Meganerd Takes An Ice Bath

in All Posts

Please watch this until at least 1:05.  It brought on the MAJOR LOLs for me.

HAHAH she won’t sit down in it!  See why I like to run 17 miles with Megan?  She makes me laugh.  🙂

Oh, PS – I am not woman enough to take ice baths.

Oh man. I know that feeling! What I usually do is put cold water in the tub, dress warm on top, make a hot beverage and grab a magazine (like Megan did), and then once I’m in the tub, I dump the ice in. Much easier to take!

And it is FREEZING and I scream a lot in there, but it works!

  • Nicole October 30, 2009, 2:32 pm

Haha!! That brought joy to my day!

  • Diana October 30, 2009, 2:33 pm

    I could never do that!

  • K8 October 30, 2009, 2:36 pm

They work! The warm on top is the key. I treated it like a regular bath the first time, not a good idea.

  • Susan October 30, 2009, 2:42 pm

Jumping into a bathtub of ice is the LAST thing I want to do after a 30 F run!!!

Total running novice alert: How long is that torture necessary after a long run? How does it help your body?

    • caitlin October 30, 2009, 5:19 pm

15 minutes. it reduces swelling and inflammation. all professional athletes do it as well.

  • Joelle (The Pancake Girl) October 30, 2009, 2:57 pm

That is WAY too intimidating for me to try! Yikes.

  • Amy October 30, 2009, 3:04 pm

LOVE THIS!! I take ice baths the EXACT same way…except I wear some fuzzy socks, too, haha! 15 minutes and you’re done…and it feels AWESOME on tired muscles. Try it, long runners–I was skeptical too but I seriously love ice baths now!

  • Katie October 30, 2009, 3:49 pm

Hells no! That looks painful! LOL Although she does it better then I would I am not woman enough for that either! EEK cold and I live where it snows!

We have a creek that runs through our city park that they have cemented in to make “Sycamore Pool”. Its FREAKING COLD already. We get into our waist after our long runs and a good stretch. I always feel SO GOOD if I take a dip after my long runs.

  • Martha October 30, 2009, 5:23 pm

Ice baths help a TON!!! But I find it really helps me if I get into the water first and then once I’m in, I then dump all the ice in! Otherwise, its almost impossible to get yourself in there! 🙂 Good luck w/ your training! You’re going to love the marathon!

  • Jaya October 30, 2009, 5:48 pm

You cannot survive in elite sports without the ice bath! When I am in season, ice baths keep my soreness just distant enough that I can get through 2-a-days, 6 days a week! If you have to compete two days in a row, it is a must! I love Meg’s video.. I’m glad I’m not the only one who actually wears a hoodie in the ice bath and takes reading in as well. Once you get used to them, you get these sick and socially unacceptable cravings for them.. I actually look forward to one after hard training and competition. Great to read that so many other people do this!

  • maria October 30, 2009, 6:49 pm

I don’t know if I will ever be that brave. Maybe someday, but I really doubt it.

  • Cynthia (It All Changes) October 30, 2009, 8:02 pm

Excellent advice! My coworker, who just went to the gynocologist for the 1st time at 22, just got called in for a follow up due to a pre-ccancerous pap smear. I’ve been going since 16, and that may seem extreme, but it is soo important to go no matter what age! I cant imagine waiting that long, or going soo many years between! Good luck with everything. I’m sure it will be OK.

  • Susan October 31, 2009, 1:17 am

    Love it! Go ice baths!

  • Nicole of Raspberry Stethoscope October 31, 2009, 8:48 am
