Legging = Pants?

in All Posts

The Husband had me shopping until I dropped tonight!  That man can SHOP!

IMG_4173

I thought I was going to lose my cool in the suit section at one point!  I am NOT one of those women who can shop for an entire day.  I begin to lose my patience with the experience by the second hour.

Before we left for shopping, I had yogurt + granola:

IMG_4147

And mid-way through our excursion, we stopped at Panera for dinner.

IMG_4151

Highly disappointed to find out that the Broccoli Cheddar soup is not vegetarian.  :(  I used to have that all the time in college and loved it so much.  However, it’s made with chicken broth – wah!  Panera should change it to vegetable broth so everyone can enjoy the cheesy goodness.

I settled for their new (to me) vegetarian sandwich, which has cilantro hummus, peppers, feta cheese, and the usual sandwich veggies stuffed inside.  It was GOOD!

And chips:

Time for bed… but first, the pivotal question of my evening:

Do leggings count as pants now?  Like, can I wear a long sweater + leggings or is that a major faux fashion move?  I can’t decide if leggings = pants.

I see a lot of girls doing the leggings and pants and while it’s not my thing, some people can really pull it off. It needs to be a long sweater though — when people wear short shirts, it just looks silly. 😀

  • Melissa December 17, 2009, 11:08 pm

hm. kinda depends on the person with the pants thing. I think you could rock it though. Anything worn with absolute confidence looks fab – just can’t be pulling on the bottom of that sweater the whole time! 😀

  • Danielle December 17, 2009, 11:09 pm

Hi, I just HAVE to chime in on your question! I think leggings are acceptable as pants. But only as dress down attire. AND no tshirts+leggings combos. It’s definitely a fine line between acceptable or not. I love your site by the way, you are very inspiring!

  • Lindsay December 17, 2009, 11:13 pm

In england alot of girls and women wear leggings, so you will fit in over there!! But I chose to keep with my american looks and stayed with jeans!!

  • Jenny December 17, 2009, 11:13 pm

as long as the major private areas are covered (aka, the vajeeeeeen) leggings totally qualify as pants!

  • Sam (Merit to the Carrot) December 17, 2009, 11:14 pm

    I agree with Jenny!

  • Jessica @ Jessica Balances December 17, 2009, 11:15 pm

In my opinion, as long as you have a rockin’ bod – which you do – go ahead and wear leggings as pants! I must agree with someone else who commented though: must wear the leggings with confidence! 🙂

  • Molly @vegandorm December 17, 2009, 11:15 pm

I think leggings are good if your top goes down to your butt. So, for example, a long sweat plus leggings plus boots would be cute. a tank top plus leggings plus flipflops, not so much.
but wear whatever makes you feel comfortable!

  • Anna @ Newlywed, Newly Veg December 17, 2009, 11:18 pm

I am wearing a long sweater and leggings right now, so I hope that everyone doesn’t say that it’s a fashion faux pas!!!

I just had a 4 hour plane ride, and while I wouldn’t rock the leggings/sweater look all the time, for traveling, it is SUPER comfy. I think as long as the leggings are pretty thick (re: NOT transparent), and as long as your shirt is long enough (re: covers your ass), you’re good to go!

  • Cait December 17, 2009, 11:19 pm

My general rule of thumb is that if the shirt you’re wearing covers your butt, leggings can be worn as pants. The issue is when people wear regular-length shirts and leggings, because then their booty is on display.

  • Laura Georgina December 17, 2009, 11:21 pm

I would usually be all for the leggings, but I have to say that after seeing a small army of leggings-clad women at the airport today, I might be done with them. They’re comfy for travel but I don’t know that I’d go further than that with them as pants. However, you could totally work them with a cute short dress and some layers (layers are so essential for dealing with the British cold!)

  • Deva (Voracious Vorilee) December 17, 2009, 11:21 pm

I am not sure on the leggings I know a lot of people who are AWESOME at pulling it off – I think you could 🙂 I haven’t tried the leggings + long sweater or sweater dress look, I prefer skinny jeans + long sweater 🙂

I love panera’s veggie sandwich, it’s so good!

  • Amanda (Two Boos Who Eat) December 17, 2009, 11:22 pm

Leggings are totally pants! You can totally rock that look!

  • Carolyn December 17, 2009, 11:24 pm

I think tunic sweater or sweater dress over leggings with dressy flats or heels and maybe a nice wide belt.

  • Bronwyn December 17, 2009, 11:24 pm

It’s totally shirt/sweater dependent. And it’s person dependent too. All about how you feel in what you’re wearing.

  • Stephanie December 17, 2009, 11:26 pm

Leggings are definitely pants! Especially here in NYC.

  • Kara (@ Kara's Marathon) December 17, 2009, 11:27 pm

ITA that it is dependent on the top you are wearing. If it hits mid-thigh, you’re probably okay, but if it barely covers the behind then I think pants are more appropriate.

You also have amazing legs, though, so you can probably wear a paper bag and look great! 🙂

  • Amanda December 17, 2009, 11:30 pm

Leggings = pants!!! My major rule is that the top has to be a tunic or long sweater that covers most or all of your butt …

  • Shannon (The Daily Balance) December 17, 2009, 11:32 pm

they definitely equal pants as long as your top covers your tush 😉

    gotta love panera!!!

  • Amy December 17, 2009, 11:32 pm

Leggings with a long fitted sweater and a cute belt with boots looks so cute on slim girls like yourself. Oh, and make sure your leggings are nice and thick, I hate seeing girls with leggings that are thin on the knees and butt – you can see right through them and it looks cheap.
So, verdict here is go leggings as pants, but cover your butt.

  • postcollegecook December 17, 2009, 11:35 pm

Have you seen the Coastie Song on Youtube? It might change your opinion on leggings as pants! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jw9ODIZj40w

  • karla December 17, 2009, 11:35 pm

I love wearing my black leggings with flat boots and a long sweater.

  • caronae December 17, 2009, 11:37 pm

I for sure think they can count as pants, but I wouldn’t wear them with a really tiny top, since they are already smller than typical pants…

  • Kathleen December 17, 2009, 11:40 pm

I always wear leggings as pants! I think as long as you are covering your giggly bits and the leggings are not sheer, you’re in the clear…one rule I use is…if the leggings have a crotch (like in pantyhose),they are tights…if not, and they’re opaque…you’re good to go for wearing them as pants 🙂

  • Katie December 17, 2009, 11:41 pm

I vote they count as pants and great pants for long plane rides..I will be rocking that tomorrow. Just as long as whatever is on top covers your bottom, it definitely works!

  • Mel December 17, 2009, 11:42 pm

As long as you’re not channeling Lindsay Lohan, I’d say you’re fine.

  • Christine December 17, 2009, 11:54 pm

I think it depends on your body type. For instance, you, could defiantly pull it off! It looks soooo cute!! But I would also say that you have to have an appropriate length shirt for sure. Just wear it with confidence! 🙂

  • Kt December 18, 2009, 12:09 am

leggings are 100% pants and are AWESOMELY comfortable

  • Amber December 18, 2009, 12:29 am

Leggings are most definitely pants! my rule of thumb is as long as your booty is covered you are good to go!

  • Tay December 18, 2009, 12:31 am

I’ve recently become obsessed with leggings. So comfy and completely acceptable now! I don’t like them worn as “jeans” – like with regular shoes/flats and a shorter shirt. But I do love them with a longer pull-over sweater or long sweater-coat and flat boots or uggs. It took me a while to feel completely comfortably walking around in skin tight, booty-huggin’ leggings, but just work it girl!

  • Katy @ These Beautiful Feet December 18, 2009, 12:31 am

As long as it goes over the booty and covers even a couple inches of leg, I think it works. You just have to make sure you do it right! 🙂

  • Melissa S. December 18, 2009, 12:44 am

i had that sandwich on my first visit to panera in houston in november! pretty good!

  • Madeleine December 18, 2009, 12:45 am

If you’re asking this question in relation to coming to England, only in doors!
I think the look itself looks fab and you could totally rock it, but if you’re choosing leggings > trousers in England and plan on wearing this look to stomp around London in the RAIN and the COLD, then.. well, no, they do not equal trousers. XD

  • BethT December 18, 2009, 12:54 am

Honey, in San Francisco ladies wear leggings with short shirts/sweaters. They like to show off the junk.

  • Sarah December 18, 2009, 1:15 am

This is an issue very close to my heart 🙂 Leggings ARE NOT pants. They are fine if you are wearing a very short dress or a longish top that def. covers you butt. But not if you are just wearing a t-shirt. In Australia at the moment, the t-shirt with leggings look is very popular with teenage girls…this pic says it all 🙂 http://blogue.us/2009/03/23/why-leggings-are-not-pants/

    • caitlin December 18, 2009, 8:50 am

HAHAHAH. ok. i will not wear white leggings.

  • Leah @ L4L December 18, 2009, 1:37 am

YES!!! Leggings ARE pants…as long as they are the thick enough kind! Some are a little see-through. I work at Nordstroms. It’s a HUGE trend right now! All the girls at work wear leggings! with tall boots, with flats, long shirts, short dresses, skirts, sweaters. You name it.

    I am addicted now:
    http://leftoversforlunch.wordpress.com/2009/11/22/two-meal-day/

    • caitlin December 18, 2009, 8:51 am

      you look cute!!!

  • Stephanie December 18, 2009, 1:44 am

I agree with what most everyone is saying – as an everyday look they are cute with a longer shirt.. however..
If you’re going out at night there is NOTHING wrong with showing off your butt! Some heeled boots of high heels with leggings are very sexy!

  • Leah @ Simply fabulous December 18, 2009, 2:29 am

Yep.. I would say leggings count as pants..
but be careful.. pants over here are underwear! 😉 So in that case, leggings do not equal underwear.

  • brittany December 18, 2009, 3:46 am

    NOOOOOOOOO

  • D December 18, 2009, 3:54 am

I wear leggings every single day! Everyone in England wears them!

  • Suzanne December 18, 2009, 4:15 am

Jumper dresses and leggings are huge here in the UK, roll with it!

  • Tessa December 18, 2009, 4:42 am

I love leggings! I wear them all the time in winter here in Aus, whether they’re worn dressed up going out clubbing or dressed down… always making sure the tops covering the butt of course:)

  • haya December 18, 2009, 5:27 am

while i do not believe that leggings = pants, i see loads of people around that do, so i don’t think it would be a fashion faux if you wanted to do that!

  • Kelly December 18, 2009, 5:58 am

I love leggings. I don’t necessarily wear them as legit pants but I wear a long sweater that covers my butt with them 🙂

  • Jen December 18, 2009, 6:01 am

I teach high school and I see the girls wear this combo all the time. High school girls are usually a little more aware of what’s popular in fashion. If fact, I see leggings with leg-warmers sometimes! Bring on the 80’s!

  • christie, honoring health December 18, 2009, 6:25 am

I was at the hair salon last night and two of the girls were wearing sweater dresses with leggings and they both looked totally cute. You should totally rock it, you have the personality to pull that sort of thing off. I think fashion and style is totally about personality anyway.

  • Angela December 18, 2009, 6:40 am

Leggings do not equal pants, but with that being said, a long sweater is totally acceptable to wear with leggings. As long as the top/dress you wear with leggings covers your behind, you are in the clear, otherwise, leggings = not pants!

  • Jessica @ How Sweet It Is December 18, 2009, 6:47 am

I think most people consider them as pants!

  • Lauren December 18, 2009, 7:00 am

Too bad the soup isn’t vegetarian because it is pretty darn good! I think the Black Bean is though, and that one is also quite awesome!

Haha, I think leggins totally count as pants, as long as you wear a longer sweater over them. Like I wouldn’t pair them with a tube top, but maybe a oversized shirt…?

I wanted to let you know that I gave you a little “shout out” to your Team in Training charity on my last post. I talked about giving and I mentioned your marathon training and the cause. I hope that’s okay and hopefully you will get some more support! 🙂

    Have a great weekend Caitlin!

    • caitlin December 18, 2009, 8:51 am

      THANK YOU!

  • Lindsay Perrone (goodiesgalore) December 18, 2009, 7:07 am

THey are totally pants. Do it up.

  • Laura December 18, 2009, 7:33 am

leggings, boots, long-ish shirt/sweater are acceptable. They aren’t a ‘pants’ substitute but a different ‘look’.

  • Karen December 18, 2009, 7:41 am

Leggings totally count as pants! (at least, they better count otherwise I am in trouble!) I live in leggings…so comfy & cute!

  • Andrea December 18, 2009, 7:45 am

Having just spent a lot of time in Great Britain…you will be an outsider if you are not wearing leggings. Given that they are more fashion forward than we are, I think it’s safe to say that leggings definitely count as pants:)

  • Julie December 18, 2009, 7:45 am

I think they do count. I don’t wear them because I am so not trendy enough and would look like a fool, but I see the cool girls wearing them all the time! Big granny panties do not count as pants, no matter what lady gaga might want you to believe.

I hate shopping too. It’s such a pain and takes way too long. I hate trying things on, getting unchaged then changed again 800 times is the worst.

  • MelissaNibbles December 18, 2009, 7:49 am

Leggings count as long as you cover your booty. I like them with boots, but not UGGS!! Uggs are not cute and they’re made for shoveling snow or going out in cold weather. Not for wearing with skirts, jeans, leggings, etc…Don’t wear leggings with Uggs please Caitlin! Promise me!

    • caitlin December 18, 2009, 8:52 am

i have a personal hatred for uggs and have never and will never wear them. ever.

      • Whitney December 18, 2009, 9:53 am

You might change your mind if you didn’t live in FL. Uggs are super cozy in the winter. I didn’t understand them when I lived in TX but man I love them in Chicago!

        • Sara December 18, 2009, 10:19 am

          Agreed.

        • Shelly December 18, 2009, 10:43 am

My only issue with Uggs and Ugg-type shoes (b/c my “Uggs” are actually Emu) from a functionality standpoint- is that they are nice and warm and waterproof, but they aren’t very supportive so they make my feet hurt!
I don’t think they’re all that cute, but I’ve definitely used them as snow boots.

    • jessica December 18, 2009, 10:58 am

Uggs are a life saver in 20 degree weather.

  • Paige (Running Around Normal) December 18, 2009, 7:57 am

Haha – that picture of you is hilarious!
I think it’s totally relative to whether leggings count as pants. I know a lot of girls hate them with a fiery passion, but I, however, really like them! When I wear them I typically where a shirt long enough to at least cover half of my booty.

  • Lindsey @ Sound Eats December 18, 2009, 7:57 am

You’re covered if your ass is covered. 🙂

  • Morgan @ Life After Bagels December 18, 2009, 7:59 am

the way you feel about shopping = ditto . . . the way your husband feels about shoppng = my boyfriend ditto . . . I despise trying things on while Brad could have a 24/7 fashion show and he’d be grinning from ear to ear . . . oh wait he does already do that, he has 4 outfits a day!!!!!!!!!

  • jewels December 18, 2009, 8:01 am

I’m in NY and LIVE in leggings…I just make sure shirt covers my butt..most of the time anyway haha

  • Natalie December 18, 2009, 8:04 am

While I have yet to embrace this fashion trend (although I want to just haven’t yet), tons of women where I live do (the Dallas area). As long as your butt is covered, you’re good!

  • Sammi December 18, 2009, 8:06 am

    Leggings + runner’s legs = pants.
As long as you keep your butt covered though lol.
I’m with you on not being able to shop for very long. My mom used to hate taking me to the mall with her because I would get so cranky! I’m not as bad about it now as I was when I was little though. If I’m alone though, I can usually shop for a long time without getting annoyed lol. (as long as I’m not trying on jeans. Jeans drive me crazy because it’s so hard to find ones that fit me correctly)

  • Allie December 18, 2009, 8:07 am

i love legging as pants. with boots and a long sweater (long but fitted close to the body or with a belt, so you can still se eyour body). sooooo comfortable and can look totally chic. ha ha- glad i’m not the only one who’s a bad shopper. i avoid malls at all costs. just thinking about the crowds makes me cranky.

  • Maura December 18, 2009, 8:21 am

I agree, I love leggings as pants. It gives you an alternative to wearing pants/skirts in the winter. The one faux-pas for me would be to wear them at work. Then again, I work at a hospital (no I can’t wear scrubs either..boo) so the rules can be different.

  • Ashley December 18, 2009, 8:28 am

I’m wearing leggings, sweater and tall flat boots right now. You can def wear them whenever you want and however you want!!

  • Kasey December 18, 2009, 8:28 am

I agree with many others… as long as the top/sweater/shirt covers your butt, leggings/tights are totally acceptable 🙂

  • Runningwriter December 18, 2009, 8:31 am

Definitely depends on the thickness of the leggings.and the length of the top. It’s definitely too cold in London at the moment to have leggings as your only layer on the bottom.
I see a lot of girls wearing leggings which fit more into the opaque tights category and it’s awkward – you feel like you have to look aware because they forget to fully dress themselves.

  • Susan December 18, 2009, 8:33 am

As long as they are thick leggings and your sweater goes past mid-thigh, I say okay. I do, however, think it’s a trend few can pull off so I find it a tad risky.
I hate shopping too! It wears me out more than a workout at the gym.

  • Anne P December 18, 2009, 8:39 am

Haha I used to rock the leggings and long shirts when I was living in Prague. Boots with the leggings are really cute and make the look more finished. Although sometimes I felt like I just forgot to put pants on 😉 The key is a long enough shirt! I totally think you can rock it.

  • Anne P December 18, 2009, 8:40 am

Oh and like someone said above – make sure they are thicker/ darker LEGGINGS. Not tights like you would wear with a dress, ha!

  • Caitlin December 18, 2009, 8:46 am

That is what I get at Panera!

No, leggings should not be worn as pants. Have you seen the Kardashian’s? They look ridic.

  • katie December 18, 2009, 8:55 am

i wear leggings as pants now! a ton of people do in college..somegirls wear them under gym shorts..some just plain.. i like to wear them with loose shirts!

  • kara December 18, 2009, 9:00 am

yes leggings totally work as pants….and can be dressed up or down very easily. a good rule of thumb if your unsure if the shirt/sweater/or dress will work with the leggings is to make sure it covers your butt! Rock it, its a fun way to change up outfits!!!

  • Diana @ frontyardfoodie December 18, 2009, 9:04 am

You can totally wear leggings as pants so long as your a$$ is covered!

I do it all the time and so does Lindsay Lohan…..that might be a bad analogy. haha

  • Allison December 18, 2009, 9:10 am

I think leggings can count as pants- I wear them at least once a week. As long as you don’t look inappropriate wearing them (and I leave that up to your own discretion) go for it!

  • Tracy December 18, 2009, 9:13 am

Ha! I’m not vegetarian, but I always order the Meddie Veggie at Panera – because it’s so good!

I think leggings are pants, but tights are not pants. So if the leggings are made out of the same material (very thin) as tights, then they do not qualify as pants (clear as mud, no?). When in doubt… don’t do it 🙂

  • Megan @ Megzz Wins At Life December 18, 2009, 9:14 am

Yes totally leggings count as pants.. People wear long sweaters and leggings all the time!

  • Jo December 18, 2009, 9:15 am

Leggings are definitely trousers (sorry I can’t say pants… it just feels wrong!!) – in fact I’m currently wearing leggings right now – I live in them. Am wearing a little silk dress and a long black cardi over the top – I agree with the others – you need to cover your butt! I have at least 15 pairs in different lengths and colours (but no white I promise!!). Go for it! You’ll see tons of girls wearing them in London!

  • Kailey (SnackFace) December 18, 2009, 9:18 am

Leggings are so pants in NYC. I’d never understood until I came here. It’s like jeans are passe!

  • Meg C. December 18, 2009, 9:19 am

leggings are only pants IF they are absolutely in no way sheer, and the shirt you’re wearing covers your whole butt.

    otherwise… not pants!

  • Sarah December 18, 2009, 9:20 am

My friend and I had this discussion the other day. We both basically agreed that leggings look best with a shirt/sweater/tunic that covers your butt/frontal area. They can also work with a more billowy tank top with a longer cardigan layered over top and accessorized with a scarf or cool necklace. Boots also help complete the look. I guess the key thing is that you should look cute and not like you’re going to the gym ; )

  • Lee December 18, 2009, 9:21 am

I think that leggings can = pants when the shirt you are wearing covers your butt.

I always wear them with a dress. They work especially well when the dress is just a tad too short.

  • Denita December 18, 2009, 9:45 am

    leggings = pants…fashionably yes.
Many people are wearing them with fleece’s – which do not cover your butt (hello tushy crack and camel toe…what are they thinking?!?) which I can’t support. But, leggings with long sweater/tunic and boots (like your black ones) are pretty darn cute/sexy/awesome right now.

  • Harriet December 18, 2009, 9:45 am

YES! leggings & a long jumper is my standard outfit.

as long as the top covers your butt you’re all goood 🙂

  • Megan December 18, 2009, 9:51 am

I second the statement that they are TOTALLY seen as an acceptable form of pants in NYC, to a werid degree. I see people w/ really nice tops, super expensive bags/boots/shoes, but leggings as pants. Seriously, if only they swapped the leggings for jeans it would be like a magazien outfit. I think its pretty adorable and comfy if done right though–i.e. follow the “fanny cover rule 101” (my mom’s rule from the 80s–seriously!)

  • Katie December 18, 2009, 9:52 am

To be honest I used to loathe leggings…but they do look totally cute with boots/long top! Not gonna lie!

    Happy Friday,

    Katie

  • Whit December 18, 2009, 10:00 am

As long as your butt is covered.

  • Caroline December 18, 2009, 10:02 am

I live in a college town and ever 3rd girl is wearing leggings as pants… being a few years out of college myself I sometimes wonder whether I’m getting too old for such trends. Might as well live it up while we can, right? I agree with Katie, boots+leggings+long top is cute for dressing up, I’m not sure about normal day to day stuff though. Not a fan of them with Uggs either, though that’s probably more then Uggs than anything else.

  • Shelly December 18, 2009, 10:45 am

I think it’s a casual look and you should definitely cover your butt, but I think you can definitely get away with it…oh and make sure the leggings aren’t shiny- I think that’s when they look the most non-pants like. I still prefer skinny jeans to leggings though. Especially in this weather- they’re just warmer!

  • Lily @ Lily's Health Pad December 18, 2009, 11:14 am

I think that they do-some wear them with more class than others! I’ve seen a lot of people wear then to work. I would have to say that is a no no.

Apparantly tights are pants now too. However, I’d say that’s a no no as well!

  • Kristen December 18, 2009, 11:17 am

I totally think leggings work as pants as long as you wear them with a shirt that is long enough. I am not a huge fan of wearing leggings with heels but love them with boots (dressy or casual) and with ballet flats or casual shoes. I basically live in leggings/tights come winter.

  • katecooks December 18, 2009, 11:46 am

hmm in california, leggings definitely = pants. i agree with the longer top part though!!! also, yoga pants (tight capri ones) = pants that can be worn with anything in CA. seriously, it’s all anyone wears LOL~!!!!

  • Annamarina (Running Tails) December 18, 2009, 11:54 am

I never would probably never have worn leggings as pants until I moved to LA. Everyone here wears them with long sweaters….so of course I joined in and now wear leggings with sweaters quite frequently! I just hope when I go home to the east coast, my friends won’t think I’m crazy. 😉

I used to debate this question with myself all the time but I have come to accept and realize that leggings can totally count as pants. 100% leggings are great pants and SO comfortable I even wear them under my jeans in the cold weather to keep me warm.

I am also the same way as you with shopping. I hate hate hate shopping. Every once in awhile its fun but after 2 hours I am done, cranky, and ready to go home.

I think they count as pants if your shirt is long enough. I saw this a while back and thought it was funny.

leggings are not pants….pants are deffo more formal! to get yourself more comfortable you can totally pair up leggings with long boots and a longish top/shirt!!

how about modelling for us?! 😀

I had no idea their broccoli cheddar soup wasn’t veg! That’s too bad! It’s so good! It’s like eating fondue with broccoli!

Funny – I had that sandwich at Panera last night, too! I was highly disappointed that not one of the soups is dairy free. My son is dairy free and wanted soup. Every one was cream of something. The sandwich was good, though!

yep, i do it all the time, it’s my go to uniform (black leggings+flats+tunic or oversize shirt. easy, comfy, and flattering. just be sure to PLAY WITH PROPORTIONS. aka the leggings are obv fitted, so wear something loose on the top, otherwise it’ll look heinous. :]

I wear leggings + skirts, or long sweaters, or long shirts w/ boots all the time. ALL the time. Even right now :).

I work with college students/at a college so it is legging central up in here. I’m okay with the trend as long as they are appropriate – and second with what everyone else has said about covering the lady parts. Personally, I don’t have the body confidence (yet) to rock some leggings unless all you saw were my kneecaps and the tops of my calves because the public is just not ready for this booty.

This website, however, is pretty hilarious:

I see tons of young women wearing leggings and tunics and with your nice slim legs you can definitely rock that look

  • Jenna December 18, 2009, 3:04 pm

i went to panera tonight as well 🙂

As long as they are thicker, true “leggings” and not TIGHTS and cover your lady parts. And definitely with a long sweater or tunic. Preferably boots, too!

I have a strict “no crotch” policy when I wear leggings. I like my junk covered if it’s going to be that close to the surface. Graphic, yes, but it must be said. I am a recent leggings convert. Jeans are just so stiff and uncomfortable.

I am Australian and 18, and love leggings. I wear proper ones (not see through) and wear them with long coats and boots or sweaters and ballet flats, or instead of tracksuit pants around the house and for running. They can be dressed up or down so easily, but the shirt must be fairly loose, and it must cover your bum.

I am quite small, and I think that you need to be fairly small to pull them off, you definately could.
Keeping in mind, correct seam free underwear must be worn, as underwear lines look terrible under leggings.

also, it can even be dressed up; sweater dresses, or a pretty (long) shirt or top with leggings and heels is very cute

Leggings can be work as pants if the shirt covers the butt.

  • Jill December 18, 2009, 7:20 pm

I wear me some leggings and boots with a long sweater or pea coat. I am pregnant–these are a lifesaver!!

  • Kelly December 18, 2009, 8:01 pm

leggings most definitely equal pants!!! 🙂

I totally hear ya on some of the soup choices at Panera. I went veggie three weeks ago (and LOVE it!) and when we went to Panera last Sunday I really wanted a bowl of soup, but I always feel so rushed to make a decision there. I do like that they have a “code” there so you know what is veggie and what isn’t. While I was deciding on what to have I noticed that their veggie soups are either a cream base (which often upset my tummy) or black bean – and I totally wasn’t feeling black bean so I ordered the french onion soup. One bite in I knew that it wasn’t vegetable broth – and I was so bummed! I was too focused on staying away from creamy soups that I momentarily forgot about the broth that is used!

Sorry this got so long, but I just wanted to share in your frustration with Panera.

Agreed butt must be covered, but still leggings are not pants so its a limited look. You should check out jeggings- look like skinny jeans and feel like leggings and black are so cute. Forever 21 has pairs for less than $20

  • Susan December 19, 2009, 12:48 pm

Leggings are only pants if your crotch and butt are covered, then it just becomes awkward. I also prefer wearing leggings with boots 🙂
