Cover Your Behind

in All Posts

No, I’m not talking about Britney’s outfit on GMA this morning (her behind looked great!)… I’m talking about wedding contracts (or any type of contract, for that matter).

As the planning process moved forever, I got better and better at negotiating contracts with my vendors, bargaining, and closing loopholes.  Unfortunately, I was kind of naive when we signed our first (and second most costly) contract — the photographer.

Since reading girl running around‘s blog rants about her terrible photographer (I really hope it all works out for her!), I reviewed our photographer contract to double check that we’ve covered our behinds.  Guess what?  There is no "due date" for the deliverables (like the photo CD of prints or the actual wedding album)! Instead of freaking out, I called him during my lunch break and got him to agree to issue an amended contract with deadline information.

Moral of the story: do lots of research about what should be in the contract before signing one!  I didn’t end THINK to establish a due date!

Mid-Morning Snack

Around 9:30, I had a bowl of Grape Nuts

Lunch

And lunch was a simple meal that definitely satisfied me!  I had 1 cup brown rice, steamed asparagus, and chicken with chili pepper seasonings.

Do you have any wedding contract horror stories? What about wedding horror stories in general? Because, you know, I love to totally freak myself out.  And maybe I can learn from others’ experiences! 🙂

WOww..i just read some of her dramz..that completely sucks- and the worst part is that they are withholding something that is more meaningful and valuable to her and her family than to anyone else, and it comes down to that more than money or anything..too bad all the bloggers can’t show them what’s up! Good luck with all of your stuff!

  • VeggieGirl December 2, 2008, 11:15 am

    Great information and eats!!

  • Marissa December 2, 2008, 11:17 am

The night before my wedding I spent 5 hrs in the ER. Long story short I fell and cut the main nerve in my left hand. I had surgery once I got back from my honeymoon (they took a nerve from my arm and used it as a graft in my wrist. What a nightmare! I’m having another surgery this month or sometime in 2009.

  • K December 2, 2008, 11:17 am

No horror stories from me but good thing you caught that early!

  • Mica December 2, 2008, 11:21 am

Your post freaked ME out–I had no idea so much was involved in wedding planning! I don’t know how you do it, lady! Thanks for the advice; I guess I’ll be utilizing it eventually…probably?

  • Elsa December 2, 2008, 11:23 am

Smart Caitlin! We had a nightmare with our photographer after the wedding. Took us 4 months to look at the proofs ONLINE. Another 6 months to get the pictures we ordered as part of our package (so that makes it 10 months from our wedding), then a year and a half to get our album. Our photographer was avoiding our calls to during all of this. Oh and to top it all off, there was a picture added to our album that wasn’t even US! After a year and a half of all the drama my husband and I just laughed it off. We were just happy to be done with him!

  • Caitlin (see bride run) December 2, 2008, 11:25 am

marissa – OMG worst nightmare EVER!

elsa – are you serious? did you file a compliant with the BBB? cause i would’ve (after i got the pictures)

mica – it’s only this intense if you have a big wedding. i’ll take a picture of my wedding folder one day – it’s filled with vendors contracts etc. its nutso.

Hello! I am an avid reader (read: lurker) of yours, and you’ve totally inspired me to start a food journal blog. It really is eye opening! Especially when I look at your food and realize there is no way I can be that healthy!
Anyhow, I love your wedding articles, you make the planning look easy.

  • Caitlin (see bride run) December 2, 2008, 11:38 am

k – i cant wait to read it!!! yay!!

  • Marissa December 2, 2008, 11:39 am

I know! I got my wedding pictures 2 days later and reception pictures 2 weeks later (we had a destination wedding so the reception was a week after the wedding)

Good call looking over your contract now!

  • girlrunningaround December 2, 2008, 11:44 am

Thanks for the shout out. Too bad it wasn’t for a positive reason!

My advice to all brides out there: 1) Always put EVERYTHING in writing with your vendors; and 2)Don’t pay in full until you get the product!

Unfortunately we have already paid our photographers in full which leaves us with no leverage against them. Like Carolinebee said, they photos are much more valuable to me than they are to them. I don’t my money back, I want my pictures!

  • Halie December 2, 2008, 11:49 am

Good for you for calling the photographer up and renegotiating a deadline – way to cover your bases. And very good advice in general!

I can’t think of any horror stories from my wedding – I am happy to say it was pretty drama free (except when the local party supply store came to pick up the chairs the next day, and it was just my mom there – he freaked out on my mom because a wheel broke off the chair cart. So she called my uncle drying and so my uncle came and freaked out on the chair guy, the chair guy called the police on my uncle, and the officer that happened to come was friends with my mom, so the chair guy was the one that got in trouble – so not really a contract thing, just a bad experience for my sweet mom with the chair delivery/pick up guy)

  • Halie December 2, 2008, 11:50 am

**I meant to say that my mom called CRYING to my uncle, not DRYING 😛

  • Betsy in Pittsburgh December 2, 2008, 11:59 am

I have to ask about your Pittsburgh connection. Did you go to school at Pitt? I’ve been living here for about 2 and half years and I love it… (my bf is a senior at Pitt)

And did you ever run when you were here? They’re bringing back the Pittsburgh marathon this spring which should be exciting.

Not really a horror story but my photographer made me more stressed tham calm which is a BIG no-no for anyone working with a bride. The first thing she does when I walked out of the bathroom all dressed up was to make a comment about my makeup. Then she did not bring her own directions to the church and had the limo driver pull over and wait for her every few minutes. Then she basically followed me around the whole night saying “We need a picture with your grandmother, we need one with your aunt, we need one with your brother” etc etc every five seconds. When she was ready to go I was ecstatic.

  • Katie December 2, 2008, 12:54 pm

My dad is bi-polar and had threatened not to show up and walk me down the aisle but since he behaved very well at rehearsal it never crossed my mind at all on my wedding day and he walked me down without a hitch. Come to find out, that he didn’t arrive at the church until 1:55 (wedding at 2) and my mom had to go home (1 mile from church thank God!) and get him out of bed!! My sisters and friends knew what was going on but worked hard to keep me distracted and in the dark because they knew I would freak!

  • Allison December 2, 2008, 12:56 pm

my horror story isn’t about my contract, but the quality of my photos!
Every photo in my photog’s portfolio was good, and I even had some friends who used her, and their pics were great. Mine.were.terrible. seriously. Shadows in people’s faces, and blurry pics, and shots that looked they could have been taken with a 35mm point and shoot.
Also, there were no pictures of just me. Being as it was my wedding day, I was caught up in the moment and it never dawned on me that we didn’t do any solo pics of me, she just “forgot.”
I guess the biggest bummer is that I felt like I had done my homework, looked at her portfolio and even with the good rec. from my friend…but yeah. It was dissapointing. Luckily our videographer was great..so that totally made up for the lack of great photos.

  • Kyle and Darci December 2, 2008, 1:00 pm

the place where me & my girls were supposed to get our hair & nails done (a spa type place that we knew the owner) closed two weeks before my wedding!!! so how hard do you think it was to find a place that was could get 8+ girls in for hair & nails in one morning!! Not too many….luckily it all worked out…but I was stress-ing for a while!! Hope that doesn't happen to you!!

  • thehealthyhostess.com December 2, 2008, 1:06 pm

No wedding horror stories from me Caitlin! I have only wonderful things to report and I am sure you will too! Tons of great stories though, the mass chaos, the hookups, you know! I am so excited for you!!

  • Tami December 2, 2008, 1:08 pm

we had lots of little problems with the place were our wedding was. we had to stay on top of them with EVERYTHING, every little detail. it was a pain but my husband was so good about it. he deals with contracts at work all the time so it wasn’t an issue.

  • Rachel December 2, 2008, 1:27 pm

Did you get tickets to the Britney concert? I got up super early this morning so I could get them…they are already selling for thousands on ebay. Craziness!

  • Meg December 2, 2008, 1:30 pm

Lunch looks delicious! No horror stories here…very thankful for that!

  • Leah December 2, 2008, 1:37 pm

What is the nutritional info like on the grape nuts? What is your serving size? It’s hard to tell from the picture.

  • Caitlin (see bride run) December 2, 2008, 1:50 pm

rachel – yes! i just bought them!

    leah – its about 200 calories for a 1/2 cup. i have prob about 1/2 – 3/4 cup.

  • therunningaddict December 2, 2008, 1:53 pm

In regard to Britney – I LOVE her music! I have been a fan since I can speak English basically! I love “If you seek Amy” on her new CD!

I was a Bridesmaid in my friend’s wedding and the Pastor told the Photographer the day of the wedding that he was not able to take pictures during the ceremony in the church. This was never discussed before. They fought in front of all the guests and the Best Man had to step in to calm the situation. In the end the Pastor allowed the photographer a point where he was able to take pictures(mostly in the back). The pictures turned out ok, just not the best.

  • Oh She Glows December 2, 2008, 2:09 pm

Its so true that you have ot be careful with everything these days…

Eric and I looked at over 30 photographers before choosing ours…and you would be amazed at how many didn’t have a ‘due date’, who wouldnt give us ALL images taken that day (this was one of our requirements, or who wouldn’t guarantee a certain number of photos (its nice to have an idea how many you will have per hour of service!).

Glad you were able to ammend it all!

No disasters from me! I have a funny story though…I was a bridesmaid in a wedding at a nice hotel in Vegas. I’m sure the pastor does about 10 ceremonies a day and he sounded very “rehearsed.” There was a point where he actually said, “Marriage is filled with many times of joy and sorrow…but don’t worry, because I just saved a ton of money on my car insurance by switching to Geiko!” No joke! That pastor said that during the ceremony! Everyone was shocked and silent, and it took a minute to register what he said. Then, there was the awkward laugh of the crowd and the ceremony continued. So weird!

well, i’m a single gal, so no stories of mine. But I stumbled on a new blog today…and …horror of horrors, my heart goes out to this girl.

My bridesmaids dresses were all ordered, all the girls were fitted, and all paid up. When the dresses were supposed to come in I called to check on them. Evidentally the dresses were never ordered because they didn’t make them in the color that I wanted…they “forgot” to call and tell me. Yeah, it was not a good situation. It eventually worked itself out. I hope you have your girls dresses…haha…j/k!

  • Elina December 2, 2008, 3:19 pm

I had the worst wedding planner ever!!! We hired her because I was very busy with work and thought that I didn’t know anything about wedding planning, so since I wanted my wedding to be perfect we interviewed 3 girls and I thought I had a good vibe with one of them. Yeah, she was a complete nightmare!! Luckily, I learned a lot about planning (because she was not only not helping, but actually making things worse and I had to double check everything she did anyways) and realized that I can do better without her. So I fired her! Unfortunately we lost our deposit, but we still saved a bunch of $$ by not paying her entire fee + seriously I was so relieved to get rid of her that wedding planning seemed like a breeze after that. Ok, that was long 😀

You seem to be totally on top of things. Don’t stress out!! Your wedding will be beautiful, I’m sure!

  • Bridget December 2, 2008, 3:24 pm

Oh my… I did not have a solid contract with my photographer and I wish I had… Before I had my final pics and album, the photographer went into long-term healthcare and spent all the money from his photography business. So he left us with no final products and we had already paid for everything! Luckily another photographer stepped in to ‘handle his business’ and has really saved the day. We’ll still end up paying MORE for the album because the photog usually sends money with the album when it goes to the lab for final printing, but at least we’ll have it!

He had been photographing weddings for 40 years, which I thought of as “experienced” not as “old and sick”. We might pursue this through the BBB or small claims court, depending on how much extra it will cost us. We’ve been married for over 14 months and still no “official” pictures 🙁

  • RunToFinish December 2, 2008, 3:37 pm

weddings can be so crazy. It was pretty horrible at the time, but boy what a story now. I think we will renew our vows somewhere tropical in a few years… or maybe go back to Italy!!

Ok just saw the sandwich pic and now I am starving!

  • HangryPants December 2, 2008, 3:41 pm

way to be an educated bride!

  • Nicole (anotheronebitesthecrust.wordpress.com) December 2, 2008, 3:51 pm

Glad you got that settled!! I don’t have any horror stories because well, I am not married.

  • Erin of Care to Eat December 2, 2008, 4:16 pm

It’s not really a horror story, but I just couldn’t believe how nasty people were about our “no kids” policy. Please.
I guess I do have one horror story – oh lord, I can’t believe I’m admitting this, but I lost my engagement ring IN OUR HOTEL ROOM the day after we got married! Good thing that baby was insured! It turned up three months later – it was INSIDE THE KLEENEX BOX.

  • magpie December 2, 2008, 5:45 pm

Not married yet, but I’m SO glad to hear all about the process and everything that you have to do! I will be sure to be careful when the time comes 🙂

  • imadedinner December 2, 2008, 5:45 pm

Thanks for the advice on the photographer… I’m going to call mine tomorrow and make sure there’s a deadline put in our contract!

    Great eats too, btw 🙂

  • Anonymous December 2, 2008, 8:02 pm

man i am totally freaked about her story (poor thing). the problem is that if you hire a quality vendor they will probably request full payment before or on the day of the wedding. it is standard contract for them.

my only nightmare so far has been that the hotel catering manager keeps quiting or getting fired, but THE HOTEL NEVER TELLS US. so here i am emailing one person after another and meanwhile i have no responses for weeks. so annoying, but the venue is perfect for us (huge wedding) and is where we met so we are dealing for now. makes me want a DOC but then again i don’t want to shell out more $$ just bc someone else isn’t doing his job, you know?
