So Sleepy AND So Hungry!

The Bidding War for the Healthy Living Summit Golden Ticket went WAY better than I could’ve imagined — the ticket went for $330!  The winner was the lovely NICOLE, who is a Boston resident!  Nicole, I cannot wait to meet you on August 14 and thank you again for your generous Team in Training donation

Also, mucho gracias to Mel from She Runs Brooklyn, who also made a Team in Training donation tonight! Every bit helps find the cure for blood cancers!  Thank you.

In other news — another 16-hour day under my belt.  Put me in bed.  I am tuckered out.    Here are the afternoon and evening eats:

Kashi TLC bar and yogurt:

Mini toast with PB:

Cereal around 5:30 (I just could NOT get full today), which essentially served as Part I of Dinner:

And post-second job, I had broc, black beans, and cheese around 11:00 PM (yes, really):

I have a question about your HUNGER LEVELS and working out.  Do you feel like you are hungrier the days you work out, or the days AFTER you work out?  I was starving all day (and ate to satisfy myself!), and I think it’s because of yesterday’s run.  Does that even make sense?  Funny how the body works!

I find that I'm hungrier the day after too. Although I think for me it's more that I am less hungry on days I work out rather than more hungry on the day after, if that makes sense 🙂

  • roseyrebecca July 8, 2009, 8:41 pm

I am always hungrier on days that I don't work out! Working out really controls my appetite. I feel like I overeat when I don't. Whereas, I am rarely hungry right after I work out, exactly the opposite actually. It takes me a few hours to get hungry again!

  • Danielle C. July 8, 2009, 8:49 pm

I think it makes total sense, your body wants the calories to replenish and build the muscles back up that you depleted. I always try to eat a little more protein on my rest days so that my muscles can grow/heal.

  • aron July 8, 2009, 8:53 pm

I am so hungry the day after big runs! Like today I was starving after a 10 miler yesterday… I think it just takes a day sometimes 🙂

I havent commented in a while but just wanted to say I'm still reading and you are doing amazing things right now. I was following some of your tweets tonight and seems like you are getting some crap. You are awesome and are spreading an incredible message.

Also SOO excited that you are training for a marathon!!! You will do amazing in training and cant wait to follow along 🙂

  • Kate July 8, 2009, 8:54 pm

I often find it's the day after too- which is always so confusing for me!

  • Amanda July 8, 2009, 8:55 pm

I definitely agree with you here. I tend to feel hungrier on days following a long run, especially since I run after work. It's like I go to bed not completely refueled and wake up famished! Way to listen to you body 🙂

  • Help Meghan Run July 8, 2009, 9:00 pm

Absolutely! Often right after a run (like right now, haha) I'm not as hungry as I think I should be. I want to research why this is… (And congrats on the TNT bid!)

I feel like my body is so varied – sometimes I will be super hungry after a run, but other times going to the gym takes away my appetite altogether! Also, sometimes on my off days I feel as if I have a bigger hunger/appetite, but maybe that is because I have more time on my hands?

Also, I always crack up when I see how you just put a dab of PB onto the middle of each bread slice – I am always so all about the PB that I slather it ALL over to each corner, nook and crannie!

  • just me July 8, 2009, 9:02 pm

i'm always famished within a few hours of a workout…and it continues the rest of the day…gotta give the body what it needs!

  • Joelle (The Pancake Girl) July 8, 2009, 9:07 pm

Yup, I'm usually hungrier that night and the next day of a workout. I become a bottomless pit, basically. 😉

  • Chloe (Naturally Frugal) July 8, 2009, 9:10 pm

I'm taking a great kickboxing class that leaves me starving afterwards, so I eat more for dinner that night. However, I do notice that sometimes the next day I'm also hungry and I think it's because my metabolism is kicking up.
16 hour days? You go girl!!!

  • april July 8, 2009, 9:15 pm

I'm always hungry on my rest days! it is so weird!

  • megan July 8, 2009, 9:17 pm

I'm the same– i am so much hungrier the days AFTER an intense workout. the day of the workout, i actually feel pretty nauseous, so i dont think youre alone. It's hard to harness the hunger though!

usually if i just wake up and have a larger-than-normal breakfast, it helps to balance out the rest of my day.

  • Anonymous July 8, 2009, 9:38 pm

    Hello!
I would never ask you to disclose how many cals a day you eat, but I AM curious if you'd maybe post daily protein intake over a certain period, two weeks for example? I don't see that you do alot of protein powder and I know that beans usually only have 8-10 grams/pro/serving and whole grains 3-6 grams/pro/serving? I know you get a bit from dairy, but some days it seems like you get <50 gs? It's different for everyone of course, just honestly curious, because you, lady, are one wise and sexy woman!

  • heyitstay July 8, 2009, 9:43 pm

I know many people say they aren't hungry AT ALL on long run days, but I'm ravenous allllll day! A bottomless pit! But I also notice my hunger is higher in the following days as well. Rest days – my hunger is through the roof! I think because there was no exercise to suppress my appetite.

  • tryingtobefit July 8, 2009, 11:37 pm

I think I am less hungry the days I do work out and just random days I am craving everything in the house. haha

  • ratzxfink July 9, 2009, 12:20 am

less hungry on days i work out. read an article that says certain workouts supresses hunger, like running and strength training but swimming makes you hungrier after coz of the temperature change.
i tend to be terribly hungry after a swim.

  • alex @ happy go lucky July 9, 2009, 2:37 am

i am definitely a day after person. Even after the longest of runs, I am not really interested in food, but the day after, watch out- I am on the prowl for food!

  • Caitlin at Healthy Tipping Point July 9, 2009, 3:33 am

anon – personally (especially after reading skinny bitch and in defense of food), i think americas have been falsely taught we need a lot of protein. just my opinion, im not a doctor or anything! but sure, i'll count of my protein intake for thursday and post it at the end of the day (i'll try not to eat any differently!). there's protein in more things than you think! i dont think i want to do it for two weeks though, it's just too tedious to count!

however, i used to keep a really detailed excel spreadsheet of my nutrition. i'll see if i can find it. that's when i ate meat so im sure its a litle different.

look for your answer tonight! 🙂

  • Matt July 9, 2009, 3:40 am

I am hungry everyday. Some days more than others, but it all just depends. I run almost everyday, but I eat around the same amount on off days. That's when your body is repairing so it's not uncommon to be hungrier on off days.

  • runjen July 9, 2009, 4:01 am

YES! I am always hungrier the day after a more strenuous than normal workout.
Glad to hear about the ticket. That is awesome news!

  • Lauren July 9, 2009, 4:02 am

Aww, Caitlin, that is awesome that the ticket went for over 300$! You are doing such an amazing thing and I know that you will meet your goal in no time.

And on the hunger issue, I think you are right. I run first thing in the morning, and I usually wait 2 hours after I wake up to eat breakfast, so by this time I am STARVING. But on the days I don't work out, I seem to always been hungry. Guess its just our metabolisms catching up with us.

Take care darling and have a fabulous day!

  • Peanut Butter Swirl July 9, 2009, 4:03 am

i am a total bottomless pit the days I workout. But I don't mind 🙂

  • Jess July 9, 2009, 4:17 am

I am a complete starvin' marvin the day after I run, especially if it's an evening run. I feel like I do nothing but eat the following day! You're not alone!

  • teacherwoman July 9, 2009, 4:27 am

I too, sometimes find myself hungrier the day after a hard workout. Like this morning. Yesterday I had a pretty decent run, a heavy lift session, and then an evening bike ride. I woke super hungry!

  • Danielle July 9, 2009, 4:38 am

That is GREAT that the ticket was able to help your TNT funds so much. Yea!

I think that I'm usually much hungrier the days after I work out, although sometimes it can be the same day too. I guess it's just when your body feels like it needs the nutrients 🙂

  • Kelly (Beneath It All) July 9, 2009, 4:53 am

I am definitely hungrier that day after I work out. Especially after a really hard work like our 40 mile bike ride or the 15 mile Crooms run. My tummy takes a day to process I guess?

  • HangryPants July 9, 2009, 4:58 am

Definitely the day after as well.

  • Kim July 9, 2009, 4:58 am

I seem to be hungrier on the days after I work out or my "rest" days. Like my body is recovering & needs tons of fuel to do so. I try to follow my body's lead & feed it when it asks. 😉

  • Sarah W. July 9, 2009, 5:17 am

only hungrier the day after if it included high intensity intervals 🙂

usually hungry the day of if it including 30+mins of swimming – whew!

  • Susan July 9, 2009, 5:18 am

I'm always more hungry the day after a tough workout, and expecially on my rest days. I think it's just because my body is in recovery mode, so it needs a little extra nutrition to help that process along. I just go with the hunger now and make sure I'm well fed – better for my mood and hasn't made a difference in the way my clothes fit 🙂

  • chandra July 9, 2009, 5:35 am

I'm not usually hungry for quite awhile after a hard workout but I often find myself ravenous the next day! Especially the day after long runs!

  • earthybrit July 9, 2009, 5:45 am

I tend to be a bottomless pit the day after, but sometimes I am not hungry at all and have a hard time eating. I think the weather is a major factor, but I have a pretty busy and hectic job, so I am always on the go. So my answer is on the days I workout and work, I don't really notice I am hungry, but when I am off and relaxing I am a bottom pit, does that sound weird? oh well thats how I roll.

  • maggie July 9, 2009, 5:57 am

do you use fresh broccoli or frozen??? it looks too yummy to be frozen, but you eat it all the time so I was curious if it was fresh???

  • Caitlin at Healthy Tipping Point July 9, 2009, 6:01 am

maggie – fresh. i just buy the heads of broc, chop off what i want to eat at that meal, put it in a bowl of water, and microwave for 5 minutes. viola!

  • Stacey July 9, 2009, 6:13 am

If I work out early in the morning then usually my hunger is more intense throughout the day, but if it is at night then the next day I'll be starving all day and have to constantly eat!

  • Rose July 9, 2009, 6:14 am

I'm with you on the day-after hunger thing. I think it happens to me because I work out so late in the day (around 6 or 7 p.m.).

  • The Shabby Princess July 9, 2009, 7:18 am

Yes, that totally happens to me too!

  • iowagirleats July 9, 2009, 7:50 am

Hey Caitlin – do you use your dehydrator much anymore?? I'm still thinking about making the investment, but am wondering if it's going to be worth it. Just looking to see if it worked as well as you thought it would, etc. Thanks!

  • Morgan July 9, 2009, 8:15 am

After a hard workout, I cannot get enough food into my body! I'm like a human garbage disposal!

  • Nicole July 9, 2009, 11:57 am

Thanks for staying up so late! I almost couldn't fall asleep last night after winning the golden ticket. And in yoga this morning, I was having a real tough time concentrating. So excited! To answer your question, I am always hungry (or maybe just always thinking of what to eat next). However, as soon as I eat one small thing, my stomach is triggered and then I can't stop – workout day or not. I <3 food!

  • Anonymous July 10, 2009, 9:24 am

Hey, love your site! But I just have to say… it drives me nuts that you don't spread your peanut butter over your whole slice of toast!!! 😛 lol I guess you don't mind the dry corners of your toast, but for me, that would just not work. haha.

Anyway, thanks for sharing all your healthy tips!
