Spontaneous Race Sign-Up!

in All Posts

I am BURSTING with excitement!

MossPark'09

At the blogger lunch yesterday, Ryan, Megan, and I were discussing how I like to run but cannot swim, Megan likes to bike and cannot run right now do to her hamstring injury, and Ryan is a great swimmer.  Thus, a TRIATHLON RELAY TEAM was born!

We decided to spontaneously sign up for the Moss Park Triathlon, which is happening this SUNDAY!

DSCN6842

I will be running 5.15 miles, Megan will be biking 40 km….

… and Ryan will be swimming 1.5 km!  Wow!

Of course, this means my training plan will be pushed up QUITE a bit.  My goal was to have 5.0 milers under control by July 31, but I feel ready and am confident I can handle the race on Sunday!  I had a 4.5 mile run planned for this Sunday, so 5.15 miles isn’t too much of stretch.

Super excited!

Here are my eats so far:

CIMG7082

Lunch was a platter of hummus, crackers, cucumbers, a carrot, and a pickle.

And I’m slowly snacking on a cantaloupe stuffed with Oikos yogurt and granola.

It’s ginormous!

Back to work I go! I’m so glad I have a race to look forward to now! It’s definitely going to help get me through this week.

    WOW! How exciting! 🙂

I just wanted to tell you that I have been reading your blog for the past week and a half and I am in love! Your blog was a Godsend to me! I just had my 2nd baby boy and during my pregnancy I knew that after my 6 week postpartum checkup (this was my 2nd c-section) when I was cleared for all physical activity I was going to start!!!! I haven't been very active the past 2 years since I have been either pregnant or nursing and running after my baby boy! (now 2 boys, hehe).

My whole pregnancy I knew that afterward my goal was going to be to run a 5k! So this week I am going to start the couch to 5k training plan! I also recently had a huge desire to start cycling! (see why your blog was a Godsend?? hehe, I found you just at the right time!) I am kinda stuck with the cycling because I need to get a bike so I am looking. Anyway, I live in the Phoenix area so it is SUPER hot right now! I really want to run outside but I don't think I am going to while its this hot! Will I still see similar results if I do this training program (for the 5k) on a treadmill? I really don't like running indoors but right now I think its my only option.

  • Caitlin at Healthy Tipping Point July 13, 2009, 10:28 am

melissa – congrats on your new baby and your desire to get active again! rock it out! 🙂 i trained for my first 10K entirely on a treadmill, so you can definitely do a 5k on a treadmill. just try to run a few times outside because it "feels" different. but you will gain the same amount of endurance, etc!

    good luck!

  • Melissa July 13, 2009, 10:34 am

Thanks a lot Caitlin! I am SO excited to get started! 🙂 Thanks for everything you do! Hope you have a great day!

  • Angharad July 13, 2009, 10:58 am

How exciting!! I love signing up for things spontaneously like this! It's one of the big benefits of keeping active and fit and you'll probably have way more fun than racing in something you have invested tons of time and training in. Good luck – sounds so fun!

  • BethAnn Caputo July 13, 2009, 11:28 am

Have you felt any different since you've become vegeterian? I can never just eat veggies for lunch because I feel like they don't fill me…a couple of crackers would hold me over for twenty minutes…did you start out feeling a little hungry after vegeterian meals and now they work for you? What's the difference between how you feel now and how you felt before?

  • leslie July 13, 2009, 11:30 am

so exciting! you girls will do great. you're definitely a racing addict – and i love it. 🙂

  • sloank July 13, 2009, 11:33 am

Sounds awesome!! I'm so excited for you!

  • Caitlin at Healthy Tipping Point July 13, 2009, 11:40 am

bethann – i tend to eat a smaller lunch anyway so i can eat lots of afternoon snacks, when i get bored and snacky. however, my lunch was 405 calories, although it looked small. my snack (which i ate 1.5 hours later) was about 250 calories (at least).

meals never really last me more than 3 or 4 hours, so i havent noticed a change since going veggie at all.

  • The Shabby Princess July 13, 2009, 11:41 am

    YAY!!!! How fun!!

The relay tri is an awesome idea! You guys will make a great team. I want to do a triathlon so badly, but I'd probably drown, hehe.

  • seesaraheat July 13, 2009, 12:01 pm

Blogger stars seem to be aligned this month, we share a lot of the same goals! Good for you attacking the sleep problem, I'm not even working so my lack of sleep is pretty pathetic. Also, congrats on signing up for the race, sounds fun!

  • Christy July 14, 2009, 7:57 am

Since I am not much of a swimmer either, I was so excited to find duathlons! It's like a tri but without the swim. So you run a mile, bike 9-14 miles, then run 3 miles. I love it! Especially since my husband is a swimmer so he will compete in the tri's and I will do the duathlon and we usually pass each other during the biking part. So much fun!
