Working Hard

in All Posts

Afternoon! My mid-morning snack was… you guessed it… yogurt + cereal!  I’ve given up on trying to avoid this snack — after all, it IS my favorite, and I’m just trying to portion-control it.

Lunch was simple as well – I started things off with a sweet pear.

And the main dish was a cheese + chicken sammie.

Cut into fours to prevent me from eating it in one swoop.

New Job Announcement!

I’ve decided to take a part-time holiday position. 🙂 Since we’re having an outrageously expensive wedding and paying for 1/2 of it ourselves, we could use the extra cash.  I’ll be working as a kennel assistant at a delux doggie boarding camp!  Basically, I get to play with puppies, give them baths, and pick up poop. :)

I’m pretty excited! My first day is next Wednesday.  So far I’m just signed up over the Thanksgiving holiday, because I doubt I’ll be able to do it over Christmas (my wedding is the 3rd).

I’ve ALWAYS worked more than one job, so the last year has been kind of strange for me because I’ve just been doing my full-time job.  In college, I was a bartender, freelance writer, peer advisor at my college’s career center, and a sexual assault peer counselor…. all at once!  It was nutso, but it was also pretty fun.

With the economy in the horrible shape that it is, are you doing any part-time work over the holidays?

I am moving to another state over the holidays, so I will be spending money I don’t have!! Ahhh! I will be looking for a part-time job in January, while going to school (again) full-time.

  • Erica November 20, 2008, 10:47 am

That is such a fun job! I am so use to cleaning up Frank’s poop that it doesn’t even phase me any more! I’m always sort of on double duty. I have my full time job and then group fitness classes

  • VeggieGirl November 20, 2008, 10:48 am

    Classic snack!

Wow, your part-time holiday position sounds like it’ll be a BLAST!!!

  • Halie November 20, 2008, 10:53 am

I would love to work with puppies all day!

A Costco is being built across the street from my house so I’m thinking of being a “Box-Girl” on the weekends 🙂 but it’s not a holiday thing, it’s just an extra money in general thing 🙂

  • Lacey Nicole November 20, 2008, 10:54 am

I’ve also always worked more than one job! In college I had like 5 ongoing. ANDDDD one of the best ones was working at a doggie daycare + kennel!!!! loved playing with them all and they had sweeet pooper-scoopers so that wasn’t even a chore 🙂

in addition to my full time job now i will work an evening and/or a weekend morning as a tutor for a little boy with autism. he’s 6 now and i started with him when he was 4!!!

  • Sharney November 20, 2008, 10:55 am

    Hi Caitlin,
Congrats on the part-time job! Although it’s work, it still sounds fun! Who wouldn’t love to hang out a play with puppies?! 🙂
I hope this job helps you out financially- it definitely is tough out there right now and I’m wondering how I’m going to be able to afford Christmas gifts 🙁
Weddings are sooo expensive, so every little bit helps, right?!

Congratulations and have a great day!

    P.S. Food looks yummy!

  • Bridget November 20, 2008, 11:02 am

Congrats on the job! That sounds like a pretty fun way to earn some extra money!

I’m starting a new job soon, which is a promotion and raise (yay!), but we’re moving to a new state, so my husband may be unemployed for a while (yikes!).

  • Mica November 20, 2008, 11:06 am

That sounds like a great job for such a good doggy-owner, though hopefully Maggie won’t get jealous 🙂

  • Oh She Glows November 20, 2008, 11:06 am

I worked about 20-25 hours a week throughout both my undergraduate and graduate degrees. It was tough but definitely worth it! The less loans the better 🙂
Your part time job sounds fun!!!

  • Toni Jo November 20, 2008, 11:24 am

I am! Working retail part-time. It’s fun around Christmas-time and it helps!!

  • Tina November 20, 2008, 11:25 am

Hi! So sorry that I missed your comment! My veil had a little comb on it that I stuck under my bun. We used a copy of bobby pins to hold it in place. My veil was from David’s Bridal– I think it was $20.

  • Katie November 20, 2008, 11:37 am

Congrats on your job! It sounds so fun!

I’m going to try to get back to the restaurant I usually work at over the summer… I hear restaurants are being hit pretty hard, too, though.

  • Meghann November 20, 2008, 11:37 am

haha at first I was like why is she commenting about fried oreos?, then I remembered I was just drooling over that dish when I read the menu yesterday! Can’t wait!

  • seeleelive (for the love of peanut butter) November 20, 2008, 11:41 am

CONGRATS ON THE JOB!!! That’s awesome. You have such a great attitude about it, too!! I want to get a job at a clothing store over winter break. You also brought up a good point that has been on my mind lately..working in college. I want to be a peer editor, too. I just might wait a year until I am fully adjusted before i apply for a paying job here in college.

  • Just Me November 20, 2008, 12:22 pm

Yep I got my Holiday job back in September working for a dish company doing tech support 13.75 an hour cant be beat for talking on the phone 20 hours or so a week… I think i just might keep this longer than christmas, its fun.

  • Leah November 20, 2008, 12:25 pm

I’m a Teacher full time Mon- Fri (I teach grade 6) and I also work in a restaurant as a waitress most weekends and sometimes 1-2 nights during the week. It’s a lot of work and I complain about it quite often lol but it’s going to help pay for my wedding!

  • lauren November 20, 2008, 12:47 pm

your new job sounds awesome! that is my DREAM to do something with dogs. I hope to pick up dog walking at some point in the future!

  • carolinebee November 20, 2008, 12:52 pm

what a FUN job, especially for a dog lover! It’s so hard to find a job right now, but maybe with holiday shopping things will pick up! Yours is especially cool because people still have dogs, no matter how the economy is doing 😀

  • magpie November 20, 2008, 12:53 pm

I’m not planning on doing any part time work, but if I got an offer I probably would! I wish I got paid more for blogging 😛

  • ashley (sweet and natural) November 20, 2008, 1:01 pm

A job with puppies – LOVE it! I have been known to work over 60 hours a week with my job, so no time for another! Though it would be great to have something fun on the side…or just not work 60 hours week?

  • tfh November 20, 2008, 1:29 pm

Congratulations on the holiday job! They’re very competitive this year.

I used to work multiple jobs and go to school full-time. Unlike you, I do NOT thrive on such a schedule. Since you do, why not take an advantage of it? (Although I hope your doggies won’t get too jealous smelling all the other doggies on you!)

  • Nicole (anotheronebitesthecrust.wordpress.com) November 20, 2008, 2:21 pm

    What a cool holiday job!!!

  • greendogwine November 20, 2008, 3:24 pm

    MM that sandwich looks fabulous!

It sounds like we work the same – I’ve almost always held two jobs – this is the first year I haven’t!

I work full time at American Greetings, but when I need extra money – I usually pick up hours waitressing at the same yacht club that I’ve worked for 8 years! You’ll have to take pics of all the cute pups!

  • Chic Runner November 20, 2008, 3:29 pm

Fun job1 🙂 I don’t have time to take on another job right now, but hats off to you especially with the wedding coming up!

Good tip on cutting up the sandwich into 4s.

  • Jen November 20, 2008, 3:37 pm

Yay for getting paid to take care of doggies! ^_^ When I was in school, I worked in an upscale spa/salon during the holidays and it was so much fun!

  • Betsy in Pittsburgh November 20, 2008, 3:39 pm

In addition to working a full time job at an arts center I also teach there at night, and I’m trying to do as many winter workshops as possible – so I’m “at the office” A LOT!

  • matt November 20, 2008, 4:25 pm

awesome on the job! even though its only temporary, money is money right?

good luck with the upcoming 10k!

  • Meghann November 20, 2008, 4:50 pm

Awesome about the job- that sounds like it would be so fun and rewarding!! I won’t be doing any part time work, but I just started my first full-time job in August and my savings plan is having a hard time getting off the ground! So I will definitely be living on a budget for the holidays!

  • Justine November 20, 2008, 4:53 pm

Playing with puppies sounds like a fun job! 🙂 Hopefully your pups won’t get jealous 😉

I’m not planning on getting a second job…I’ll be home for the holidays anyway, so I don’t think I’d have the time!

  • ksgoodeats November 20, 2008, 5:30 pm

I am so jealous of your job! I would LOVE to play with puppies all day. Great eats as usual 😀

  • Meg November 20, 2008, 5:34 pm

Love your new job! I bet you wil have lots of fun stories to share!

  • B_Hlthy November 20, 2008, 5:35 pm

Did you ever launch that business with the FH you were talking about? I was looking foward to buying supplements!!

  • Trojan November 20, 2008, 6:38 pm

That was my very first job when I was 13…working in a kennel and halping with the dogs/cats. My mom was a trainer there so it wasn’t “slave Labor” haha

You will enjoy it but get extra clothing rollers to collect all the dog hair:)

I ALWAYS have more than one job as well.

  • Caitlin (see bride run) November 20, 2008, 7:24 pm

hey! the holistic supplement website is launched, but we want to wait until all the bugs relating to payments and shipping are worked out before sharing it with the blog world! i want it to be PERFECT for you guys. thanks for remembering!!! i will let you know for sure.

  • Sarah November 21, 2008, 6:18 am
