Ten Glorious Miles

in Marathon Training

Nothing like a long run to make me feel human again!

Last night, one glass of wine turned into two glasses… which was one glass of wine too much.  Yikes!  Anne, the Husband, and I had an absolute blast, but I had a pretty big Malbec-related headache this morning.  🙂

Nothing that waffles + a long run can’t fix!

Pre-run fuel was whole wheat waffle with banana, fruit, sesame almonds, and honey Greek yogurt.

One breakfast digested and we said goodbye to our houseguests, I set out on a 10.0 mile run.  I was definitely feeling a little off, but by Mile 2.0 everything seemed to come together.

How’s the weather where you are?  It’s absolutely PERFECT pre-Fall day in Charlotte – a balmy and breezy 75 degrees or so.  The cool air was exactly what I needed to maintain a great, moderate clip the entire time.

Drank Gatorade throughout the run:

I tried to pick it up the last mile and finished strong!

  • Distance: 10.0 miles
  • Duration:  1:40
  • Mile 1: 10:05
  • Mile 2:  9:30
  • Mile 3: 9:53
  • Mile 4: 10:01
  • Mile 5: 10:24
  • Mile 6: 10:21
  • Mile 7: 10:03
  • Mile 8:10:01
  • Mile 9: 10:31
  • Mile 10: 9:40

Can I just say that I love taper weeks in marathon training? :)  I also love how much training warps your perception of a “shorter” run.  Compared to last week’s 15 miler, today’s was a breeze.

Post-run snack:

Pre-cooked beets, brown rice and tabbouli, and BBQ baked tofu:

Weelll done on the run! That hose-shot of you is amaze!
I did 15miles today – it made my 4 the other day pale in comparison!!

  • Sana September 5, 2010, 1:47 pm

Today’s weather was beyond amazing and I jumped out of my bed to run! I wish we could have 65 degree everyday! Everyone would have amazeball runs!

  • Lauren (Clean Eats in the Dirty South) September 5, 2010, 1:49 pm

the weather = epic over here! it’s breezy and about 79 degrees. i can’t wait for fall to be here 🙂

  • holly @ couchpotatoathlete September 5, 2010, 1:52 pm

The weather has been lovely in MN — a cool breeze each day, high 60s, low 70s, beautiful!!! I can feel Fall coming closer each day.

Great run! I agree about the taper weeks — its amazing when 15-16 miles seems “easy” 🙂

  • Kristy @ Kristyruns.com September 5, 2010, 2:01 pm

Cooler weather makes for such better runs! Yay! That bbq tofu looks scrumptious!

  • Annie@stronghealthyfit September 5, 2010, 2:01 pm

Same weather here in NH today- perfect for running! I had a lovely 6-mile run this morning 🙂

  • Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat September 5, 2010, 2:03 pm

Hehehe I love those first 2 photos!! Congrats on that amazing run. Enjoy the rest of the long weekend! 🙂

  • Jasmine @ Eat Move Write September 5, 2010, 2:08 pm

Ha ha. Yes, training must warp you. 10 miles seems impossible to me! 🙂

  • Sarena (The Non Dairy Queen) September 5, 2010, 2:09 pm

So glad you are enjoying your day. Good job on the run! Your eats look delicious! Have a great Sunday!

  • Caitlyn @ A Spoonful of Life September 5, 2010, 2:11 pm

The change in weather is wonderful. It was 53* this morning, compard to the 90* last week!!

    Congrats on your 10 miles!

  • Paige @Running Around Normal September 5, 2010, 2:11 pm

It is glorious here today too! I ran 8 miles and they went by SUPER quick! Beautiful day!

  • Heather September 5, 2010, 2:19 pm

great job! its about 83 here in MS but way better than 97, and low humidity too! I am loving it!

  • Nicole - yuppie yogini September 5, 2010, 2:19 pm

Good for you for sticking with your running plan after a night of wine…that is not easy!

  • Haley September 5, 2010, 2:21 pm

Oh man, if I want it to be 75 degrees when I’m running I have to leave the house before 5am, haha. Hawai’i doesn’t afford too many cool days, but then again, I never have to worry about it being TOO cold either :). Nice job with the 10 miles today!

  • Amanda (modernation) September 5, 2010, 2:23 pm

The weather is great here, too. 70s now, 80s later. I can’t wait for Fall, especially for marathon training. I did 12 miles today for marathon training and am looking forward to taper weeks coming up! Next week is my first drop in mileage from 12 to 10. I am sure I will notice more of a difference later in training.

  • Little Bookworm September 5, 2010, 2:25 pm

Congrats on the run, love your breakfast!

  • Megan @ The Daily Sweat September 5, 2010, 2:27 pm

I had a bit too much Malbec last night too! But I woke up in the middle of the night thinking, “oh crap, my run tomorrow is gonna suck, better chug some water.” So I did and I felt fine this morning for my 7 miler.

  • Kristen @ That Hoosier Girl September 5, 2010, 2:28 pm

I don’t know that 10 miles will ever feel like ‘nothin! I’m always pretty excited with a day where I do more than 4!!!

  • christina cadden September 5, 2010, 2:55 pm

Love the photos! I am always so sweaty after I run but when i stop I get this sudden chill and goose bumps. Not sure I am brave enough to pour water over my head!

  • sarah k. @ the pajama chef September 5, 2010, 3:01 pm

love the first 2 photos!! sweet. i love long runs!

  • Lindsey @ Gingerbread Bagels September 5, 2010, 3:05 pm

Great job on the run! Mmm your breakfast looks tasty!

  • MoniMeals September 5, 2010, 3:20 pm

I love your first 2 pics and I love the meals/snacks you had, YUM! We have a lot in comomn it seems. I also am very into fitness and food, cooking and recipes. I am a trainer in LA and post my recipes on my site. I look forward to checkin-in with you!

  • Kylie @ A Hungry Spoon September 5, 2010, 3:20 pm

Fall weather is in full swing in Morgantown! It’s a perfect 68 degrees here today 🙂

Your waffles look so tasty–Saturday and Sunday mornings are always fruit n’ nut waffles or pancakes at our house, too. Glad you had a good run!

  • jackie September 5, 2010, 3:21 pm

    Hi Caitlin!

You are such an inspiration and healthy role model. I actually have been training for my first 1/2 marathon and love reading your tips and your own experience. I do have one question, I typically run first thing in the morning. My longest run I have gotten to so far is 7.5 miles. I’m just wondering, when I go longer distances I’ll need more fuel. I like the idea of eating breakfast 1st but how long do you wait till your “digested” on average. Thanks for such a great blog!
    Jackie

    • Caitlin September 5, 2010, 7:19 pm

I can run about thirty minutes after eating a full breakfast but other people need more time. definitely experiment with eating a PB sandwich or something before your runs because you will need to do it race morning! it’s really a matter of figuring out what works for you!

good luck on your half mary!

  • Heather (Heather's Dish) September 5, 2010, 3:36 pm

you’re right, that weather sounds PERFECT for a great run! way to finish strong too 🙂

  • Jillian @ Reshape Your Life September 5, 2010, 3:40 pm

That weather sounds awesome… It’s probably around 90’s here in Texas. Waaayy too hot, I’m so sick of it, but it will be hot until the end of October. So I guess I just have to get used to it.

Enjoy the nice weather for me!

  • Carol September 5, 2010, 3:40 pm

It’s currently +7C or about 45F and raining here in Calgary (Alberta, Canada). That made for a rather damp 23km or just over 14 miles. But after last week’s 32km (20 miles), this was a picnic of a run! Even pushed out race pace a few times.

  • Lindsey September 5, 2010, 3:58 pm

Great job on the run! I did 10 miles, too, this morning. It was cool and breezy, with just a little sun; however, it didn’t last long–now its super hot here in Georgia. Oh well.
Looks like a delicious breakfast and lunch by the way! Hope you enjoy the rest of your weekend 🙂

  • Neen@Broad Bean to Runner Bean September 5, 2010, 3:58 pm

well done for the run! your eats for the day look mega too!

  • Bria September 5, 2010, 4:11 pm

Great run Caitlin! I did 8.5 mi today (I think that’s the equivalent of 14 Canadian kilometers haha) and it zapped me. Amazing what a few weeks off running can do to your fitness level! Which I guess is the flipside to how marathon training makes those medium long distances seem like cake 🙂

    That waffle looks unreal.

  • eatmovelove September 5, 2010, 4:40 pm

It’s labour day in Canada too 🙂 LOVE that first pic – so neat. What a run – your splits are so impressive.

  • Amber K September 5, 2010, 4:41 pm

The waffle looks amazing! Great job on getting out fo ra good run. 🙂

  • Stacey (The Habit of Healthy) September 5, 2010, 4:42 pm

Love those pictures of you after your run, so cute! Good job on the run by the way, especially as you weren’t really your best to start with.

  • Chelsea September 5, 2010, 4:56 pm

YEY for your 5k time, even if you got off track (my worst fear by the way!) and YEY for your 10 miles today!! 🙂

  • Mary @ Bites and Bliss September 5, 2010, 4:58 pm

The weather was *perfect* here this morning, too!! It’s kind of hot right now..but ohhh man I could have stayed outside for hours earlier.
Glad you had such a great run! Congrats on ten miles!

  • Leanne @ Radiant, Balanced & Fit September 5, 2010, 5:04 pm

The pictures of water pouring on your face looks so refreshing! Great job on the run Caitlin!

  • Heidi - apples under my bed September 5, 2010, 5:27 pm

Those first two pics of you are so cute 🙂
it is WEIRD weather here in Melbourne, Australia. It is Spring here, but wild storms with no power. Then it will be a bit sunny and warm. Then more rain. So unpredictable.
Those waffles look delicious. I’ve never had waffles but I’m tempted to buy a waffle iron after thinking about it for a while.
    Bring on more perfect weather!!
    Heidi xo

  • Camille September 5, 2010, 5:35 pm

    What a lovely run!
I think I am going to do a nice “short” 10 miler tomorrow 🙂

  • Kristina @ spabettie September 5, 2010, 5:52 pm

the weather here is perfect also… blue sky with Little Puffy Clouds 😉

I LOVE the sesame cashews from TJ’s, and see you’ve been eating them lately also… but ALMONDS~!! do you get those at TJ’s also???

    I need. I NEED ! 🙂

    Enjoy your Holiday!!

    • Caitlin September 5, 2010, 7:20 pm

      YES SOOOOO GOOD AND ADDICTING.

  • Maren September 5, 2010, 6:04 pm

I keep seeing people top their pancakes and waffles with greek yogurt and I’m starting to feel a craving coming on. It sounds delicious.

  • Lisa (bakebikeblog) September 5, 2010, 6:18 pm

Congrats on your fantastic run!! The weather sounds perfect!

  • Courtney September 5, 2010, 6:23 pm

    I love fall runs 😀 😀

  • Jenn@healthyhoofbeats September 5, 2010, 6:27 pm

Good job on your run! Ten miles may not seem like a lot to you but for me it sure does! 🙂 Today was a beautiful fallish day too, compared to last weeks heat wave atleast!

  • Wei-Wei September 5, 2010, 6:42 pm

Love that first photo of you! And great run, you’re amazing!

  • Ashley @ Nourishing the Soul September 5, 2010, 6:45 pm

I’m laughing at your comment about how training distorts your perception of distance. Totally agree! But 10 miles is certainly nothing to scoff at.

Also, I tend to find that running is a good hangover cure. It might be all in my mind though! Still, two glasses of wine is usually my pre-run max.

  • Marie September 5, 2010, 6:51 pm

Yay for the ten miles! You have really encouraged me to start running…my knees aren’t the greatest but I noticed that you wear knee braces. Does this help? Thanks!

    • Caitlin September 5, 2010, 7:21 pm

Yes! I have tons of knee posts on my FAQ page <– check em out!

      • Marie September 5, 2010, 7:55 pm

Awesome! Thanks! I am so motivated! 🙂

  • Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin September 5, 2010, 6:51 pm

Good job on the run! It was perfect fall weather here too, so I went on a gorgeous 15 mile bike ride. I wish the weather could stay like this until Spring! 😛

  • Joanna @ landanimal.wordpress.com September 5, 2010, 7:02 pm

Awesome run! You are so inspiring to me!

  • April @ Crazy Fabulous Life September 5, 2010, 7:11 pm

    Awesome job on the run!

The weather here is really nice, I’m loving it 🙂

  • maria @ Chasing the Now September 5, 2010, 7:11 pm

    Woohoo for 10 miles!

The weather here was gorgeous yesterday, but it’s looking like another really hot day today!

  • Michelle @ Give Me the Almond Butter September 5, 2010, 7:20 pm

The weather here is 55 degrees and gray clouds. I guess it’s the Northwest for you though.

The baked tofu looks perfect. I want it so badly even though I am still stuffed from lunch.

  • Diana @ frontyardfoodie September 5, 2010, 7:35 pm

Nothing like running to cure a headache! I love how that works, especially since it seems so counter-intuitive.

  • Jessica @ The Process of Healing September 5, 2010, 8:26 pm

Go you on the run! Nothing like exercise to make you feel like a new person!

  • Mary September 5, 2010, 8:33 pm

I actually had the heat on today in raleigh driving to work at o’dark thirty this morning! I love the first two pictures, you’re a warrior! haha!

  • Sammy September 6, 2010, 6:34 am

I love that pic of you, you look so free and happy! I don’t think I’d look that happy if I’d just run ten miles 😉 x

  • Ellen@FirednFabulous September 6, 2010, 10:14 am

I’ve never run more than 10 miles in my LIFE, so yeah, it seems crazy that that’s considered a taper run. Good job!

  • Chelsea @ Strawberry Sweat September 6, 2010, 11:14 am

Great run! The weather here is finally getting cooler; the past couple days it has been in the low 70s/high 60s! Yay for fall!

  • Kristy September 6, 2010, 10:56 pm

75?!? Send some of that weather back to Florida! 🙂

  • Chelsea September 9, 2010, 4:58 pm

where are you buying sesame cashews?? Did you/or do you know if you can make them homemade?? I cannot find them anywhere!!! (and no trader joe’s here) :/
