Two A Day (Kind Of)

in All Posts

I feel like I’m officially in triathlon-training mode because I’m starting to tackle two forms of cardio each day!

I started off with a slow and steady 2.0 mile run.

IMG_5278

I opted to run on the treadmill instead of outside so I could stop if I needed to.  I wasn’t sure how my foot would hold up.  I’m pretty sure I irritated a tendon during the marathon.

My foot felt fine until Mile 1.9, and then it started to feel sore so I quit almost right away.  Not painful, just sore.  I might need a few weeks off from running completely – I’ll have see how it feels tomorrow.

After my run, I changed outfits:

And jumped in the pool!  (One piece bathing suits make me feel either 1) really hardcore or 2) 5 years old, depending on my mood).

Ryan actually joined me for the swim.  We chatted every 7 laps or so.  I’m definitely still in the beginning stages of swimming and need to take a LOT of breaks.

IMG_5281

I ended up doing another 750 meters in 30 minutes or so.  The triathlon distance will be TWICE AS LONG!  Eck!

Post-workout lunch:

IMG_5283

Return of the hummus, artichoke, and sundried tomato sammie – it’s SOOO good!  This is a weird thing for a vegetarian to say, but the artichokes are very meaty and kind of remind me of chicken…. in a good way.

And a bowl of cherries:

Time to get my work on!

Random question:  Do you feel comfortable getting naked in locker rooms?  Or do you change in a bathroom stall or hide behind a towel?

I always changed in “halvsies, so I’d change shorts, then tops, but don’t use the locker room at my current gym – I change at home then head out 🙂 I used to rent a locker at the gym at school and would shower quite often there!

  • Bonnie January 19, 2010, 12:38 pm

I feel the same way about one piece bathing suits!

I don’t mind changing so much in locker rooms, though I do try to find a less occupied area to strip down. (who wouldn’t? =P)
My pet peeve is the floor of my pool’s changing area. It’s disgusting! And it’s really hard to put on pants with shoes on!

  • Laura @ FindingAHealthyBalance...after a 100+ POUND weight loss! January 19, 2010, 12:41 pm

I always change in a “dressing room” or “bathroom”, as when I was really overweight I was too embarrassed to change out in the open and now I just like the privacy!

Yummy looking sandwich, I have Roasted Red Pepper humus & whole wheat pita chips for lunch today. =)

  • Casey @Spicy&Sweet January 19, 2010, 12:43 pm

I actually feel totally comfortable and don’t mind if other people are naked either–we’ve all got the same parts. 🙂 But I usually hide behind a towel b/c it’s kind of expected! Never really thought about that until now.

Although one time in my gym, a woman who must have been over 80 was doing naked yoga in the corner. That may have been taking it a teeny bit too far.

    • Caitlin January 19, 2010, 12:49 pm

YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSS old lady naked yoga sounds awesome!

    • Shelly January 19, 2010, 1:53 pm

Haha it’s always the older ladies who let it all hang out in the locker rooms I’ve been to. It kind of cracks me up. I don’t have a problem changing in front of my locker, but I do it as quickly as possible. There have been a few times I’ve seen women just standing around talking to their friend, totally naked.

      • Katie January 19, 2010, 2:08 pm

oh my gosh! Every Tues. night when I go to the gym there are about a dozen (very) old ladies who have just finished swimming, standing (and sometime sitting) around naked chatting! The first time I went in there I was so taken aback and embarrassed!! Now on Tuesdays, I remember to change at work before I go over to the gym 🙂

I don’t usually mind changing in the locker room, but I do it quickly and usually facing my locker.

  • Estela @ Weekly Bite January 19, 2010, 12:44 pm

My husband started his two a days. He’s training for his second 1/2 Iron Man.

  • Jessica @ How Sweet January 19, 2010, 12:44 pm

2 a days!! You go girl! 🙂 Working at the gym so long I just became used to changing in the locker room, but I do it quickly so I don’t become ‘the naked girl’ that walks around for 10 minutes.

  • Graze With Me January 19, 2010, 12:46 pm

That sandwich sounds amazing. I always forget how much I like sundried tomatoes.

I’m definitely that timid girl hiding in a bathroom stall…

  • Erin January 19, 2010, 12:48 pm

I’ll change in the regular locker room. But I never walk around without everything covered by something! Also, I’ve only ever showered at a gym once.

  • Paige (Running Around Normal) January 19, 2010, 12:48 pm

Great job on the workout 🙂
That sandwhich looks SO good. I need to get some artichokes.
I just change right there in the locker room. I don’t strut around nakie or anything, but I feel pretty confident that no one’s gawking at me, thus, I don’t feel uncomfortable just changing right there.

  • Lauren @ Eater not a runner January 19, 2010, 12:49 pm

I just change in the locker room, I’m not shy!

  • Veronica January 19, 2010, 12:49 pm

I try to change behind a towel or in the bathroom. I’m shy!

  • Leah @ L4L January 19, 2010, 12:51 pm

I don’t hide but I don’t relish in being naked either! I just minimize naked time! I’ll turn away from other people in the locker room and try and be as stealthy as possible without looking like a retard.

  • Ashley @ Good Taste. Healthy Me January 19, 2010, 12:53 pm

I change next to my locker but I kinda face the wall…especially when the ta-ta’s come out!

  • Lexi (BusyLittleLexi) January 19, 2010, 12:53 pm

I am always embarrassed to tell people I don’t know how to swim. Good luck with your training.

    I think one piece= hardcore 🙂

  • Matt January 19, 2010, 12:54 pm

I let it all be seen 😉

  • sarah w. January 19, 2010, 12:54 pm

gah sorry I’m confused you named that post 2 a days but I only see one workout (swimming & running). Are yo udoing another workout this afternoon/evening?

2 a days normally classifies doing a workout in the AM and then a SEPARATE workout in the afternoon or evening.

    • Caitlin January 19, 2010, 12:55 pm

I guess you’re technically right – I just think of Two A Days when you do two full workouts. I’ll change that title. LOL

      • sarah w. January 19, 2010, 1:20 pm

Its all good – I just didn’t want anybody getting confused. but running and then swimming is still HARDCORE!!!! I can’t wait until summer when I can swim again – if I can find a pool, dont think my neighborhood has one 🙁 fail!

  • Teacherwoman January 19, 2010, 12:54 pm

It was my understanding that 2-a-days were workouts at two separate times of the day, like a bike in the morning and swim in the evening… but way to go on getting both the run and the swim in today! 🙂

I don’t mind changing in the locker rooms… most of the women in there aren’t even watching, or looking, unless you stand there putting on your make-up or doing your hair while still naked. lol

  • Lily @ Lily's Health Pad January 19, 2010, 12:55 pm

I’m usually not too timid when changing in front of others. As long as their changing too, I can assume that they won’t be looking over and seeing more of me than they want to. But my current gym’s locker room is very open. As soon as a person walks into the room, the changing area is right there. Plus there are mirrors everywhere, so unsuspecting people who are simply washing their hands can easily glance up and feast their eyes upon naked bodies.

  • Lauren January 19, 2010, 12:56 pm

When I don’t change at home I change quickly in an unoccupied area, LOL I only take off one thing at a time and face the wall. If I shower, I change in a changing room connected to it after. My husband will NOT go in the locker room at our gym, the showers and everything are all out in the open…and the average age of the men there is probably 65 🙂 I am all for seniors working out and getting a discount, but I don’t understand why the guys don’t get shower stalls, its seems so unfair.

  • Sana January 19, 2010, 12:56 pm

I change in the bathroom! Sometimes there are kids ect. We have the old lady that lotions and blow dries her hair in the nude. By hair I mean ALL of it….

  • Kristen January 19, 2010, 12:57 pm

I don’t belong to a gym now but when I did, I tried to stay as covered up as possible when changing. Your locker room looks fabulous, though!

Swimming is such a great workout and I wish I could afford to get back to the pool. Even though I swam competitively for years when I was younger I think I would start slow again like you are doing. Best of luck!

  • BethT January 19, 2010, 12:57 pm

People in San Francisco are very free, so I have seen a lot of wrinkly saggy skin, cellulite and giant bushes in my gym locker room. I myself have none of these things, yet I still feel the need to be subtle about undressing. I don’t think everyone wants or needs to see my goods.

  • Jessica @ The Process of Healing January 19, 2010, 12:58 pm

I change at home before going to the gym but i would for sure not be changing out in the open! haha that would terrify me.

Your workout sounds hard! but props to you for stopping when you felt soreness in your foot. Good way to prevent further injury!

  • Katie@ Two Lives, One Lifestyle January 19, 2010, 12:59 pm

That sandwich is simple but looks oh so good, I have all the ingredients on hand too. As for the locker room, I almost always hide somewhere. Sometimes I’ll do a quick change but I’m definitely not gonna stand there and chat or apply lotion all over my body while completely nude. It seems as though the comfort level comes with age.. aka it’s always the much older generation taking their sweet nakie time.

  • Helga January 19, 2010, 12:59 pm

Haha, I know what you mean by feeling like a 5 year old in a one piece bathing suit!

Changing in front of others is not my favorite thing to do but I do it nevertheless. No hiding behind towels or in bathroom stalls.

  • Paige January 19, 2010, 1:00 pm

I don’t mind changing in the locker room, but I do it quickly and avoid eye contact. If it is really crowded, I will go to a bathroom stall and change. LOL!

  • John January 19, 2010, 1:03 pm

You can do 1500m no problem. I did an OlyTri 3 years ago with only 2months swim training and the 1500m went well in only 36min. Keep it up you’ll find the swim will be fine.

  • LindsayRuns January 19, 2010, 1:04 pm

I’m all about being naked! Quick about it now, but totally see myself as the old lady who shows the locker room just what 70 year old boobs look like.

    Glad you enjoyed your workout!

  • Lee January 19, 2010, 1:05 pm

I don’t mind changing in the locker room, but I don’t like it if there are people that I know in there.

  • Juli D. January 19, 2010, 1:07 pm

I don’t mind. I don’t sit around and jam out with my clam out the whole time though – I stay covered and switch my clothes quickly, but I really don’t care if someone sees my knockers or lady bits. We all got ’em.

    • becky January 19, 2010, 9:12 pm

HAHAHAHA “jam out with my clam out” is possibly the funniest expression I have ever heard. I’m officially inserting that phrase into every conversation I have for the next week.

      • becky January 19, 2010, 9:13 pm

I may just say it randomly too.

  • Heather (Heather's Dish) January 19, 2010, 1:07 pm

i don’t mind changing, but i don’t want ALL my stuff to be out there 🙂 if i need to get naked (to change into a bathing suit or something) i’ll typically hide behind a towel.

  • Britt @ Runnerbelle January 19, 2010, 1:08 pm

If I’m doing a quick change I’ll just do it in the locker room, but usually try to keep it somewhat covered up in the process (a lot of my coworkers are at the same gym or our work locker room…. just weird to be naked in front of them). If I’m showering, my gym has changing rooms right across from each shower, so its just easier to use that when I shower.

  • linda January 19, 2010, 1:15 pm

Yes, yes, yes… I still get uncomfortable changing in front of others. But still, I’m always amazed some people walk around fully naked. Am I the only one who finds this really disturbing?

  • Allison January 19, 2010, 1:16 pm

I have NO problem changing or walking around naked in the locker room. I generally tone it down in “public” because I think it makes other people really uncomfortable. I honestly think that it’s really liberating. I used to be freaked out about it… but forced myself to just get over it and it feels great to let go of my inhibitions.

  • Kathleen January 19, 2010, 1:16 pm

I worked out at the gym on campus and I lived nearby so I would shower and change at home. I have never showered at a gym (even though some are really nice) and I know that I am the kind of person to change in the bathroom stalls!

  • Krista January 19, 2010, 1:20 pm

I change REALLY fast and half my body at a time. I put my sportsbra on over my bra and then take my bra off so that my girls aren’t ever exposed. I cannot stand seeing nakedness in the locker room!! Seems like you either have the Fasties like myself or the Freebies who don’t notice that there are others around who do not want to see their nakedness. Ha!

  • Laura Georgina January 19, 2010, 1:20 pm

I don’t mind changing in the locker room when others are around, but I’m a bit skeeved if someone starts a conversation with me while they’re totally naked (and not getting dressed!).

  • katherine January 19, 2010, 1:21 pm

Look at you with your two workouts, I’m totally impressed! Glad your foot is just a little sore – seems to be on the mend since you’re being careful with it.

Re: locker room etiquette, I usually change in a series of steps that only leaves either my bottom half or top half exposed at any given time. I feel like it’s just not very accepted to go prancing around all floppy while drying my hair, etc….

  • Allison January 19, 2010, 1:22 pm

I totally change in the stall!

  • Karla January 19, 2010, 1:23 pm

I don’t mind changing in the locker room if I don’t have to change undies and bra. I just don’t want those areas to be exposed. Everything else is like being in a bathing suit so no big deal.

I agree artichokes are “meaty.” I wish they weren’t so expensive!

  • Evan Thomas January 19, 2010, 1:29 pm

I feel comfortable changing in a locker room. I don’t feel comfortable when a 70 year old man feels comfortable changing in a locker room, haha

  • Michelle January 19, 2010, 1:30 pm

I did a bike tour this past summer (~400 miles in 5 days), and I was shocked when we got to the school we were camping at the first night and realized we had to use communal showers! They were packed all the time, and there was definitely no room for modesty! Back when I swam, I always changed with a towel, but after that experience, I guess I’m okay with out. You can’t exactly shower with a towel on! (And not showering is definitely not an option after 5 days on the bike!)

  • eliza January 19, 2010, 1:30 pm

gotta flaunt what ya momma gave ya 😉

    I change fast though.

  • Erin (Travel, Eat, Repeat) January 19, 2010, 1:31 pm

I used to be really uncomfortable in changing rooms but naked saunas (jimjilbang) are really popular in Korea so I got used to it pretty quick. 😉

  • Sara January 19, 2010, 1:32 pm

I guess I’m just a shy gal 🙂 I don’t mind other people doing it but typically I won’t go any less than bra and underwear…If I have to completely change then I go into a bathroom stall or shower room.

  • Morgan January 19, 2010, 1:33 pm

I’m overly comfortable. That’s what years as a competitive swimmer will do to you! I learned how to change on a pool deck in front of thousands of people and keep it all covered up!

  • Ashley January 19, 2010, 1:33 pm

I don’t change in a stall but usually try to keep somewhat covered up. The old women never seem to have a problem showing what they’ve got! 😉 Totally feel the same about the 1-piece and you’re totally making me want to start training for a tri-ath. I’ve wanted to for the past few years now!

  • Neely January 19, 2010, 1:34 pm

I gotta say, I get annoyed at people who have to change in the stall because there are only a few stalls and sometimes I gotta pee.

Be free I say! No one is really looking.

  • Hannah Hawley January 19, 2010, 1:34 pm

I shower naked and change in the open. I grew up believing (and still believe) that the naked body is a wonderful thing. I don’t have a perfect body, am currently extremely overweight, and still wonderfully comfortable in my own skin.

    • Caitlin January 19, 2010, 1:35 pm

the naked body is nothing be ashamed of, i agree 100%. i like your outlook.

  • skinnyrunner January 19, 2010, 1:35 pm

i just get naked. we’re all girls in there…. hopefully.

  • Jasmine @ Eat Move Write January 19, 2010, 1:36 pm

I have no problem changing in the locker room. Although, I’m not one of those crazy people drying their hair naked. Has anyone else seen people do that? GAH!!!

You’re adorable in your one piece. I feel like a kid in them too, though lol.

  • Cassie @ A Very Busy Mind January 19, 2010, 1:37 pm

I’m totally cool with being nakey. My roommate and I act like we live in a nudist colony sometimes! That being said, though, I do exercise some restraint in public. I realize not EVERYONE is comfortable with it.

  • Jason @ Cant-Coach-Desire January 19, 2010, 1:38 pm

I highly recommend getting some Active Release Technique Therapy on that foot to get blood flowing to the affected tendon. Its relatively cheap and the Chiropractor can give you an analysis short of getting a MRI on that foot.

Also, any tips on being a vegetarian? I’m doing a 1 week challenge of being a veggie. Day 3 is half-way done. I don’t eat alot of meat, but I feel like my protein consumption maybe down a bit.

    • Caitlin January 19, 2010, 2:04 pm

i get a lot of my protein from nuts, beans, tofu greek yogurt, and dairy. i was surprised how much 1 serving of greek yogurt per day increased my protein consumption- which is why i have it every single day in some form! 22 g in 1 serving!

  • Jenna January 19, 2010, 1:39 pm

    Yummy lunch!

  • Courtney January 19, 2010, 1:40 pm

this summer, I had a swimming lesson at a local pool … I was too embarrassed once I got there to change, that I told them I had to go home. 🙁 Not so much body image – but skin image – I hate my skin.

  • Megan January 19, 2010, 1:48 pm

Pre-babies I was way more modest/embarassed. Post-babies, I could really care less who sees me! After whipping my boobs out to have numerous people help me learn to nurse, I pretty much forgot how to be modest. (I mean, I know how to, but don’t really care about it in locker rooms, houses, etc).

    • Megan January 19, 2010, 2:31 pm

I take that back. I stopped caring when I played college volleyball. The first away game I was shocked when everyone used the communal shower, but quickly got over that!

  • Shannon (The Daily Balance) January 19, 2010, 1:55 pm

DO NOT feel comfortable! although i kinda wish i did 😉

  • Shelly January 19, 2010, 1:56 pm

Your swimming suit is really cute! It makes me want a one-piece that I can work out in. I haven’t even tried on a one piece in years!

  • Miriam January 19, 2010, 2:03 pm

If there is someone else in the lock room while I change I will turn around to change my bra… I wont go and hide in the bathroom because someone might see some part of my anatomy… and I won’t strip all down to dress up outside then my own bedroom! Weird to say but I have a tendancy to be more prude in front of people I know… like they will judge my body… and I don’t care about strangers… strange…!

  • megan January 19, 2010, 2:04 pm

I have no problem changing in the locker room. I do it quickly, but out in the open. when getting dressed after my shower, I just try to get bra and underwear on quickly, and take my time after that 🙂

  • Lindsey @ Eat, Read, Run January 19, 2010, 2:06 pm

Sounds like your training is going great!

As far as the locker room – I change my top and then my bottom. So I’m never standing there in the buff. I also have a trick where I put my sports bra on over my regular bra and then just unhook and pull my regular bra out from underneath. Ahh the things you learn while playing high school sports. 🙂

  • Emily Eats and Exercises January 19, 2010, 2:06 pm

I do change in my gym, no problem. (Though I do admit I feel more comfortable having lost some weight.) I’m much more self conscious about my tummy than my boobs…
Having said that, I don’t usually parade around naked – but there sure are a LOT of people in the locker room that do!
There is a scale at one end of the locker room and lots of ladies walk 100% naked all the way to the scale. I usually sport a towel…

  • Fitography January 19, 2010, 2:06 pm

I also just change quickly in the locker room! What triathlon are you training for? I just did my first sprint tri this summer, and currently training for a marathon. Yikes! I love swimming though. I took a class last semester at the university I work at and that really helped my technique.

    • Caitlin January 19, 2010, 2:09 pm

I am doing the Wildman Olympic Tri in March 🙂 I am excited!

  • Haleigh January 19, 2010, 2:08 pm

I used to feel uncomfortable about changing in the gym locker rooms until I moved to Sweden. They had no closed doors!! Ah, so I had no choice.. but I got used to it and I think that it makes me more confident in a way.

  • Ashley January 19, 2010, 2:11 pm

I actually feel most comfortable in the locker room. We are all there for the same goal and I never feel like anyone is judging me. Heck, if the 70 year old grannies can, why can’t I? 🙂

  • Ashley January 19, 2010, 2:11 pm

I actually feel most comfortable in the locker room. We are all there for the same goal and I never feel like anyone is judging me. Heck, if the 70 year old grannies can, why can’t I? 🙂

  • Kiersten January 19, 2010, 2:12 pm

It’s so funny that you asked that locker room question today. I am in the middle of reading “Locker Room Diaries,” which is about women and body image (most of the research for the book was done in women’s locker rooms). I haven’t been in a locker room since high school gym class, but I know I would NOT be comfortable getting naked in front of other people. I don’t even think I’d be comfortable being in my underwear. I’d definitely be one of those people covering up with a towel or changing in the bathroom stalls. I never realized until reading this book how many women actually DO walk around locker rooms naked.

  • Anna January 19, 2010, 2:15 pm

It’s funny – growing up swimming I have no problem changing in a swimming locker room, but in a gym locker room I am more conservative and try to stay covered up more. I think because with swimming you’re all gonna shower off and it just doesn’t matter. So I think if I was using the same locker room for both… I’d probably be more modest. I think it also has to do with the people around me. Gyms make me more self conscious, swimmers don’t – they seem to embrace all shapes and sizes a bit more. *shrugs* I know it’s me either way, but it really does depend on the environment.

  • Alison January 19, 2010, 2:17 pm

I don’t mind changing out in the open, but I use a towel to cover up a little. I’m not comfortable enough to let it all hang out. I used to belong to a YMCA with a pool and the old ladies who changed after water aerobics had some seriously disturbing bodies. They weren’t ashamed to bare all, and while I applaud their body confidence, it was still slightly disturbing to the rest of us. What I don’t get is why some ladies put their make up on and do their hair completely naked in the locker rooms. Why?!?

    • Caitlin January 19, 2010, 2:18 pm

hahaha i think some people get a secret kick out of being naked in ‘public’! thats my only explanation.

  • Angela (Oh She Glows) January 19, 2010, 2:24 pm

im comfortable with being naked, but I don’t parade around the gym naked. lol. A happy medium perhaps!

died laughing @ ‘One piece bathing suits make me feel either 1) really hardcore or 2) 5 years old, depending on my mood).’

  • Amber from Girl with the Red Hair January 19, 2010, 2:26 pm

I’m a member of the Y and I will shower naked – usually in the corner shower kind of facing the wall haha. And I will then change into my stuff and get ready. I’ll kind of use a towel to cover myself while I’m changing. I know what Allison means about how the older ladies bare all – they do that at my Y too. I figure it’s because they’re old and just don’t care anymore!

  • Orla January 19, 2010, 2:34 pm

hiding all the way. one time at my last gym there was a lady who stood bollock naked in front of the full length mirror watching herself rub lotion all over herself. And then she took a seat in front of the mirror and blowdried her hair, all while topless.

I used to work in a gym and we had to do a walk-through of both the ladies and gents changing rooms after it was closed. There’d inevitably be some stragglers in the gents so we just kept the head down and shut the lockers etc. It was normally uneventful until I walked in on a middle aged man drying his hair….the hair that’s NOT on your head!! I DIED!

  • Carolina John January 19, 2010, 2:43 pm

I do feel completely comfortable getting naked in locker rooms. it even has group showers (not in stalls) so i take advantage of that too.

keep swimming, you will come to fully appreciate it. don’t you just feel like you have to scarf down food after swimming? it makes me so hungry!

  • Carolina John January 19, 2010, 2:50 pm

btw, when you do two sports in the same workout we (tri folks – yes i’m including you now) call that a brick workout, not a 2-a-day. just last wednesday I did a 1 mile swim over lunch, then after work I did a 10 mile bike/5 mile run brick. that’s a hefty double workout day. actually I did some strength training before work that day making it a triple. Thursday ended up being a rest day…. still call it a brick. it’s tri-tastic!

I didn’t have a problem with changing in front of people in school but I’m not sure how I would feel about it in front of strangers like that. My house is like a mile and a half from the gym so I don’t usually change at the gym but I use the stalls when I do change there. I honestly wasn’t even sure if you’re supposed to or even allowed to change outside of the stalls lol.

  • Marianne January 19, 2010, 3:06 pm

I’ve never been uncomfortable with getting naked in the changing rooms, but I live in Norway, where people tend to almost get a bit *too* comfortable with their nudity. I remember hiking at a cabin YEARS ago, and a friend of my mom went hiking topless. I was 13. Awkward.

    • Caitlin January 19, 2010, 3:07 pm

HAHAH why would you hike naked??? for an even tan?

    • Julie January 19, 2010, 3:16 pm

Damn, I hope she had small boobs. Hiking makes them bouncy and w/ no support…damn.

      • Marianne January 19, 2010, 4:56 pm

Yeah, I’m thinking it was because of the tan thing. But still. The lack of support is MIND-BOGGLING! Haha, not to mention the averting of eyes when talking. I’m all for hanging loose when changing – but HIKING? Too much.

  • Julie January 19, 2010, 3:17 pm

    I’m okay with it. Nobody’s looking…I hope.

  • Marissa January 19, 2010, 3:19 pm

I need to get a one piece so I can swim at the gym!!!

  • Amanda @ Cakes and Ale January 19, 2010, 3:22 pm

I’m fine with changing naked. No big deal – we’ve all got the same bits and pieces anyway! Also, it’s not like people are staring at you. I do think it’s a little weird when some women like walk around and blow their hair dry totally nude. I mean, I’m all for being naked and proud, but it’s a little disarming when I round the corner and there’s a poon in my face!

  • Darci January 19, 2010, 3:34 pm

Wow – you’ve really got some comments to this question!!

I kinda do half and half like put on my bottoms and then to the top…but am fairly comfortable, no dressing room or stall for this girl!

  • Foy Update - Cook. Garden. Write. Repeat. January 19, 2010, 3:38 pm

I heart sun dried tomatoes. I make them myself when I have too many tomatos. They are kind of an expensive food and I don’t always have the extra to slurge. Here’s the recipe I use to make Sun Dried Tomatos in the Oven:

  • Lauren January 19, 2010, 3:42 pm

I’m definitely comfortable changing in front of other women in the locker room, but I don’t feel any pressing need to stay naked for overly long. Totally second the incomprehension over why some women are compelled to dry their hair and put on makeup while naked. Doesn’t really strike me as necessary? Whatever makes you happy, I guess!

  • Amber K January 19, 2010, 3:51 pm

Hey I recognize that treadmil!! 😉 That’s the kind they have at my gym.

Hmmm…maybe that’s why I don’t like artichokes. Reminds me too much of meat! blech

(hot swimsuit btw, I ONLY wear a one-piece, love ’em!)

  • Tracey @ TropicalHappiness January 19, 2010, 3:54 pm

I’m comfortable being naked in the locker room, but change rather quickly. No reason to sit and chit chat naked when you can do it just as well dressed! LOL. Perhaps we’ll all be those old free-birds who hang out in the locker room naked when we’re in our 70s!

  • Freya @ foodfitnessandfreya.wordpress.com January 19, 2010, 3:54 pm

I’m a hider!! I hate changing in public, I get so embaressed…I don’t even like the walk from the changing rooms to the pool!! Maybe when I’m a few pounds heavier, I’ll be more proud of my body so it’ll be ok 🙂
You have an AMAZING figure btw!!

    • Caitlin January 19, 2010, 3:57 pm

Aww, Freya. Don’t be embarrassed of how you look. You are making great strides in recovering from your eating disorder and have so many things to be PROUD of!! strut around naked next time. 🙂

      • Freya @ foodfitnessandfreya.wordpress.com January 19, 2010, 4:07 pm

Thankyou!! People like you give me confidence & inspiration, so one day I WILL be the woman that everyone is embaressed by cos they’re storming about naked :p

  • Ali @ Food, Fitness, Fashion January 19, 2010, 3:57 pm

I feel totally comfortable being naked in the locker room, but I know others are uncomfortable with others being nude, so I keep it to a minimum to respect the other gym members. There are some people that take it a little to far like walking around naked and stuff like that, I am fine with nudity, but that is a little too much

  • Meg @ Be Fit Be Full January 19, 2010, 4:02 pm

I used to hide behind a towel while I change, but a few years ago I realized that I was totally comfortable in my own skin and had nothing to hide!

  • Retta @ RunRettaRun January 19, 2010, 4:04 pm

    I’m a shy chick. BOOO.

  • Amanda January 19, 2010, 4:06 pm

This is totally unrelated, but I think you should design Operation Beautiful shirts. I’d most definitely buy one to wear in my races! I’m looking for something interesting to wear in my next Half Marathon on Valentines Day 🙂

    • Caitlin January 19, 2010, 4:07 pm

any design suggestions? i would like to do tech tee’s. i have regular shirts done but i dont really promote them too much: http://operationbeautiful.com/about-2/shop/

      • Amanda January 19, 2010, 4:20 pm

I like the idea of the messages being on the back of the shirt so that people can see it and its not covered by a race bib. I think it would be neat if you made it look like a race bib on the back with an inspirational message like “We are strong! We can do this.”

Thats what I’ve been thinking about writing as an operation beautiful note to wear lately, but up until now I’ve totally chickened out.

        • Caitlin January 19, 2010, 4:30 pm

Don’t be nervous! Everytime Ive worn an OB message on my shirt at a race, TONS of people come up and say that it motivates them! And that motivates me!

  • Anna @ Newlywed, Newly Veg January 19, 2010, 4:08 pm

When I used to workout at the University I taught at, I would change in a stall– I CANNOT think of anything more awkward than running into one of my students in a topless/pantsless situation. EEK!

At our current gym, we don’t change, we just go and leave in our workout clothes. Problem solved 🙂

  • MLT January 19, 2010, 4:12 pm

Duuuude (creepy bro voice): you look great in that suit!
Haha, seriously, not to be a weirdo, but I always find it so hard to make one-pieces look good- I’m thin, but I think it’s my lack of shape? I’m not sure, but you are rocking that “hardcore” one piece- you should wear that thing on the beach!

Oh and I’m not TOO embarrassed to get naked in the locker but I’m definitely parading around, either. It’s not so much that I’m embarrassed for strange women to see my body, but more because I’m in grad school and a lot of women in my classes use the same gym and I just feel like that would be weird for them to see me totally naked.

    • Caitlin January 19, 2010, 4:36 pm

haha thank you. it is reversible, too! the black side is pretty cute and prob could be worn on the beach.

  • Anne Marie@New Weigh of Life January 19, 2010, 4:17 pm

I change behind the stall always! The sammie looks completly awesome!

  • Laura Smith January 19, 2010, 4:33 pm

I know you have had injuries in the past, and i was just wondering if you have ever had knee injuries? I went skiing (first time) on saturday and ever since then my knee has been killing me. It is right on top of the knee cap (trainer said it was tendonitis?). I was just wondering if you have ever had this plan, and if yes, how should i cut back on training (right now in marathon training mode) thanks!

    • Caitlin January 19, 2010, 4:35 pm

All of my injuries are pretty much knee related! http://www.healthytippingpoint.dreamhosters.com/2009/09/knee-pain.html that post should help you. however, a trainer really has no idea what they are talking about… they can’t xray you, they aren’t doctors… unless you are in serious pain (and then you should go to the doctor) i would recommend taking a week or so off of running. it won’t hurt your training, i promise. it’s better than not being able to do the marathon at all! take some time off and see how you feel.

  • Lisa (bakebikeblog) January 19, 2010, 4:33 pm

Hmm I definitely change behind a towel, or at least as quick as possible. There are women at my pool who WALK around the changeroom completely naked and shower wilth the door open. It seems so strange to me. It is one thing to be body confident – and another to be exhibitionistic.

  • Tay January 19, 2010, 4:57 pm

Girl – you look HARDCORE in your suit 😉 Do you wear a cap? Even more hardcore! I used to feel really awkward in locker rooms gettin down to the birthday suit, but honestly it’s fine now! I’m not comfortable walking around naked, like some of the ladies though haha.

    • Caitlin January 19, 2010, 5:05 pm

      yup! hat + goggles

  • Jayce January 19, 2010, 4:57 pm

I will change one half at a time out in the open if I must, but if a changing room is available I usually go for that. Good job with your swimming!

  • Stephanie January 19, 2010, 5:05 pm

I always try to be discreet. I don’t have any issue with seeing someone naked or vice versa in a locker room but I have a big issue with the women who almost make it a point to be totally just ‘hanging out’. I mean, I really do not want to see all that.

  • Steph January 19, 2010, 5:06 pm

I grew up dancing so for recitals we had to change very fast and I would quickly change from one outfit to the next. However, I’m very uncomfortable with myself being nude in front of anyone but me, so I’d much rather not. That sandwhich looks delicious and I love fresh strawberries!

  • bec January 19, 2010, 5:08 pm

I love 2 a days 🙂 I am pretty comfortable in locker rooms probably because I played so many sports growing up and also from rowing in uni. You spend so much time in the change rooms and in hotels with your teammates its no big deal to strip down.

  • Janna (Just Flourishing) January 19, 2010, 5:18 pm

You can definitely pull off that one piece! I hate hate hate wearing them… they are SO not flattering on me 🙂

I’m usually okay with getting undressed/dressed in change rooms. I’d rather not, but I dont HIDE.

  • Christie January 19, 2010, 5:21 pm

I change in the open most of the time but I don’t ever strip down bare. I take off the top and replace it and then the bottoms.

  • Angela (The Lady Loves to Eat) January 19, 2010, 5:42 pm

You are rockin that one piece! As far as stripping down in the locker room, I don’t go to a gym anymore but when I did I never got naked completely panties stayed on but I didn’t really care it’s all women and they’ve seen it before right?

  • Amy January 19, 2010, 6:19 pm

Wow! A lot of responses about nakedness. 🙂 I will change in a locker room, but only with the assistance of a towel. It’s really my own self doubt rather than anyone else though. Maybe I’ll change one day. Good job on your swim – keep it up.

  • Jenny January 19, 2010, 6:35 pm

I think one piece bathing suits are hardcore! 🙂

It’s not that I’m uncomfortable being naked, but I would use a stall if I changed completely. Bra and underwear I’ll change wherever.

  • Susan January 19, 2010, 6:47 pm

I let it all hang out! I used to be incredibly shy, but I can thank the older ladies at the YMCA for teaching me to come out of my shell. No shame 😉

  • Jolene (www.everydayfoodie.ca) January 19, 2010, 6:50 pm

I always change in the change rooms … always have … you never know who you could see in the change room (since I am a teacher, it would be really awkward to run into a student/ parent etc.) LOL.

  • Allison K January 19, 2010, 6:53 pm

I just change. It’s too much effort to try to go to fast or hold your towel up. I don’t walk around naked though.

One time in college I walked into the Student Rec Center locker room, and one of my professors was sitting there, naked as a jay bird grading papers next to her locker.

  • Jenny January 19, 2010, 6:55 pm

Just wondering how/what is in that sammie, do you just layer everything on the bread. If you already answered this one, I apologize, I could find it anywhere. It looked good, I thought I would try it. Thanks, Jenny

    • Caitlin January 19, 2010, 7:07 pm

Hummus, sundried tomatoes, and artichokes. The tomatoes and artichokes are canned (packed in Olive Oil), so I just take them out, rinse them and pat off the oil. I also pop them in the microwave for 30 seconds or in the wok for 5 minutes to heat them up.

  • Kelly January 19, 2010, 7:23 pm

I just change clothes. I don’t need to be in a bathroom stall but I am not going to walk around naked either. I just change and mind my own business. I actually was a member of a gym in college where this lady (an OLDER lady) would get naked and then stetch in the middle of the locker room. Now that was little overboard in my opinion!

  • Kelly January 19, 2010, 7:23 pm

    Haha, this question is popular!

I kind of change under a towel when I change at the gym. The changerooms are really big and open at the place I go swimming… there’s really nowhere to hide!

There are two things that bug me, though:
    1. It is 100% guaranteed that there will always be a lady showering fully nude in the first shower stall (which is fully visible from the rest of the changeroom), even though all the more private showers are available.
    2. The toilets will never have been flushed properly… but when I hold the flush down, it flushes fine! People are just lazy!

  • Katie O. @ Fit to Wed January 19, 2010, 7:36 pm

I always feel hardcore when I wear my one piece to the pool to get a swim in! I don’t like getting naked in the locker room. It’s just strange to me. To each their own though!

  • Jenny January 19, 2010, 8:20 pm

I hate getting naked in locker rooms! And to be honest, it makes me uncomfortable when people parade around naked like no one is watching either..needless to say I don’t spend much time in the locker rooms 😉

  • Christy January 19, 2010, 9:56 pm

Awww heart dish + cherries is sooo cute!

  • Cynthia (It All Changes) January 19, 2010, 10:24 pm

One pieces always make me feel hardcore since I wear a tankini to go for fun.

I don’t like to change in the open. I go into a stall or behind a towel. Old body image issues die hard.

  • Amanda January 19, 2010, 10:27 pm

Oh my that sandwich looks FANTASTIC!! It is now officially on my “to make” list for lunch. I bet if I press it on my mini george foreman it will be very panini-esque, yum!

  • Run Sarah January 19, 2010, 10:28 pm

I get naked but change fast! Years of swim team taught me that!

  • Jess January 19, 2010, 11:04 pm

Oh, this makes me laugh. I don’t want to judge but it all seems a bit prudish to me. I change at the pool, yoga studio and gym all the time. I’ve always noticed that Americans aren’t fans of nudity, though 🙂

  • Rosey Rebecca January 20, 2010, 8:04 am

Thanks for the artichoke sandwich idea!! I’m going to be looking to your blog a lot for vegetarian food ideas since I’m such a newbie! 🙂

  • Sarah @ See Sarah Eat January 20, 2010, 10:16 am

I’m definitely comfortable. I figure everyone else is too worried about themselves to notice me anyway 😉

  • Diana @ frontyardfoodie January 20, 2010, 11:07 am

I miss swimming from reading this!!!! I was a competitive swimmer a few years ago and adored it. It is such a good work out too!

  • Jo January 20, 2010, 11:23 am

I’m comfortable with stripping off but I change quickly and efficiently. It doesn’t bother me at all but I just don’t think it is necessary to parade round naked – I don’t think anyone really wants to see my naked body and I’m not really that keen to see anyone elses.

My friends and I are respectful of each other – we would happy change in front of each and I often share changing rooms when shopping etc but you avert your eyes at a crucial point!
