Uprooted

When I see stuff like this, I have to stop and take a picture.  I am totally ‘that’ person.

Random, right?  A news crew was there, and the cameraman said it just spontaneously fell over!  How scary – luckily no one was hurt.

The spontaneously falling tree was a good metaphor for my day.  I worked a lot, bought health insurance (bahh), bought car insurance (double bahhh), and did lots of boring paperwork.  Help!  Is it the weekend yet?

Eats:

IMG_1530

Sesame tofu over a been of greens with potato salad (a gift from Beverly’s Gourmet… they were both totally yummy.  Love that local lady!):

IMG_1536

So delicious.  Gotta love dill and potatoes.

IMG_1531

Dessert was chocolate and potato chips.  It was an awesome combo.

No exercise today – sometimes, life gets in the way!  But it’s probably for the rest that I continue to totally rest my quad.  I’m still praying I’ll be ready to race on Saturday in DC… Hope floats.  🙂

Oh, and in regards to my Stop Cursing Challenge – it’s hard to stop cursing! I’m just trying to be more aware of it and correct myself out loud when I curse.  Just like my technique to blast Fat Talk, I replace my curse with a positive word (more descriptive) and apologize to whoever I cursed in front of.   But really… it’s going to be a long journey.  $#^%!!!

Good night!

  • Katy (The Singing Runner) March 23, 2011, 9:11 pm

Dang! That tree is HUGE!!!!! Your dinner looks delicious! 😀 Have a great night!

  • Alexa @ The Girl In Chucks March 23, 2011, 9:11 pm

I took pictures of a fallen tree in a park while walking home the other day. A storm had blown through and a giant, old tree fell over…and crushed a bench! So scary! Luckily, I’m sure the bench was unoccupied due to the storms…

  • Michele @ Healthy Cultivations March 23, 2011, 9:13 pm

I love taking photos whenever and wherever too – lol. Glad to read your committed to sticking with ditching the cursing. I’ve been down that road, and it does get easier. Over time, you’ll find it rarely happens even without paying attention.

  • Holly @ The Runny Egg March 23, 2011, 9:13 pm

That tree is insane! Thankfully it didn’t fall towards that brick house in the background! (or over the road!) — that is actually really scary if you think about it!

  • lisa March 23, 2011, 9:14 pm

chocolate and potato chips sounds like an amazing snack choice….and salt and vinegar chips to boot? Yum! I must try this!

  • Kacy March 23, 2011, 9:25 pm

Wow that’s crazy. Definitely glad no one got hurt!
I don’t even know if I’m ready to try to quit cursing. Most of the time I’m just talking to myself anyways, haha.

  • Tiffany (Stuffed with Fluff) March 23, 2011, 9:26 pm

No worries, i’m totally “that girl” as well! I’m glad no one was hurt.

and ohmygosh, Walker’s chips?! I’m sure your SIL brought them back from the UK, but is there any chance you got them in the states? I love them, they totally remind me of my summer abroad =)

    • Caitlin March 24, 2011, 8:19 am

No I wish! She brought them over – they are the BEST.

      • Kaitlyn March 24, 2011, 2:55 pm

        Hey!
I’ve lived over here in Europe for awhile… just so you know Walker chips and Lay’s are the same! Same company, same brand, same chips! Just different names on different sides of the pond. Kind of like Dryer’s and Edy’s ice cream… Same thing, different name based on which side of the Mississippi you live.

  • kristine March 23, 2011, 9:27 pm

oh my that tree is insaaaaane!

    i lovvvveee dill

  • Mary (What's Cookin' with Mary) March 23, 2011, 9:28 pm

The last time I went camping (in addition to being up close an personal with a black bear) … the guys set up my ‘camp shower’ under some of the trees in out campsite. Abotu an hour later as we were still unpacking a HUGE piece of one of the trees came down about a foot from my little shower tent spraying it with mud. SCARY.

    • Caitlin March 24, 2011, 8:20 am

      That is terrifying!

  • Julie @ Shining From Within March 23, 2011, 9:33 pm

That’s a HUGE tree! You look so tiny next to it haha. I need to stop cursing too.. it’s not thhhhat bad but it happens every once and a while and it’s not lady-like! I love salt and vinegar chips. I’d eat them every single day for a year if they were health food… but who say’s they aren’t? 😉

  • J3nn (Jenn's Menu and Lifestyle Blog) March 23, 2011, 9:35 pm

Wow, that uprooted tree is freaky. I’m guessing it spent its life gathering water at the surface or close to it, so it never grew deeply.

That potato salad looks $@&! awesome! Sorry, bad influence, lol.

  • courtney @ the granola chronicles March 23, 2011, 9:42 pm

I really need to get some sesame seeds – they always look great on your tofu (like the perfect baked tofu!).

  • Stacie March 23, 2011, 9:43 pm

My friend gave up cursing for lent and I’ve got him saying some choice words on a few occasions so it must be hard to try to take those words out of your vocabulary. Good luck to ya!

  • Zo March 23, 2011, 9:45 pm

Your dessert reminded me of the new Ben and Jerry’s Jimmy Fallon Late Night Snack flavor…it has fudge covered potato chips in it..and salty caramel. I haven’t tried it [yet]. Have you?

  • Maryea {Happy Healthy Mama} March 23, 2011, 9:48 pm

Wow that tree is crazy! I would have stopped to take a picture, too. 🙂

  • Baking 'n' Books March 23, 2011, 9:55 pm

    I’m so bad.

I curse like a sailor. But is it just me or does it help relieve stress and tension more – I know just me. But there’s something about those F-bombs…

  • Sarena (The Non-Dairy Queen) March 23, 2011, 10:02 pm

That tree is crazy! I hope you are feeling better. I’m ready for the weekend too. Only 2 more days!

  • Heather @ Health, Happiness, and Hope March 23, 2011, 10:02 pm

That’s crazy!!! Glad no one was hurt, and glad you got a photo op. 😉

Good luck on kicking the habit!

  • Kristina March 23, 2011, 10:03 pm

That tree is CRAZY! I grew up in a construction owners household-aka-i’ve got a truckers mouth! It’s so hard to break the habit!

  • kate March 23, 2011, 10:07 pm

I commend you on trying to kick the cursing habit! I’ve tried so many things to try to stop! I have such a potty mouth it’s ridiculous! I’m currently trying to give it up for lent…not going to well…I always used to try the thing where you pay a dollar every time you curse and then donate the money…yah, I ended up broke and still cursing…maybe I’ll try your method! anyways, GOOD LUCK!!!

    • Caitlin March 24, 2011, 8:20 am

Yeah I think I would also end up broke and then cursing even more.

  • Julie (A Case of the Runs) March 23, 2011, 10:38 pm

Sounds like progress on the non-cursing front to me!

I know what you mean by insurance agggh-s. I’ve been buying my own for a while…

  • Amy March 23, 2011, 10:39 pm

I need to be on the ‘STOP THE F BOMB” train. Such a bad, bad, bad habit— thanks for the inspiration.

  • Nichole March 23, 2011, 10:40 pm

While we’re on the topic of potato chips you HAVEE to try Lay’s new Kettle-Cooked Jalapeno chips… they are dangerous. I’m afraid to buy my own bag, I just keep stealing them from my roomie 🙂

  • Runeatrepeat March 23, 2011, 10:44 pm

I’m having the hardest time stopping my horrible cussing habit 🙁

  • Nicole @ Yuppie Yogini March 23, 2011, 10:51 pm

%$#!@ Love it! I saw an uprooted tree too! Amazing!

  • Rachel March 23, 2011, 10:55 pm

hang around some kids for a few hours, that’ll nip your cursing habit in the bud! my 22 month old daughter is a SPONGE & does & says everything we do. we’ve stopped cursing in record time!

  • Carolyn @ lovinlosing March 23, 2011, 11:06 pm

Sounds like you had the totally awesome grown up kind’ve day I had which included working, job searching since Congress can’t get their crap together and sign a budget which might result in me being laid off, and dropping off tax stuff so we can get our refund from the state in order to pay what we owe the Feds. 😉 I love being a grown up.

  • Kiran March 23, 2011, 11:25 pm

Thats a huge tree! Thank god no one is hurt.

  • Annette @ EnjoyYourHealthyLife March 24, 2011, 12:30 am

whoa that was a huge tree!!! I am so glad no one got hurt 🙂 And your tofu rocks!!

  • Jamie@everydaydolce March 24, 2011, 12:34 am

Chocolate and potato chips! I need to try this very soon. What a cool photo, that tree really is huge!

  • Laura (Starloz) March 24, 2011, 12:49 am

oh boy, thats a huge tree to fall over. it’s lucky.

  • Jolene (www.everydayfoodie.ca) March 24, 2011, 1:12 am

That EXACT same thing happened with a tree at least that size when my friends and I were camping a few years ago. A friend grabbed a drink from his tent, walked out, and about 5 seconds later a ginormous tree uprooted and crashed down on his entire tent, indenting into the ground. This was about 1/2 an hour after my friend had woken up for the day. Crazy stuff.

It was too big to chain saw through, and we couldn’t recover the tent, sleeping bag, air mattress, etc..

  • Emma (Namaste Everyday) March 24, 2011, 3:33 am

It’s ok to rest, especially if you are having a stressful day 🙂

  • Presley March 24, 2011, 6:01 am

You have me craving fresh dill now! I need a gyro and Tzatziki! 🙂

  • The Teenage Taste March 24, 2011, 7:19 am

Glad you took a rest day! All that paperwork was enough of a workout…for your brain! 😉

PS – Salt and vinegar chips are the best! Seriously, they’re so yummy! 😛

  • Kara March 24, 2011, 7:23 am

I have to get better about my cursing too. It’s all fun and games until the kid gets sent home from preschool after repeating Mommy’s choice words.

I bet the people who own that house are glad the tree didn’t fall backwards!

  • Ashley @ Feeding Ashley March 24, 2011, 7:30 am

That tree is massive! I can’t believe a news crew was there, was nothing else exciting happening in Charlotte?
I have a question, I know you’ve talked about knee and IT band pain, but I was wondering if you’ve dealt with ankle pain. My ankles hurt a lot when I ran yesterday, and I don’t think it’s a sprain or a fracture, but I have a race coming up in a couple weeks and I don’t know how to handle it.

    • Caitlin March 24, 2011, 8:22 am

Yup, I had really bad ankle pain after my marathon and feared a stress fracture… Regardless of whether you have a sprain or fracture, you have to rest (like, totally rest) and ice. Do 20 minutes on, 20 off, and repeat a few times once a day. If it still hurts after a week, I’d see a doc. Good luck!

    • Cyndi March 24, 2011, 9:13 am

Ashley – check your shoes, too. My ankles kill when I’m in need of new treads.

  • Ella March 24, 2011, 7:55 am

That happened to our yard once ! Except .. it was 15 trees. We still have no idea what happened.. I live in friggin Virginia so a tornado seems unlikely… but… it remains a mystery.

We had a news crew come, as well. Apparently.. trees are a big deal.

  • Cyndi March 24, 2011, 9:11 am

Borrow a toddler for a day – you’ll stop cursing. It will break your heart the first time they repeat you and you realize you just taught that to them. Also, I think working around colleagues at a young age curbed my northern foul-mouth. I didn’t want to come across as immature and really began watching what I said – I may have thought it, but I tried not to curse out loud. Good luck, it’s a good habit to break.

  • Ash @ Good Taste Healthy Me March 24, 2011, 9:42 am

That is awesome! At a house we rented senior year this happened to a tree in our yard after an ice storm. It was wild!

  • Courtney March 24, 2011, 10:55 am

Where I work, the girls I work with aren’t allowed to curse. I always correct them as soon as I hear them curse. If they say “sh*t,” I automatically say “shoot!” and I replace crud for “cr*p”. They think I’m weird and a dork but after a few days I catch them saying shoot and crud. I think correcting yourself right away is really going to help you! Good Luck!

  • Sam @ the neurotic yogini March 24, 2011, 10:57 am

Good luck with your continued cursing challenge! Keep us updated on any more “tips” you find useful.. we could all use a little less profanity i feel.. there’s enough in our media these days 😛

  • Johanna B March 24, 2011, 11:55 am

I learned to stop cursing when I got a job as an elementary school librarian. Didn’t want to offend the little kiddies ears. Turned out most of them cursed worse than I did.

  • Amber K March 24, 2011, 12:28 pm

What an interesting lunch combo! I’m always trying to combine things and I tend to just stick with the same old, same old.

  • chelsey @ clean eating chelsey March 24, 2011, 12:34 pm

THat is so crazy about that tree! Holy cow!

  • Erica March 24, 2011, 12:55 pm

Health insurance is ridiculous crazy. We buy ours privately because we own our own business, and it is really expensive. Our rates just went up again, actually. For our family of 5 we are now paying something like $2400/quarter…and that’s with a really high deductible! It’s nuts. But we can’t shop it or change it now, since my cancer diagnosis we are completely stuck. I am so thankful for it, but dang, it’s a killer.

    • Caitlin March 24, 2011, 3:57 pm

Ugh you’re so right… but at least you have it. So true.

Still I hate paying for it.

  • Dee March 24, 2011, 2:15 pm

Your photo reminded of a day when I left my apartment, headphones on ready for a run, walked down stairs and suddenly heard yelling and a large uniformed man (fireman) coming at me yelling to get out of the way! Working on my playlist, I had been completely oblivious to the fact that a tree as large as the one in your photo, had fallen from the park across the street and landed on the front lawn of the complex, taking out a car parked (where I often parked) right in front of the complex. The situation was still dangerous because the tree had fallen on electric wire, so they were yelling at me not to walk into the middle of their clean-up work. I wish I had taken a picture- it was an amazing sight to see such a huge, massive tree horizontal in front of me like that!

    • Caitlin March 24, 2011, 3:57 pm

      Crazy story!!!!
