Hike with the Family

in All Posts

Tonight, we went on a 40-minute hike up a huge ridge.

I really love doing active things with my family versus just sitting around or watching a movie.

Before we left, I tried to eat some dinner:

But I just picked at the lasagna, eating the some of the pasta and the veggies.  I’m actually experiencing a terrible flare-up of my stomach issues (whatever they are) so the cheese was not appealing.

My aunt and uncle came over after dinner.

They brought their pitbull, Mavis.  Mavis is seriously obsessed with my mother because she’s the one who rescued her.  My mom found Mavis on the side of the highway (someone had dumped her), and my aunt nursed her back to health.

Mavis is actually very camera shy and freaks out when you try to take her picture. :)  Look how she’s staring at me out of the side of her eye  -  LOL!

We hopped in the car and drove to Blue Ridge State Park.  On the way, I ate some almonds.

At the park, we found one of the trailheads and started to tackle the ridge.

I think we probably climb 1.5 mile or so? It took us about 40 minutes because the terrain was very steep and rocky.

When we reached the top, my auntie and mom were very proud of themselves — which they should’ve been! It was a serious climb and I was dripping with sweat at the top.

Well, I can’t decide if I’m hungry or if my stomach just hurts, but I’m going to rummage in the kitchen for a snack and see how it goes.

Tomorrow, we have a YOGA class (very excited) planned, but not much else — I’m looking forward to some relaxation.

Aww looks like you're having a great time!
Mavis is adorable! I love rescue dog stories. They might have previously had a bad time, but it's so heartwarming to hear about dogs that have been given a second chance! 🙂

I don't know what's with the bloggers and the dog pics these days, but I LOVE IT!

My brother's dog HATES having his picture taken. He actually barks and growls!

    That hike looks fun!

The names of those trails were so cool! Meditation and Dark Hollow sound so mysterious 🙂 BTW, your mom cooks a lovely dinner – now I know where you get it from!

Your mom looks like so much fun! Have a great trip.

What a beautiful hike!!! That first picture you posted was spectacular. What a gorgeous part of the country!

Sounds like a great time! I had to giggle at the name Mavis. When I was in Elementary School, I had a crazy gymnastics coach named Mavis. I remember her telling us one day that we were young and didn't need to worry about what we ate. HAH! What a jokster! Random childhood memory that I felt compelled to share! Hope you have a fantastic yoga class!

Sorry to hear about your tummy troubles. I was having the same thing this weekend too, weird! I hate when my appetite is off, I feel so out of place and not myself.

What a great hike with the family. I think that doing active things like hiking or biking or walking is so much more engaging and memorable then laying around too. Plus, now is the time of year to take advantage and get outside and enjoy the fresh air.

    Hope you feel better soon!

Mavis is adorable! My last dog, Corky, was rescued by my Dad and she used to go absolutely WILD when she would see him every few months. It's funny how animals have more of a mind than we give them credit for.

    Have fun at yoga!

Hiking is hands-down one of my favorite things to do. My family's vacations almost always revolve around outdoor activities, and we make sure to stay at places with access to awesome hiking trails.

Mavis looks so sweet… I will never EVER understand how someone could dump their pet. Awful. It's fantastic that she has a good home now 🙂

I love to hike- on days when I don't have a lot of time I go to House Mtn which is right in Knoxville.

I'm sorry your tummy is bothering you- that is the worst! If its feeling better, two fun vegatarian restaurants to try are Sunspot (on the Strip) and The Glowing Bowl (www.glowingbody.net/cafe) which is in a yoga studio, vegan with a lot of raw options and juices, and is also in the same building as the yummiest bakery, Magpies (they did my wedding cake). If you have a chance you should def check it out!

I love hiking, it's so serene, peaceful, and fun!

  • Cait (Cait's Plate) August 10, 2009, 6:40 am

I agree completely – active things with the family are so much more fun and memorable than sitting in front of a TV! 🙂

    That place looks totally amazing!

  • brandi August 10, 2009, 6:54 am

looks like you're all having a great time, and what a beautiful hike!

    mavis is too cute 🙂

those hilly roads you're running on is normal for me! maybe that's why it's taking me a while to get faster/better. there are NO completely flat roads here at all.

  • Carolina John August 10, 2009, 7:53 am

sounds like a great time in tennessee! glad you're having a fun trip.

Hey, have you ever thought your tummy problems may be related to gluten… or perhaps dairy? A really good book to read more about gluten — Dangerous Grains. You can probably get it from your local library. I've been gluten free since January and feeling much better. I also limit my dairy. (a good blog for that is Go Dairy Free).

  • seesaraheat August 11, 2009, 6:12 am

I love doing active stuff with my family too, as we've all spent too many years sitting around eating and watching tv, ugh!

    What an awesome hike!

  • elliebelle August 11, 2009, 6:57 am

That hike looks awesome! I have to laugh about Mavis looking out the side of her eye at you. My boyfriend and I have an American Staffordshire Terrier (same family as a pit bull – they are very similar) and she does the same exact thing when she is trying to be coy. I think it is so funny! 🙂
I hope the rest of your vacation is just as fun.
