750 Meters

in All Posts

I’m happy to announce that I swam 750 meters in 25 minutes – with proper form!  Ryan was a good teacher!  It was HARD and there was a lot of hanging onto the wall in between laps.  :)  Swimming involves way more thought than running – in a race, you just run forward.  When you swim, you’re thinking about stroke, extension, breathing, turning… ugh!

But I LIKE learning a new skill.  It’s fun and challenging!

Before the swim, I did 25 minutes on the stationary bike.  My foot feels better, and I’m becoming more and more convinced my issue was some irritation of my tendon.

This afternoon, we went with Harry to his grandma’s rehabilitation home to visit.  She’s so funny and sweet.

We packed a lunch, including peanut butter and jelly sandwiches:

And an orange:

And when we got home around 5 PM, my pre-gym snack was some sort of granola bar:

Dinner was little stuffed pastas (a frozen kind) with stir-fry artichoke hearts, sundried tomato, and broccoli:

Nom, nom, nom!

And a handful of dried blueberries for dessert.

Time to catch up on all those DVRed shows!  Have a good night.

Hey Caitlin! ~ I love your blog and have been reading it for a couple of months but have not posted anything yet. I just wanted to say that the delicious pasta you are eating is tortellini. Tortellini is one of the most delectable types of pastas so I just wanted to let you know!!

    • caitlin January 16, 2010, 8:41 pm

haha i couldnt figure out how to spell it so i just described it. thanks!

i’m impressed you’re swimming. i’m such a non-swimmer–a cat, if you will. we had to swim the mile as one of our high school gym tests and i totally thought i could keep up with the swim team girls. (i could not.) i ended up dehydrated and dragged from the pool to recuperate. i hate swimming. 🙂

  • Devon January 16, 2010, 8:51 pm

You will get better at swimming and you won’t have to think about it so much. Just like running.

  • Cynthia (It All Changes) January 16, 2010, 9:12 pm

Those are tortellini and they are my favorite pasta.

Wow. I wish I enjoyed swimming. I just absolutely cannot get into it. I’ve tried so many times. Oh well. To each her own. I think my thing is pretty much the gym. Not a runner, not a swimmer.

  • Mandy @ University Cooking January 16, 2010, 9:39 pm

Love it that you cut your sammie into triangles…I used to do that in high school, and everyone made fun of me for it…whatever, it looks classier that way 🙂

  • Erin (Travel, Eat, Repeat) January 16, 2010, 9:47 pm

Way to go with the swimming! I find it to be such a difficult sport — requires so much concentration. 😉

  • Christy January 16, 2010, 9:49 pm

  • Allison January 16, 2010, 10:19 pm

Isn’t is crazy how swimming takes sooooooo much longer than running?

  • Emily Eats and Exercises January 16, 2010, 10:22 pm

Good job on the swim! Can I ask how often Ryan tells you to breathe? (Alternating sides? One side? Every three strokes?) Thanks!

    • Caitlin January 17, 2010, 8:44 am

Ryan said at this point, I just should breathe however it is comfortable for me and worry about all the other stuff (like stroke and legs) for now. However, she said that because I’m going to do a tri, it might be helpful to learn to look UP when breathing so i can see where I’m going.

I’m just breathing every 3 strokes on opposite sides for now.

  • lauren @ Eater not a runner January 16, 2010, 10:39 pm

    Good work on the swimming!

  • She-Fit January 16, 2010, 11:08 pm

I’m very impressed with the swimming. I didn’t realize how hard swimming laps was until I took a PE course last semester in college… I almost drown it was so hard 🙂

    Caitlin,

Happy to hear your swimming trial went well! Also, I noticed you were snacking on a “Cascadian Farms Sweet N Salty bar.. My hubby loves those.. I actually prefer the “Pumpkin Flax or Almond butter bars they make.. Cascadian Farms always seem to sell the most delish organic products… mmmmmm

  • Amber K January 17, 2010, 1:01 am

I know this has nothing to do with this particular blog post, but I made pumpkin yogurt for the first time today.

I guess something finally clicked since you’ve been talking about it for so long! The only thing I left out was agave nectar because I didn’t have any. But I have to say, YUM! My husband even liked it and he always turns his nose up at “healthy” food. lol

    • Caitlin January 17, 2010, 8:44 am

      It is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO good.

  • Heather @ The Joyful Kitchen January 17, 2010, 1:03 am

  • Nicci January 17, 2010, 2:39 am

  • Freya @ foodfitnessandfreya.wordpress.com January 17, 2010, 4:38 am

I think swimming only feels harder cos you’re learning it; the more you do it, the more natural it’ll be, so you won’t be thinking about it anymore 🙂
LOVE your dinner – stuffed pasta is my fave dinner!

  • Sarah (Running to Slow Things Down) January 17, 2010, 7:26 am

Woohoo…congrats on the swimming! It won’t be long before you’re a real natural, I’m sure. I’d hoping to take up lessons in the summer. 😀

  • Jessica @ The Process of Healing January 17, 2010, 10:42 am

Yay congratulations on the swimming! I’m sure it must be really hard. And glad your foot is feeling better!

  • Ashley January 17, 2010, 11:36 am

My husband is in LOVE with the sweet + salty granola bars. Awesome job with the swimming. I took a swimming class in college and was amazed at how much better I got and how quickly my stamina built up. For the past few years I have reallllly wanted to do a tri. My biggest fear is the biking though!!

  • Mackattack (Beth) January 17, 2010, 11:43 am

Congrats on 750m! I was a competitive swimmer forever and taught adults how to swim, it’s a really fantastic feat to pic it up now. Great job! Can’t wait to see how triathlon training goes 🙂

  • Jenny January 17, 2010, 2:12 pm
