Long Bike Ride!

in All Posts

According to my Metric Century/Triathlon Training Plan, today was suppose to be a rest day.  However, tomorrow is the Husband’s birthday, so I moved my long bike ride day up and tackled my longest ride to date – 23.5 miles!

I went further down the newly discovered Bike Lane and was happy to find that LOADS of cyclists use the lane for training.  In fact, I saw two "teams" training (they were intense and wore matching outfits) and maybe another 40 individuals!  It was nice to have company on this long ride because the road stretches into the swampy part of Orlando.

I e-mailed Meghann this afternoon and asked if she thought I should fuel halfway through my bike ride.  We debated about it for a while, so I packed these Sport Beans as back-up (100 calories).

I ate the beans around Mile 13, which I think was an excellent idea because by the time I got home 2 hours later, I was STARVING and very, VERY irritable. Grumpy Caitlin = Not Properly Fueled Caitlin.

  • Duration: 1 hour, 56 minutes
  • Distance: 23.5 miles
  • Calories Burned: 725 (estimate)

23.5 miles was really, really challenging.  That Metric Century (64 miles) is going to crush me.  Thank goodness I have a month or so to train!  My legs are pretty sore right now, and I need to spend some quality time with the foam roller!

I made the easier dinner I could imagine: a frozen Amy’s Kitchen Spinach Pizza.

It was delicious, and I liked that 1 pizza was 1 serving.  :)  Plus, a side of grapes.

Oh, and my mid-afternoon snacks included a Green Monster (1 cup almond breeze; 1 banana; 1 tablespoon flax; 2 cups kale).

And some Nature’s Path Optimal Slim cereal:

Times two. 🙂 It was really good; I couldn’t help it!

OK – The Office + foam roller are SCREAMIN’ my name!

Do you wear your knee sleeves when you bike? Are you feeling any strain in your knees? I think it’s awesome that you’re using your hiatus to get really into something different!!

  • Susan May 7, 2009, 8:22 pm

I can run for two hours, but I can’t imagine biking for two hours! Nice work!

  • jenngirl May 7, 2009, 8:25 pm

Congrats on accomplishing that bike ride, you’re gunna do great when race time comes 🙂

I had an Amy’s single serving pizza for dinner tonight too!! Mushroom and olive flavor!

  • lilveggiepatch May 7, 2009, 8:50 pm

I want to start using beans/gels, too, but I haven’t tried them I was about 10 and wanted to be like my dad (he bikes a lot)! Do you prefer beans to shot blocks?

Your post-dinner plan (stretching and the Office) looks just like mine…

  • Meredith May 8, 2009, 3:15 am

My husband and I love that show. Where did you find the pizza?

  • Stacey May 8, 2009, 3:39 am

Hey! I just was wondering what exactly does a foam roller help? I am a runner, that had a leg injury last week, and am wondering if I use a foam roller more often after long runs if it will help anything??

Thanks! Oh and great job on the bike ride! My boyfriend is a cyclist and I used to ride with him a lot before I started running..good luck with the training!

meredith – amy’s sent me it as a sample, but i’ve seen it in the healthy frozen foods section of my grocery store.

amanda – actually i have NOT been wearing my knee sleeves on the bike and it’s been fine. my knee sleeves really need to be replaced and since biking doesn’t bother me, i figure there’s no point in wearing them. i need to order new ones ASAP because i get to run again on MOOOOONDAY!!! 🙂

lilveggie – hmmm well in order of preference i think it’s clif shot bloks, then beans, and goo last resort. the only trouble with beans is that they are smaller then bloks and harder to hold.

stacey – here’s an article about foam rollers:

basically, the best way to eliminate and prevent muscle knots is the foam roller. its BETTER than stretching and really helps my IT band (which helps my knees). you can use it for all sorts of injuries… i definitely recommend getting one!
