parent’s mortgage so they don’t have to work so hard.

    4) Buy our Toy Hauler and travel the country with the bike.

    5) Buy a piece of property in Montana, Utah, Colorado, or one of the Dakotas and build a totally green house.

    6) Quit my job. Go to school to be a nutritionist and personal trainer. This is a dream but what the heck!

  • Mastering Public Health April 15, 2010, 1:16 pm

Jillian Michael’s SHRED definitely improved my push-up ability but I have slacked off a wee bit. For some reason, the night/next day after I’ve done push-ups, the right side of my head (like, skull) hurts. It’s really weird! I’m thinking it’s a shoulder muscle that must radiate up through the neck and over the ear? After all, everything is connected. Does anyone else have this experience?

    • Caitlin April 15, 2010, 1:19 pm

that hasnt happened to me but maybe you should look up proper push up form online and then do it in front of a mirror…. your arms might be placed funny. worth a shot!

  • Annie April 15, 2010, 1:18 pm

    Those strawberries look so juicy!
My pushups are less than impressive. Do three, stop for a juice break… come back and do another 7 later that night… forget about pushups for a week. 😉

First, to celebrate winnings take my family and the bf out to dinner AND order dessert! Woo woo!

Learn more about investing and patience

Pay off next three years of college for myself and pay for each of my brothers to go to school too

Still walk + bike a ton, but buy a car. A green or blue Jeep Liberty for travels

    Get a Nikon (maybe a D80)

    Purchase a comfortable bed

Take some really fun travels each summer (Nova Scotia, Ireland, and Europe… so many places in Europe)

Donate to CF and other foundations as I learn more about them

Go out for frozen yogurt more than any person should

Help my mom so she can work a little less and take better care of herself. Get massages for her once a week…think I’ll go along too haha

Build a camp in North Carolina. I would love to work with kids as a psychologist in a camp setting!

    Get a few puppies

Put away money for my kids and a future home

  • Diana April 15, 2010, 1:28 pm

    Hmmm let me see:

    – Invest it wisely so we could live off interest.(hell yeah)
    – Pay the rest of the loan we took to buy this house. Fix it then rent it or sell it.
    – Move to another place (still in Portugal)
    – Fix our summer house because it needs it so desperately. It’s an awesome house, but it’s old and could use some (a lot of) changes.
    – Travel, travel, travel
    – Finally meet my friends that live in other countries
    – Give money to everybody in my immediate family
    – Hire a personal chef, personal trainer and a maid
    – Donate to some charities
    – Keep blogging of course

I wthink about this often it’s not even funny. 😛

  • Angharad April 15, 2010, 1:28 pm

    I LOVE this game!!!
    1. Buy houses in Minneapolis, London and Austin.
    2. Go travel round the world in style. Flashpacker rather than backpacker!
    3. Give money to my parents, siblings and in-laws.
    4. Massages weekly, for SURE.
    5. Go on a MASSIVE clothes shopping spree. Every month. Haha.

That’s enough dreaming for now…have a great day!

  • megan April 15, 2010, 1:36 pm

i’m seriously late to this topic, but I love it. We talk about it all the time! I would:
    pay off our house
    give to church/missions
    travel
    start trying for kids
quit my job and go to culinary school
support 500 kids through compassion or world vision
save a ton so that once we had lots of kids we could build a nice new house and travel with them

  • Lindsay @ The Ketchup Diaries April 15, 2010, 1:37 pm

    1) Invest it wisely for interst, as you said.
    2) Give my parents enough to retire comforably.
    3) Buy a house on Cape Cod and possibly Italy. I’d also rent a place a high-end condo in NYC.
    4) Buy a pair of Christian Louboutis 🙂
    5) Hire a chef and personal trainer, but not before…
    6) I drove cross-country!!

  • Laura April 15, 2010, 1:39 pm

    Hey Caitlin!
First thing, I thought I would de-lurk and tell you that about a month ago, I actually started a push up challenge of my own, and that was to do 100 pushups every day! Obviously not all at one time. 🙂 I do sets of 20 multiple times throughout the day, including on my cubicle floor at work! In one month I have seen a DRASTIC improvement and I feel like I could do pushups all the live long day! So keep up the good work–I’m sure you’ll see results!
Also, if I won the lottery I’d:
take my mom on the most amazing vacation to Europe and Russia, because she’s never been out of the country (except to Puerto Rico)
Pay off all my loans (that’s the first thing I’d do, actually)
Buy an apartment in NYC, where I live
And open a brewery with my boyfriend, who is homebrewer extraordinare.

    • Caitlin April 15, 2010, 1:47 pm

      100 push ups? You’re a baller!

  • Caroline April 15, 2010, 1:44 pm

I have a friend who just had a baby and named her Addison Bailey! Her initials are ABC 😀
If I won the lottery I would… pay my parents back for their help with my original college degree
Quit my job and go back to school full time
Upgrade my living situation, probably buy a condo?
    Buy clothes!
But mostly invest it so that I can re-establish myself easily after I get my 2nd degree in nutrition!

  • Cynthia (It All Changes) April 15, 2010, 1:54 pm

First I would donate to my church to help with lots of things. Then I would pay off my, Momma’s and my MIL debt. I’d purchase a home somewhere I could retire to. I’d travel and take a real Honeymoon. I’ve go back to school for my M.Div. And I’d invest the heck out of it so I could live off it.

And I love what I do so I would totally keep working and ministering in THe Salvation ARmy…just a little more comfortably 🙂

  • Courtney @ Pancakes & Postcards April 15, 2010, 2:09 pm

stop wondering about what i SHOULD do and instead focus on what i CAN do. and how i can leave as much brightness and good vibes in this life and on this earth as possible… without worrying about the small stuff 🙂 like, bills. rent. all the fun things!

  • Caitlin April 15, 2010, 2:15 pm

well I am graduating next month, so instead of looking for a job…I would just travel, travel, travel!! lol 🙂

  • RhodeyGirl April 15, 2010, 2:22 pm

I would def get daily massages. My friends in Cartagena have a lady come to the house each day for a massage. I want that!

  • Denise (the apple hill adventurer) April 15, 2010, 2:36 pm

    cute bowl 🙂
have you tried grape nut Os ? they are so good!

  • Leanne April 15, 2010, 2:47 pm

I love this game too!!!! I would take my entire family to Hawaii, start up my own organic coffee shop/bistro, study abroad, take my mom to Finland, buy a subaru… the list goes on and on.

  • Caitlin @ Right Foot Forward April 15, 2010, 3:05 pm

    Ooo I love this game!
-buy a brownstone in Boston and an apt here in NYC
    -donate to charity
    -quit my job
    -give money to my family
    -travel!
-invest, but keep working.. find a job I truly love

  • Katharine April 15, 2010, 3:44 pm

Good question! I would donate a big chunk of it to find a cure for cystic fibrosis. Then I’d give enough to each of my parents to retire comfortably, buy myself and the bf a house, go on a trip with my best girl friends, get my Masters in Writing, and buy a flat in Paris. Mmm that would be nice! 🙂

  • Orla April 15, 2010, 4:26 pm

We just had one of the biggest lotto wins here in Ireland 16million euro and it aNd it was rolling over since march 10. I was very disappointed I didn’t win. I had convinced myself I would win and I also had it spent. Back to reality I suppose…

  • maria April 15, 2010, 5:38 pm

I’d definitely invest some, but I would also buy a nice, but not too fancy house where I could live comfortably. And a personal trainer and maid would be at the top of my list, too! 🙂

The husband said he would build a church with some of it.

  • Amanda (The Shoe Perspective) April 15, 2010, 6:47 pm

If I won the lotto I’d give some to charity, and keep some for college.

  • Laura April 15, 2010, 7:41 pm

Yes! I’m late to the game, but this is one of my FAVOURITE daydreams! I’d set up Medical centres in hotspots for HIV/AIDs and TB worldwide- e.g. Subsaharan Africa, Russia etc, complete with free medical facilities, free meals for patients, an outreach service, research laboratories, and teams to liase with the big pharma companies to give us the much needed drugs! HIV/AIDs is no longer a death sentence, it doesn’t even have to shorten someones life, so its tragic what it is doing to many in the world. Other than that, I’d invest, invest, support my family and any other causes that I thought I could help with, and keep enough money behind to buy loads of tanks, guns, armed helicopters and a huge army and force the world to turn vegetarian he he 😉

  • Kristin (Cook, Bake and Nibble) April 15, 2010, 8:43 pm

    1. Put some in the bank
    2. Give some to charity
    3. Shopping spree! Duh. 😉
    4. Buy my own house
    5. Get the puppy I have been wanting!

    xo

  • Di April 16, 2010, 7:41 am

    This is a great question.

    1) Pay off my mortgage and student loans.
    2) Take a Leave of Absence from work and travel the world.
    3) Save at least half. $50 million is still a lot to play with!
    4) Open a bar, and then possibly quit said job that I took the LOA from.
    5) Buy a “vacation” home somewhere.
    6) Give my brother enough money to buy a place when he gets his masters’ degree.
    7) Pay for my cousin to finish up her bachelor’s with no loans.
    8) Give my parents a good chunk so they can BOTH retire this year and never have to worry about money.
    9) Buy a condo in Boston.

  • Natalie April 16, 2010, 11:37 am

The Lotto game is great! Just a couple ideas:
    1. Start some not for profit groups: Funding for hearing aids for kids and adults, a dog sanctuary, and health and fitness programs for kids
    2. Invest
    3. Travel around the world (climb Mt. Kilimanjaro!)
    4. Gift to family
Thanks for getting the wheels turning, how fun!

  • John April 16, 2010, 10:03 pm

$100 million? Buy a golf course and golf everyday, Give 1-2 million each to immediate family members and tell them to leave me alone(you know don’t ask for $ again), go on a “my favorite blogger” tour visiting the bloggers and cities they live in, many more things I imagine.
