A Walk to the Library

in All Posts

Maggie has very short legs:

James does not:

(James also has a brain; Maggie does not.)

I always feel so guilty because I under-walk James because Maggie doesn’t really enjoy walks.  Not all dachshunds are as lazy as Maggie – but trust me, Maggie prefers the couch.  I’ve been trying to make an effort to walk James solo more often so we can go faster and further.

Tonight, I had to return two library books so I took James on a 25-minute stroll (about 1.75 miles) to the library.  I think he enjoyed himself!  I still feel bad leaving Maggie home alone, though.  🙁

Earlier this afternoon, I snacked on a fruit platter, which included a pear and strawberries:

Plus a generous scoop of Justin’s Maple Almond Butter, which is amazing and worth every penny.

Dinner was pretty veggie-centric:

IMG_8602

In my sammie was grilled mushrooms and zucchini plus a huge glob of ketchup.  The bread was two servings (about 300 calories) of this wonderful whole wheat naan bread:

IMG_8601

And on the side, I had roasted parsnip and carrot fries and another glob of ketchup (hey, at least it’s organic):

I make the parsnip and carrot fries by rinsing and peeling the veggies, slicing them thinly, coating in olive oil and salt, and roasting at 425 degrees for about 20 minutes.

And…. I’m off to pack for FitBloggin!  I don’t leave until Thursday, but tomorrow is going to be insane, and I won’t have time.

I love naan. It has become my new best friend with my recent hummus addiction!

  • Evan Thomas March 16, 2010, 8:55 pm

I really love all the veggies at dinner!
And I guess it’s like if one of your children wanted to play soccer, but the other didn’t, you couldn’t forbid the first from trying out for the team?

  • sophia March 16, 2010, 8:55 pm

No need to feel guilty then…looks like Maggie doesn’t want a walk either!
Still…I didn’t know dogs can be lazy! ;-p

  • Beth @ Beth's Journey to Thin March 16, 2010, 8:55 pm

That fruit platter looks awesome…. I want to try that maple almond butter!!! yum!

  • meg c. March 16, 2010, 8:56 pm

that is the best pic of maggie – she def looks like she lacks a brain hahah. say hi to my sis at fitbloggin!

  • Sarah (Running to Slow Things Down) March 16, 2010, 8:56 pm

Naan is so delicious! I usually broil it with a bit of parmesan on top. Great for dunking in spaghetti sauce. 😀

Your pups are always too adorable.

  • Jenn @ Livewellfit March 16, 2010, 8:57 pm

Maggie is too darn cute!!! I used to have a pup named Ginger. She had NO BRAIN whatsoever! She used to eat bees in our backyard, then go drink water (from the stinging I assume) and come right back to the same spot again and continue eating her bees! 🙂

    • caitlin March 16, 2010, 9:00 pm

      who eats bees? LOL

  • Whitney @ whitinspired.wordpress.com March 16, 2010, 8:59 pm

I can’t take both of my dogs on a walk either :(. I just can’t handle both of them. I always take my golden retriever and leave my poor sheltie at home. And I always feel so awful!

  • Jenny March 16, 2010, 9:00 pm

I love long walks, they’re so much more enjoyable than getting stuck in rush hour traffic. You can enjoy the weather and the scenery and light… perfect:)

See you tomorrow at the Reitz!

  • chau March 16, 2010, 9:02 pm

how much better is justin almond butter? ive tried whole foods store brand, trader joe’s store brand, and barney almond butter. of all three, i loved TJ’s the most and haven’t tried justin…

    • caitlin March 16, 2010, 9:11 pm

better than barney butter! i havent tried WF or TJ brand

      • chau March 17, 2010, 11:05 am

thanks. i know for sure whole foods carries justin’s but the price always was the thing that held me back. 😉 can’t spend my whole paycheck there right? 😀

  • Jenna March 16, 2010, 9:03 pm

hahaha, I love that photo of Maggie and her tongue hanging slightly out!

I’m also a big offender of dipping my veggies in ketchup, love it!

  • jo March 16, 2010, 9:04 pm

Love the dog pics and stories. so cute

  • Allie (Live Laugh Eat) March 16, 2010, 9:13 pm

I swear every time break open one of those Justin’s pouches. I just squeeze it directly into my mouth. And then I run my teeth against it to get every last drop….and then I cut it open and lick the rest of it.

…I think we have something in common 🙂

  • Anna @ Newlywed, Newly Veg March 16, 2010, 9:15 pm

Aww, I took one of my dogs on a run this morning and had to leave the other one at home…it made me feel so guilty!

  • Lindsay Perrone (goodiesgalore) March 16, 2010, 9:19 pm

Maggs doesn’t mind some free time.

  • Ashley March 16, 2010, 9:23 pm

I seriously love when you add a post about your cute pups! I was laughing about sweet Maggie! Awwww, bless her heart:)

I can’t walk my two dogs together either, too difficult with one toy and one standard poodle!

  • Julie March 16, 2010, 9:24 pm

Oh my god, I love that picture of Maggie!! She kind of looks creepy! lol

  • Jolene (www.everydayfoodie.ca) March 16, 2010, 9:24 pm

I love that you like veggies now 🙂

  • Haleigh March 16, 2010, 9:31 pm

Tandoori naan bread is delicious! I actually created an amazing pizza with the naan as a crust.. it turned out fantastic! And I completely agree, Justin’s maple almond butter is worth every penny!

  • Amber K @ sparkpeople March 16, 2010, 9:37 pm

I have never heard of naan, how interesting! Although I’m a mustard girl.

Some crazy chemicals in ketchup I can’t get past, plus my mustard just tastes….better! Yum! =)

  • Sammi March 16, 2010, 9:40 pm

I totally cracked up at the brain part! My dog is super lazy too. I took her out to run around today and after like 5 minutes she wouldn’t run when I ran towards her, she ignored the ball when I threw it, and she wouldn’t chase me anymore lol.
Carrot fries sound good! Maybe that’s what I’ll do with my leftover carrots! 🙂

  • Brendali March 16, 2010, 9:41 pm

Poor Maggie, that picture of her doesn’t help her cause either! She looks like a little goofy! They are still both adorable!

  • Nancy March 16, 2010, 9:46 pm

How do you grill the veggies? I never do it because I think it takes too long – lame excuse I’m sure.

    • caitlin March 17, 2010, 8:15 am

get a george foreman! so easy and perfect for grilling vegetables!

  • Jessica @ The Process of Healing March 16, 2010, 9:50 pm

“James also has a brain; Maggie does not” <- literally made me LOL!!!! My dog is also pretty lacking in the brain department… But you can't help but love them all the more!

  • Megan March 16, 2010, 9:50 pm

i love that naan! i looove your little babies. every time i see a maggie picture, i see her eyes and can tell there is nothing going on behind them… so adorable lol.

  • Joelle (The Pancake Girl) March 16, 2010, 9:55 pm

I always mean to try naan, but never do.. Looks fluffy and yummy, though.

    Have fun at Fit Blogging!

  • Grapeful March 16, 2010, 9:56 pm

That picture of Maggie really captures your descriptions of her “not being all there” perfectly! Her expression is just so priceless in that picture!

  • Britt @ Runnerbelle March 16, 2010, 9:59 pm

Poor Maggie…. not all pups get the brains. Sometimes I wonder about my Reggie….. sometimes he’s a smart guy, other times not so much.

  • ari March 16, 2010, 10:04 pm

lol i always use so much ketchup too! <3 it.
also, i'm trying really hard to like justin's maple almond butter, but i just don't think it has enough of a maple flavor. maybe i should try it with pears and strawberries.

  • Karen w March 16, 2010, 10:06 pm

Lol – at least one of them has a brain 🙂

  • ActiveEggplant March 16, 2010, 10:11 pm

Seems like parsnips are the “in” veggie right now – where can I find them? I’ve checked my Publix and Sam’s Club…either I’m overlooking or they just don’t have them!

    • caitlin March 16, 2010, 10:23 pm

they are next to the carrots in the produce section 🙂

  • Jalita March 16, 2010, 10:13 pm

I have two dogs, too. I always hate leaving one behind when I take the other for a walk.

  • Shannon (The Daily Balance) March 16, 2010, 10:17 pm

i meant to buy parsnips at the grocery this weekend, but they were all out! I got some turnips, though — should be interesting 😉

  • Angie March 16, 2010, 10:18 pm

That picture of your dog cracks me up EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. Her eyes kill me.

  • Stephanie March 16, 2010, 10:21 pm

In Europe I saw a lot of older ladies carry their dogs in big totes around town. I know this may sound silly, but have you considered carrying Maggie in a purse for dogs? It might add an additional work out 😉 This way she won’t feel left out/lonely?

    • caitlin March 16, 2010, 10:23 pm

if maggie was a little lighter, i would! but she’s 15 pounds… oof. and she’s awkwardly shaped… LOL

  • Bridget March 16, 2010, 10:21 pm

At least Maggie has an excuse for being lazy with those little legs! I have a lazy chocolate lab. She is excited to go on walks and trots along for about 25 minutes, but the rest of the time she is lazy lazy lazy! She has been known to dive into a yard and lay down and refuse to move while we’re on a walk. I once had hopes she would be my running buddy…not so much!

  • Lisa (bakebikeblog) March 16, 2010, 10:44 pm

I am so in love with parnsip at the moment – it makes such good fries!

  • Heather (Heather's Dish) March 16, 2010, 11:02 pm

aw, that’s such a cute picture of miss maggie! i bet she didn’t mind not going on a walk 🙂 i need to try parsnip fries…but i’m too scared since i don’t know what it tastes like! are they sweet at all?

  • Jenna March 16, 2010, 11:25 pm

i had carrot fries tonight as well- so yummy!
    Jenna

  • Penny March 16, 2010, 11:41 pm

Oh my goodness, Maggie is precious.

  • *Andrea* March 17, 2010, 12:58 am

    they’re both so so cute!!

i LOVE that naan bread! i’mnot strong enough to eat only 1/2 a piece lol

  • Lizz @ Leading the Good Life March 17, 2010, 1:05 am

I can’t wait to try Justin’s Maple Almond Butter! I got a single serving pouch (so convenient)at the store last weekend, but I’m saving it for a quick-pack lunch or snack. I may not be able to hold out much longer, though! 🙂

  • Katie March 17, 2010, 3:05 am

I’ve not had Justin’s nut butters. I will be on the lookout! Also I’ve never had a parship. What does it taste like?

    • caitlin March 17, 2010, 8:15 am

its really delicious… its unlike any other veggie! but its similar in texture to a carrot.

  • Freya @ Brit Chick Runs March 17, 2010, 4:02 am

Yaay have fun at the Fit Bloggin thing, that’s goin to be awesome!
Good to see some parsnip fries – they’re my favourite food 😀

  • amanda@thegrainsofparadise March 17, 2010, 4:07 am

I’m totally crazy for those naans from Fabulous Flats! Amazing!
Love Love Love your doggies….so friggin cute!

  • Judy March 17, 2010, 5:10 am

I totally understand the guilt of not wanting to leave one dog!

Both mine enjoy their walks (they’re long haired chihuahuas, btw), but Chester is not real thrilled about walking when it’s really cold. Or really hot. And here we’ve lived in TX & NY — Lola is fine with pretty much everything except wet.

Luckily for me, Chester tends to gain weight relatively easily, so he really needs his walks — so I got over my guilt pretty quickly!

  • Diana (Mymarblerye) March 17, 2010, 7:46 am

I LOVEEE that tandoori indian bread! so moist! I can’t wait to hear about all the fitbloggin’ recaps and up to dates. Looks like it gonna be full of fun ladies.

  • Joanne March 17, 2010, 8:09 am

Good eat! Have a safe trip.
As for the doggy walks, will Maggie fit in like a baby back pack…you know, the ones you see Mommy’s have on their back and the baby sits in them? That way Maggie can go with you and James and only walk until she tires then ride on your back. That would be adorable 🙂

    • caitlin March 17, 2010, 8:17 am

i want a stroller for maggie so bad 🙂

  • Jess March 17, 2010, 8:54 am

I agree that Justin’s Nut Butter is awesome! I’m so lucky to live right outside of Boulder where it’s made, that I’ve been enjoying it for a few years now. Mmmmm.

  • Carolyn @ lovinlosing March 17, 2010, 9:16 am

I took the little dog to the dog park but left the big one at home last week. I felt bad, but the big one won’t play with other dogs (he only want to play fetch) and it’s too hard to control two dogs by myself.

  • Beth @ DiningAndDishing March 17, 2010, 9:47 am

Excited to meet you and everyone else at Fit Bloggin Caitlin!! 🙂

  • Kelly March 17, 2010, 10:07 am

Yum! So many veggies for dinner!

  • Lauren @ Eater not a runner March 17, 2010, 11:22 am

I’ve never made parsnip fries but that sounds delicious!

  • Ashley March 17, 2010, 11:25 am

see you in a few dayssss! let me know when you get in, i work right by the hotel 🙂

  • Cynthia (It All Changes) March 17, 2010, 11:51 am

I love the picture of Maggie!

Our dogs are really lazy but love long walks. Since they both have shorter legs we only do it a few times a week.

  • cara March 17, 2010, 2:51 pm

I have that same issue with my pups. One LOVESSSSSSSS to go go go, but the other one is bored and wants to give up. But I feel too guilty taking one out and not the other. I bet they would get over the jealously pretty quick though. ahha.

  • Sara March 17, 2010, 5:41 pm

Layla just dropped me a note on my blog that you are going to FitBloggin. I am as well. Look forward to meeting you. It should be alot of fun and very informative.

  • Sarah March 17, 2010, 9:28 pm

My doxie Charlie does NOT like long walks…or short walks in the rain…snow…or hot weather…he is VERY picky about where he puts his little stubby paws!
