Drop the All or Nothing

in All Posts

Evening!  Wow — there was such a great response to the 30 Day Shred Challenge.  More than 40 readers signed up for Shredders Support!  If you want to take on the challenge, too, shoot me an e-mail at seebriderun@gmail.com.  Some of you mentioned joining in the comments, but please e-mail me, too!

I worked late tonight… which typically spells disaster for my evening runs.  I wanted to go on a run AND go to Wal-Mart (for hand weight for the 30 Day Shred Challenge)… and my desire to do either was rapidly waning by 6:30.  But before I talked myself out of running, I threw on my gear and a backpack and ran to Wal-Mart!  Two birds with one stone!

Wal-Mart is only 1.25 mile away from my house, but seriously… something is better than nothing! I’m really trying to drop the "all or nothing" attitude that I have about working out, friends, money, cookies… 🙂

I ran home with the hand weights in my hands (it’s really difficult to run 1.25 miles with 3 pounds in each hand!) and some other items in my backpack.

  • Duration:  40 minutes (time includes shopping; total running distance 2.5 miles)
  • Calories Burned: 200 (estimate)

Today’s Eats

My mid-morning snack was banana and PB.

CIMG2571

Lunch was couscous (about 1.5 servings), pinto beans, sliced cucumber, broc.

CIMG2574

Mid-afternoon snack #1 was granola and yogurt.

CIMG2575

Plus two Girl Scout cookies.

CIMG2576

Mid-afternoon snack #2 was a nut mix with some raisins.

CIMG2577

After my workout, I cooked dinner.  The star ingredient was….

CIMG2579

Amy’s Minestrone soup (James is such a good model)!  I ate the soup with a side salad.

CIMG2580

And since the soup is light on cals (only 180 for the whole can), I had a piece of WW toast with pumpkin butter as well.

CIMG2581

I just realized today was completely meatless!

Have a great night!

way to run to walmart and back (with weights!)

I am too using 3 pound weights with jillian’s 30-day shred. Fun times! 🙂

BTW, I did email you … please let me know if you have further questions or what not! I hope I was able to give you some answers/information! LOL

  • redheadedjournal March 4, 2009, 6:22 pm

    Yay for going meatless 🙂

Quick question on the DVD: If I have a hand injury where I can’t hold weights, do push ups…basically put any pressure on my hand – Would I still have enough to do during the workout?

  • girlrunningaround March 4, 2009, 6:22 pm

I have a hard time getting rid of the all-or-nothing mentality too. Ugh.

Also, I emailed you about this weekend. Did you get it? A lot of times my emails get sent to a junk folder, I’m not sure why…

  • ksgoodeats March 4, 2009, 6:23 pm

James looks so happy with the Amy’s soup 🙂

Good for you on running to Wally World! I wish stores were close enough for me to run/walk/bike to!

  • Mica March 4, 2009, 6:23 pm

James looks so amused by the soup can! I’m glad he approves.

  • Hallie March 4, 2009, 6:26 pm

    Your dog is too cute!

I really need to get back into walking/jogging to places closer than 2 miles away. When you live in an area with nice weather, there’s no excuse (other than time, I guess).

Good for you for working on the all-or-nothing mentality. I’m trying to get my boyfriend do to the same. He’s usually either “2-a-day-workouts and egg whites” or “sit-on-the-couch and burritos” 🙂

  • thecleanveggie March 4, 2009, 6:27 pm

    lunch looks fabulous!
    love the broccoli 🙂

  • Caitlin at Healthy Tipping Point March 4, 2009, 6:28 pm

redheadedjournal – hmm i think you could do most of the exercises, just you would have to modify them. you could skip the push ups and do an alternative move. i’ll only done level 1 so that’s all i can speak to!

  • talieworld March 4, 2009, 6:28 pm

So awesome of you to run to walmart! I’m about to email you for the challenge now. 🙂

  • RunToFinish March 4, 2009, 6:29 pm

oh that’s called a heavy hands workout! I do them some time in training, they are good for making you feel faster when you put the weights down!

  • talesofexpansion March 4, 2009, 6:29 pm

awesome multi-tasking!! 1.25 miles x 2 ways with a load on your back (and in your hands) is DEFINITELY something!

  • VeggieGirl March 4, 2009, 6:30 pm

    I always love your eats!!

  • Bec March 4, 2009, 6:37 pm

    Your dog is adorable!

  • Brandi March 4, 2009, 6:44 pm

i still have the all or nothing sometimes, too, and it drives me crazy! it makes no sense, yet still comes up in my mind.

good job running to Walmart! something is better than nothing 🙂

  • Amy March 4, 2009, 6:47 pm

    Way to go!

I love the name James for a dog. Totally cute! 🙂

  • redheadyellowdog March 4, 2009, 6:53 pm

that was such a good idea to run to do your errand! Maybe I’ll run to walgreens this Sunday to pick up a perscription 🙂

  • Betsy March 4, 2009, 6:57 pm

That picture of your dog is too cute! And how much (poundage) were the weights you needed for the DVD?

  • RhodeyGirl/Sabrina March 4, 2009, 7:16 pm

isn’t it amazing how all of a sudden you find that you have a total no meat of any kind day! that happens to me like 5 days out of the week and i am always surprised hahahaha!

  • haya (living and learning) March 4, 2009, 7:20 pm

you’re a superstar! in the summer time, i get a lot of extra exercise just getting around on my bike (8 miles to work each way plus other trips). i don’t even notice that i’m working out.

(i confess that i thought, when i saw the picture of the dog with the can that your secret ingredient was like dog food or something. i was glad to see it was just soup! hehe)

  • healthy ashley March 4, 2009, 7:22 pm

I LOVE that you ran to Wal-Mart AND ran home with weights! That is just great!

James should make more appearances on the blog!!

About the trail run.. all intentions to do it (I actually found out about it a while ago) but then I realized it is the same day as a 5K in Tampa I already signed up for 🙁 Next time! You guys have fun!

  • bhealthier March 4, 2009, 7:50 pm

omg, james is ADORABLE so cute.

hmm I have 8 pound weights but that might be too heavy.

i will email you too and nice job on kicking hte all or nothing attitude!

  • *One Step at a Time* March 4, 2009, 8:13 pm

Okay so I absolutely love your blog and Meghann’s too! You two are too cute! I love how you run races together. So, I know that you won’t be able to run many in Florida this summer, so i have a suggestion! Come up to BOSTON and run in a race with ME! It could be so much fun! HAHA! 🙂 Just some food for thought!

  • Adi (oatonomy.com) March 4, 2009, 8:40 pm

If James ever needs a babysitter in Ottawa, I will gladly step up to the plate! 😀

  • kara March 4, 2009, 9:14 pm

oh my gosh your dog is too cute.

  • trustingmyintuition March 4, 2009, 9:23 pm

I really could take a lesson and drop the all or nothing attitude! Love the eats!

  • Marian's eats March 4, 2009, 9:33 pm

Your dog is so cute! What a perfect little model she is!

  • emily March 4, 2009, 9:40 pm

I’m really glad you mentioned the “all or nothing” idea that grips so many of us. I know that food/exercisewise that is really something I struggle with.

  • ChickPea March 4, 2009, 10:33 pm

Mm, that pumpkin butter looks fabulous!

  • Run Saraah March 4, 2009, 10:38 pm

Your dog is too adorable…my dog loves jumping into any photo I take too.

I need to buy weights for the Jillian Michael’s workout…I’ve just been using large waterbottles filled.

  • Amanda (Two Boos Who Eat) March 4, 2009, 11:53 pm

I used to run with wrist weights because it was annoying to have to carry hand weights. It was pretty cool but you look kind of silly with big puffy wrists!

Have you ever tried running with a weighted vest? I wonder what that is like.

  • Sanja March 5, 2009, 1:08 am

I don’t know if it’s just my google reader that’s doing something weird, but it said you had 53 new posts, of which 52 were news paper articles with ads. I first thought your site was hacked, but opening it, I don’t see any of those articles here… I hope there isn’t something wrong with your RSS!

  • Katy March 5, 2009, 4:37 am

My google reader did the same thing. Maybe google reader was hacked.

  • Dori March 5, 2009, 7:07 am

I’m the same way with the all of nothing attitude — great that you ran to Walmart!

Your PB and banana snack looks amazing.

So you got 3 lb weights — now I am not sure if I should get 2 or 3. I almost got 3 yesterday but then chickened out. What are your thoughts?

  • Caitlin at Healthy Tipping Point March 5, 2009, 7:10 am

dori – i was torn as well, but i kind of figured… im not going to see results if i dont push myself. also, i had a feeling by day 15 i’ll want higher weights than 2 lbs.

  • Dori March 5, 2009, 7:25 am

I just conferred with my boyfriend and he said I should get 2 lb (he knows me well, I am weak!) so I think I will do that to start and hopefully move up at some point during the challenge!

  • Leila March 5, 2009, 7:53 am

Wow, running with 3 pd weights in each hand, good on you! I once tried running with 1 pd weighted gloves (designed for running) and had to take them off half way through a 5k.

I definitely need to follow your lead with the all or nothing attitude shift as well. It’s great to see someone actually put it into action rather than just talk about it.

  • eatme_delicious March 5, 2009, 8:04 am

OMG I love that picture of your dog!! SO CUTE!

  • Jen March 5, 2009, 9:18 am

My sister had a soccer coach who made them run laps with 5 pound hand weights in their hands.

That way running on game day was easier, I guess.

  • Jennifer March 5, 2009, 10:07 am

Love your blog! I was a college althete so I def understand the importance of eating high energy, high protein, low fat/sugar goods that stick with you. also, i used to have that same cell phone…maybe it’s time for an upgrade? jk!
Hope you will check out my blog sometime too!

  • Jennifer March 5, 2009, 10:09 am

also, i think you are totes right about something being better than nothing so drop the all or nothing! great point!

  • kristine :] March 5, 2009, 5:53 pm

i did day one of the shred with 5lb weights and omg my arms were dying. im heading to target tomorrow for some 3lbs ones.. lol

  • dailygoods March 10, 2009, 4:54 am

i was a lazy bum this weekend and didn’t do the shred fri sat and sun, so i am restarting the challenge so yesterday was day 1. I was just so exhausted last night, but when I read Bhealthier’s post about how excited she was to get her shred dvd in and busted out the workout, it motivated me and I got up, shredded for a quick 20 minutes and then went to sleep. I need to realize that 20 minutes is not long and CAN be done every day for this challenge! Having so many people doing htis is giving me the extra push i need when i would usually give up!
