Because I get hangovers! I was laying in bed last night at 11 PM with a HANGOVER!  Aren’t hangovers suppose to wait until AFTER you try to sleep it off?

I used to be a big drinker (not a coincidence that this coincided with my heavier days).  I drank probably 4 – 5 days out of the week when I was in college, and I ALWAYS had more than "a few."  I don’t know what your college is/was like, but mine was a pretty big party school and it was just the thing to do. So I did it.

I graduated in 4 years with an A average and a double major, so I don’t academically regret my partying ways (although I could’ve and should’ve majored in something more challenging and thus more lucrative).  But, truthfully, I can’t understand how I could LIVE with a 24/7 hangover.  I never really thought about what it was doing to my body in the long-term.  And I’m sure I  severely embarrassed myself more than once. 🙂

Once I moved away from college, I realized that I’d never lose the weight if I maintained my drinking habits.  Plus, I hated hangovers to the point that I stopped drinking large quantities with any sort of regularity.  Thanks to the wonders of blogging, I know the last time I had more than 2 drinks in 1 night was October 17.

Anywho, this is my long-winded way of saying, that two glasses of wine made me WAY too hungover this AM to go for my planned 6.0 miler.  The sun was shining brightly when I walked my dogs around 7 AM, and I was immediately hit by a pain of regret.  Oh well! I will get in a dark run tonight and two sunshiney runs this weekend. 🙂

I did treat myself to a wonderful bowl of oatmeal, topping with Trader Joe’s Pecan Praline Granola (courtesy of Melissa from Trying to Heal! She sent it to me all the way from California).

I portioned out 1/4 cup of Pecan Praline Granola— it’s pretty calorie dense!

It was a delicious way to mend my tummy and brain for FRIDAY!!!

I kind of feel like its all "downhill" to the wedding after today!

  • Next week:  2 day work week at full-time job (Thanksgiving)
  • Week of December 1: 4 day work week, go to NYC for Bacholerette Party
  • Week of December 8: Regular 5 day work week
  • Week of December 15: Last week of work!

(Due to some forced holiday time off by my company, I end up having FOUR straight weeks off around the wedding/honeymoon. YAYYYYY!!!)

Oh yea… I drank a big cup of coffee to mend my headache. 🙂

What’s your alcohol consumption like? How do you fit it into your healthy lifestyle? NORMALLY, I only have 1 glass of wine or 1 beer about once a week.  :)  I would never completely abstain because I definitely LOVE a good wine or a yummy brew-hahah.

Ahhh, hope your hangover is cured soon!! Hang in there!!

Mmm, such CRRRREAMY oats!! They almost look like mashed potatoes, haha 😀

    No alcohol for me!!

    HAPPY FRIDAY, CAITLIN!!!!!!!

  • Erica November 21, 2008, 5:52 am

I rarely ever drink- maybe 1 beer a month (if that). I also went to a pretty big party school (Penn State) and drank quite a bit! My body feels much healthier now that I rarely drink!

  • therunningaddict November 21, 2008, 5:58 am

I am really not an alcohol fan…I guess I just don’t like the taste of it. Wine is certainly something I do not like at all.
When I do go out, however, I tend to have one of the following which are my “favourites”: mojito, jagermeister, tequila, baileys or malibu

  • D10 November 21, 2008, 5:58 am

I was never a big drinker. To be honest I just don’t enjoy the taste.

Hope you get in a great run tonight.

  • I am Angie Pooh November 21, 2008, 6:15 am

    P.S. Hope you feel better!!!

  • Balance, Joy and Delicias! November 21, 2008, 6:15 am

    awesome breakfast!!!!!!

I don’t drink at all!! yea…i’m weird, but I just don’t like the taste of alcohol!!!
sorry can’t help you with that~

  • Rebecca November 21, 2008, 6:21 am

i drink a few glasses of wine with dinner throughout the week. in college i was a big drinker too…but my body just can’t take it anymore! back then i NEVER got hangovers and would get up and go running as if i had just been drinking gatorade all night. now, if i have a “big night” i am bound to the couch ALL DAY! its soooo not worth it.

  • lauren November 21, 2008, 6:22 am

I am the same in that – I dont drink like I used to in college. Depending on what the plans are, I may not drink at all one week and then drink 2-3 nights another. But I havent been hungover in awhile, because I hate the way I feel, so I usually keep my drinks to a minimum. this weekend may be a different story though. 😉

  • Tami November 21, 2008, 6:26 am

no alcohol for me either, i never really liked the taste and i certain did not like the way it made you feel when you had too much.

  • Joanna November 21, 2008, 6:32 am

    Hi Caitlin –
I’ve been following your blog and I think it’s awesome! I love your meal ideas. I live in NYC and saw you’ll be up here for your bachelorette – if you need any suggestions on where to go I have a million. Have fun!

  • Caitlin (see bride run) November 21, 2008, 6:39 am

joanna – thanks so much for reading and commenting! my maid of honor is in charge of planning everything, but thanks so much for the offer!!

  • Mica November 21, 2008, 6:49 am

Wow, I was surprised that so many people are like me and “just don’t like the taste” of alcohol in general. You really do feel like the minority in college if you don’t enjoy drinking.

I hope you feel better, lady!

Also–I got “In Defense of Food” last night. I’m looking forward to reading it on my train ride to VA.

  • seeleelive (for the love of peanut butter) November 21, 2008, 6:49 am

Hey Caitlin! I am a freshman in college as your know, and here it is considered a little bit of a party school, but actually not that much. I also find myself hanging out with girls who love to have fun and go to parties, but do not necessarily drink on the weekdays. When we do go out, I usually drink 2-3 drinks (one night a week) while my friends chug about 5-8. Yikes!!!

  • Meg November 21, 2008, 6:53 am

    Oh boy…that granola looks delicious!

    Hope you feel better soon!

I don’t drink alcohol. I never really did like it!

  • RhodeyGirl/Sabrina November 21, 2008, 6:54 am

4 weeks is perfect! did you plan your wedding date around that company shutdown?

so excited for you Caitlin! It’s so soon!

  • Bridget November 21, 2008, 6:57 am

I used to drink a lot in college too! Although my version of a lot in college was average in college. It only took about a month after graduating for my tolerance to sky rocket down to nothing haha. Which was good. I would hardly ever drink during the week, then once in a whiel on weekends, but since then any time I ever get drunk I get sick…not fun, so now its just not worth it to me. Now I drink about once a month, and sometimes if I have a glass of wine at dinner I don’t even finish it. I don’t want to drink my calories, it saves money, I dont have to pay for cabs (I usually volunteer to drive), and I like to dance at bars anyways so I dont need to be drunk to do it. I still ike to get a nice buzz once in a while…like at homecoming is like my drunk day of the year hahha. Ok that was long…have a great day!

So exciting about the wedding rihgt around the corner!!!

  • ashley (sweet and natural) November 21, 2008, 7:01 am

I am not a big drinker at ALL anymore. Not that I was terribly hard core in college, but now I’m satisfied with one glass of wine and usually turn down offers for other drinks. I just don’t like the way I FEEL when I drink.

  • Oh She Glows November 21, 2008, 7:06 am

I have all but stopped drinking in the past year. I used to be a big ‘binge’ drinker- I didnt go out often but when I did it was shots galore. I feel much better not going over my limit now. Maybe I am just getting old too! haha

oh no!!!!! hopefully the website goes crazy! are you going to share the launch with us so we can buy stuff?

  • just me November 21, 2008, 7:13 am

my college was pretty small so if you wanted to drink you had to go else-where…so i never really drank, and still don’t. I didn’t take my first drink till my 21st bday and since then have probably had a handful of some…mostly shots…hahaha…

    glad you liked the granola!!

the rest of your year sounds awesome!!! i know you’re getting married on the 3rd, but i’ve forgotten, when you leaving for your honeymoon and getting back?

  • Caitlin (see bride run) November 21, 2008, 7:18 am

rhodey girl – the website is launched but we’re waiting to make sure we work out all the shipping/purchasing bugs before announcing it to the blog world. i want it to be perfect for you guys!

just me – the wedding is on January 3 and i’ll be blogging up til then! meghann will do a guest post to fill you guys in on the weddding details 🙂 and then im honeymooning until the 13th. so no posts until i return!

  • Nellie November 21, 2008, 7:18 am

It’s crazy how your body adapts like that, isn’t it!?

I’m not a big drinker at all. All it took for me was one bad drink-too-much-sick-for-days experience and I NEVER want to feel like that EVER again. Plus my school is definitely not a party school, they give us enough work here to last a lifetime!

  • ksgoodeats November 21, 2008, 7:18 am

I hardly ever drink to be honest but when I do have those crazy nights it’s almost always bad news bears in the morning!

Love the oatmeal 🙂 Happy Friday!

  • Catherine November 21, 2008, 7:22 am

I’m definitely like you – used to be a big drinker and now it’s way toned down. I am however a huge fan of wine (I am one of those who collect it) and always have about 10+ bottles in my wine rack as does the bf.

I do not go overboard though… we usually split a bottle so I get about 2 smallish glasses and he gets 3-4 glasses. When going out if I order something like a martini which I love, I only get one because any more and I’d be feelin it the next day! I do make sure to go for a run if I’m ever feeling hungover even if it makes me want to boot because I know afterwards I’ll feel so much better – it seems to flush it all out of my body. My brother taught me that trick.

Where are you going in NYC for your bachelorette?? That’s where I live!! 🙂

  • Kyle and Darci November 21, 2008, 7:24 am

I never really drank much in college, but this past year I have been more, hence my weight gain and that’s why I’m on here now! But I went out on Wednesday night and just made sure to save some “points” for that night. My drink of choice was MGD 64 and that is only 1 point/bottle! And the scale even went down the next morning!! Hope your hangover goes away!! I had a nasty one yesterday…so I took a vaca day!!

  • Carolina John November 21, 2008, 7:44 am

yea when you get older the hangovers hurt more than they used to. It’s how you know you are too old to do that much drinking anymore.

I went to appalachian state high in the north carolina mountains. it was such a big party school averaging 8 ft of snowfall every year. we used to drink until we were warm. which was sometimes not until the spring. Nothing like an outside keg party when it’s 17 degrees and snowing.

And i’m irish. Getting drunk and having sex with strangers is what we call an introduction. So i had my fair share of hangovers. It took a good wife to make them go away.

  • Rose November 21, 2008, 7:50 am

    Good question!

I actually only really drink once a month… I don’t even have occasional glasses of wine. The problem with this is that when I do drink – I never know how much to consume.

  • Betsy November 21, 2008, 7:52 am

i only started getting hangovers after college. my “old age” is catching up with me. i HATE hangovers though. once, when I was living in Spain after college, I had a late night and ended up in bed the next day till 8pm!!! It was awful…I limit my drinking now cause I get such horrid hangovers.

  • carolinebee November 21, 2008, 7:55 am

It’s SO much nicer to drink 1 or 2 glasses for enjoyment rather than “college style”. Plus, now after 2 glasses of wine, I’m pretty much done-zo! 😀 I’m sure your night out was worth it, have a good run tonight!

  • BOBBI McCORMICK November 21, 2008, 8:00 am

well I have a drink of wine at least once a week, but this past weekend I was bad and had a full bottle of wine over the course of the whole weekend and some more at the familys house on Tuesday night. Let’s just say it’s been a hard week.

But for some reason I had drunk it early enough in the night with lot’s of water, that I didn’t have a hangover any time. I love wine I could never give that up:)

  • Anonymous November 21, 2008, 8:03 am

I have to say I love to drink, my family owns a beer buisness, but I am healthy I just make sure that if I am going to drink I drink tons of water and I definately work out the next day no matter how bad I feel. I go to a big party school University of Arizona.

  • Julie November 21, 2008, 8:16 am

4 weeks off! You lucky gal!

I rerely drink these days. I had my fun back in college too where I’d drink every weekend to the point of embarresing myself/blacking out ect. so I guess I’ve had my fill of partying. I was much heavier then, booze + booze muchies = 140lbs on a 5′ frame. Not good. Since I’ve grown up and lost weight (30lbs) I have cut back A LOT! I dirnk maybe once a month if that, and I only have 2-3 drinks when I do go out. I don’t like being hungover, I don’t like getting too drunk, and I hate wasting calories on booze.

  • Tina November 21, 2008, 8:25 am

I also used to drink A LOT in college! My school was a big party school too– it actually made the Princeton Review list for “most beer” (something like that)! Anyways, now I drink 2-3 drinks on the weekends… and a glass of wine here and there. Some weeks, I don’t drink at all… some weeks, I drink a lot more! BUT I can’t handle the hangover anymore!

  • Justine November 21, 2008, 8:43 am

I’m not a big drinker anymore. I usually will only drink once per week, if that. And it’s usually only one drink, occasionally two. I used to always get a drink when we went out to eat, then I decided that it makes the bill a lot more expensive and I don’t even want it half the time. I enjoy eating my calories rather than drinking them most of the time 🙂

  • Katie November 21, 2008, 8:58 am

    Praline granola?! Yum!

I drink 1-2 nights a week, but I’ve also been noticing how much better I feel when I don’t. Now that I’m getting back to my exercise routine, I’m going to seriously think twice about imbibing because I know how hard it is to get up and onto a machine to try to sweat it out!

  • chasedaylight November 21, 2008, 8:59 am

I probably drink once a month, if that. Usually if I go out with my family or a girlfriend I’ll have something to drink. Besides that, it’s too expensive! I got over that drinking “stage” of my life after my first year of college.

Your breakfast looked yummy! Have a great day!

  • Halie November 21, 2008, 9:16 am

I just turned 21 about 2 weeks ago and since then I’ve only had about a glass and a half of wine. I have never really liked alcohol, my taste buds haven’t developed a liking for beer and I really dislike hard alcohol and cocktails.

But I do like wine, but I can’t drink very much and the restaurants in my area fill glasses too full! It’s more like 2 glasses worth in one! So when I went out for my first drink I had to let my mom finish me drink for me!

  • Amanda November 21, 2008, 9:16 am

I started drinking a lot after I met my fiance. He was a heavy drinker and I was trying to “win him over” or something. haha. I gained about 10 pounds, which wasn’t that bad because I was still thin… but I felt huge. So, after a year of that I finally convinced myself and my fiance that we needed to stop that habit.

I have not had a drink since May 2007 and I have lost that 10 lbs. My fiance still drinks occasionally, but he sees the benefits of NOT drinking and likes them more than drinking! 🙂

  • greendogwine November 21, 2008, 9:51 am

Sorry about the hangover! I totally feel your pain!

Thanks so much for the kind words about Lando – it’s really nice to know there are other people out there “like you” when you feel badly. I really appreciated your words!

    Have a great weekend!

  • Pearl November 21, 2008, 10:10 am

that looks great! i never drink, either – i just never got into it, even though all of my friends have.

hope that we can keep in touch 🙂 and congrats to you and your future DH (dear hubby)!

  • bitesoflife November 21, 2008, 10:14 am

Your oats looks amazing, that granola makes it look so yummy!

As for drinking, I used to be a party girl but a really bad too much to drink experience cleaned me up. Now I really only drink a little bit and only if I’m in the mood.

  • arielle November 21, 2008, 10:14 am

I drink. I like wine and wouldn’t ever want to give it up. I don’t put restrictions on it really…a few nights a week, couple of glasses. Probably more on the weekends 🙂 Definitely drank more in college though.

  • aron November 21, 2008, 10:15 am

OMG i am 100% with you… i was a BIG drinker in college too, all the time. now i have one or 2 and i can feel it!! i always cut it out the last month before marathon training so i am sure my next drink i will really be a lightweight 🙂

  • Suzanne November 21, 2008, 11:45 am

Am I the only one who doesn’t drink much anymore, but MISSES IT TERRIBLY? I will be fully upfront and say that reason numero uno why I don’t drink is a purely vain desire to avoid empty calories. “Just one,” unfortunately, either puts me to sleep or just whets the appetite for the monster within. Let me temper this comment by adding, in case anyone has any wrong ideas about my overall priorities/work ethic, that I also graduated from college in 4 years with a double major and a 4.0 GPA to show for it. As if the alcohol calories aren’t enough to contend with, the same invariably to be accompanied by late night pizza slices. yummmmmmmmy

  • magpie November 21, 2008, 11:49 am

I was a big drinker my freshman year of college – no wonder I gained weight!

I can’t believe you have so much time off. That is SO AWESOME. The wedding is so soon!

  • Caitlin (see bride run) November 21, 2008, 11:50 am

suzanne- ahhahaha i commend your honesty. i feel that way about similar other “bad” things that i probably shouldn’t mention on the blog. alcohol is one of them! i DO love to cut loose and party. but you’re right… the trouble with alcohol calories is they are always accompanied by cookie calories or pizza calories.

  • Emily November 21, 2008, 12:50 pm

    hi there caitlin ~

good choice of breakfast post drinking – looks good!

i drink one or two small glasses of wine a week usually. i have to pour it though, as i really do have just enough to go with my dinner. if my boyfriend pours, it takes a lot of willpower to not finish the full glass that’s set in front of me. i don’t tend to drink any other alcohol though, so really enjoy a little wine.

a month off sounds so good! enjoy 🙂 (I’m sure you will!).

  • HangryPants November 21, 2008, 1:21 pm

I know I hardly ever drink and when I do, I feel like death!

Have fun at your late romantic dinner tonight!

    Heather

  • Anonymous November 22, 2008, 8:33 pm

im amazed and feeling a little embarassed – i never knew there were so many non-drinkers out there! i wish i didn’t like the taste!

i was a division I college runner and still compete in marathons and stuff for an elite team…i have run a marathon in the 2:40s and competed in the olympic trials (i am bragging at this point) so i still run lots and care of course about being healthy. but i have always lived with a “work hard play hard” mentality. i love to have a glass of wine to unwind after a long day, and certainly go out on weekends/celebrations/holidays and have many more than one glass:) i totally understand that everyone has different priorities, but i would never give up these fun, memorable nights to control my weight! to me, life is just too short!
