A Happy Detour

in All Posts

Hello!  Around 10 AM, I started to prepare for my 30-mile bike ride by eating some fuel.  I had a whole wheat English muffin + PB.

Then, I got completely dressed (helmet on and everything), but when I went to pump my tires, I realized my pump was broken! 🙁

I asked the Husband to run with me to the bike shop and he complied… Next thing I knew, we were checking out road bikes for him!

He liked the look and feel of this Specialized bike, but I did not like the fact that it had a straight handlebar, not drop bars.  Drop bars are just so much more comfortable.

We went to several other shops before deciding that a used bike is probably our best bet.  I’m excited he’ll be joining me on long bike rides soon, though!

My broken bike pump ended up turning our afternoon into quite the adventure! By 1:30, we were absolutely starving.  Since we happened to be next to our favorite vegetarian restaurant, we stopped in.

Dandelion CommuniTea cafe is GREAT!  Everything is vegetarian and they have options to make the meals as vegan and gluten-free.

I started off with a glass of Sunshine Daydreams organic iced tea:

And although they have some much lighter options, I decided to go for a lunch with a little more caloric bang since I WILL be going on that bike ride later!

I got the whole wheat black bean quesadilla, which I just love because it’s definitely more bean than cheese.  I ate three out of the four wedges.

Plus, a side of "fake guac," which is mashed sweet peas and spices.  Yum!

OK — the road is calling my name!  See you for dinner.

What a cool restaurant! I always wish there were more healthy restaurants like that around my college campus. And having your hubby being able to come with you on bike rides soon sounds so good! Some extra company, extra conversation, and extra 1-on-1 time with the hubs! 🙂

    I love the fake guac!

    Have a great ride!

Just wondering — did you start with a lot of mileage right away with the bike, or did you have to work up to that? I’m thinking about getting into some longer rides but just curious to know how you started out. Thanks Caitlin!

Great pre-biking fuel! I so admire your ability to go with the flow of life and not get bent out of shape about minor detours. I get so irritated when things get in the way of my workouts and am trying to be better with flexibility. I hope you had a fabulous ride. It is so awesome that your husband will soon be joining you on both the bike rides and vegetarian eating!

That fake guac looks great! I should make some sometime. I wonder what spices are in it?? Yummy lunch though.. we don’t have places like that here – that I know of anyway.

I keep seeing faux guac everywhere! How does it compare to the real thing?

What a cool restaurant. Now you and your Husband can ride bikes together and eat vegetarian together!

  • Kim May 17, 2009, 1:50 pm

OMG! Where is that cute little restaurant? It is awesome to see "Celiac" friendly on a sign like that! 😉 Both my son & I have Celiac and while eating out is getting easier, it is always a challenge & slightly risky.

Hope you had a good bike ride!

Hope you have a great ride! It is raining where I am at 🙁

I miss riding with my boyfriend, when I used to, it was so much more fun because you have someone there to talk to and get you through the hard moments. Tis a good way to bond 🙂

adi – i think i started with 10 miles and worked my way up to 15. then i made a big jump to 25. i’m not sure how you would ideally increase mileage.

sarah – i dunno how fake guac compared, i cant have it because im allergic to avocado!

    kim – in orlando!
