I truly love SAMMIES!

CIMG3411

Lunch featured one of my favorite ways to eat a sammie: in a nice, squishy hot dog bun.

CIMG3410

I also had grapes and celery on the side.  I always feel like a goddess when I eat a bunch of grapes… I just pretend someone else is feeding them to me (and fanning my face with a palm leaf).

Dessert: four squares of this lovely dark chocolate. Mmm.

My Favorite Quote

I wanted to share with you my favorite quote:

There is a desire within each of us, in the deep center of ourselves that we call our heart. We were born with it, it is never completely satisfied, and it never dies. We are often unaware of it, but it is always awake. It is the human desire for love. Every person in this earth yearns to love, to be loved, to know love. Our true identity, our reason for being, is to be found in this desire…

…love is the ‘why’ of life: why we are functioning at all, what we want to be efficient for… I am convinced it [love] is the fundamental energy of the human spirit, the fuel on which we run, the wellspring of our vitality. And grace, which is the flowing, creative activity of love itself, is what makes all goodness possible.

Love should come first; it should be the beginning of and the reason for everything.

~From "The Awakened Heart."

Nothing in the world can take the place of Persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan ‘Press On’ has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race.

“To live content with small means; to seek elegance rather than luxury, and refinement rather than fashion; to be worthy, not respectable, and wealthy, not rich; to listen to stars and birds, babes and sages, with open heart; to study hard, to think quietly, act frankly, talk gently, await occasions, hurry never, in a word, to let the spiritual, unbidden and unconscious, grow up through the common- this is my symphony.”

“Beyond a wholesome discipline; be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. No doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore, be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be, and whatever your labors and aspirations be in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace with your soul.”

That’s from Desiderata by Max Erhmann – the whole thing is incredible but I picked my favorite part. Good question, Caitlin!

  • Nancy March 31, 2009, 10:15 am

    Caitlin I have a question-

first of all, I LOVE your quote… I believe there is no limit on love… to give love and receive love is the most beautiful reward, in my opinion.

    okay, now my QUESTION-

This is in regards to running. I have always heard about many runners having knee problems because of the pressure it puts on them. I have been running for about two years now. In the past couple of days, I have ran quite a bit more than I usually do back-to-back. Yesterday, I simply ran 2 miles and was in PAIN at the end. I feel like my calves hurt so much-from my knees down to my ankles. Is that normal? Lately I’ve been so freaked out about hurting my legs/knees because I know if I’m in pain then my runs will become torture and nerve wrecking. My knee always cracks when I bend it and then flex it out… it doesn’t hurt or anything but it does make a little crack noise. Does that indicate anything? Should I be worried or do you think my legs might just need a rest day? Sorry for the long post but I know you have experience with knee issues so I figured you could give the best advice!

  • Caitlin at Healthy Tipping Point March 31, 2009, 10:24 am

nancy – to answer your question, NO it is not normal to be in pain when running, ever. your symptoms sound a lot like my knee condition, chrondomalcia. my knees make a very gross popping noise when i bend them as well because my cartilidge is worn down. the pain you described from your knee to your ankle is how my legs felt when i was training for my first marathon. it will go away, btu you need to stop running for a few weeks until you can run pain free. you should see a doctor about your knees regardless, wear knee sleeves, take glucosamine, and cut back on your mileage. that’s what i had to do. i’m sorry youre in pain!

I LOVE your quote! Here’s mine!

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond human measure, It is our Light, not our darkness, that frightens us. We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented and fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be?” -Nelson Mandela

    In relation to running:
“Your biggest challenge isn’t someone else. Its the ache in your lungs and the burning in your legs and the voice inside you that yells “Can’t!”. But you don’t listen, you just push harder. And you discover that the person you thought you were is no match for the person you really are.”

    1. “Its not where but who you are with that really matters” (DMB)

    2. “There are two paths you can go by and still time to change the road you’re on” (Led Zeppelin-Stairway to Heaven)

i keep all my favorite quotes in one file on my computer so here they are….

I’ll get you my pretty and your little dog too.

“May you pledge your love one to the other. May you share wedding cake and dance cheek to cheek. May your hearts capture memories no film could record. May you kiss in the moonlight on your honeymoon and remember together the first time you met. May you open your presents and write all your thank yous constantly mindful of how blessed you are. And as you eat on new dishes and sip from new glasses and sleep between new sheets and dry off with new towels, may you never forget – not for one single moment – that the very best gift you received was each other.”

You don’t have to see eye to eye to walk hand in hand. .Rick Warren

Pooh, promise you won’t ever forget about me. Not even when I’m 100?” “How old shall I be then?” “99.” “I promise.” “Forever and ever?” “Yes, Christopher Robin…forever and ever.”

BE KINDER THAN NECESSARY. EVERYONE IS FIGHTING SOME KIND OF BATTLE ..’ —UNKNOWN
    .
There comes a point in your life when you realize who really matters, who never did, and who always will.

My friend, if I could give you one thing, I would wish for you the ability to see yourself as others see you. Then you would realize what a truly special person you are.”

Always Something There to Remind Me Lyrics

    what lies behind us
    and what lies before us
    are tiny matters
    to
    what lies within us
    ralph waldo emerson

Sometimes the most imporant part of history is what we are making now

They outgrow us so much faster than we outgrow them. Jodi Picoult

the most important thing she has learned was that there is no way to be a perfect mother and a million ways to be a great one

I once heard a lady who had been married for over 60 years say, “the secret to our marriage is that neither one of us fell out of love at the same time.”

    “May those who love us, love us;
to those that don’t, may God
    turn their hearts;
but if He can’t turn their hearts, may He turn their legs, so we’ll know them by their limping

save your fork the best is yet to come

never argue with a fool, people might not know the difference

I don’t have a quote, but I do have a question that I would love for you to pose to your readers. It’s a seldom discussed aspect of a foodie’s life, but as you are my favorite blogger, I am hoping you might open the platform.

    Ahem, bowel movements.

Anyone not that regular despite eating a super-clean diet that is high in fiber (and I mean real fiber, not fake added fiber, and I also mean both insoluble “nature’s broom” and soluble “feel full” fiber)? Anyway too regular when they eat a flax pita? The questions are endless. Anyone gassy when they take B12 vitamins? Holistic help?
Anyone invariably needs to take a big dump after a night of drinking?

in a totally unrelated note.. I’ve been reading your blogs for a couple weeks (to keep me inspired to continue healthy eating..weight loss not really a goal)..and i never understood WHY the maple syrup was for dipping. but today for my afternoon snack (1 ww waffle + 1/2 peach), I portioned out what I normally use to drizzle over my waffle (1-2tbs, probably).. and I probably only used 1/2 tbsp! Amazing 🙂 thanks for the inadvertent tip!

This doesn’t relate much to the post, but is it possible to share what HR you try to stay in? I guess I never though about what range I should be in and I’m the same height and weight as you are so I thought you’d be a great starting point for my research! I just got myself a polar HRM so I figure I should set it to bother me during my runs!! 🙂 Thanks girl

By the way, completely cracking up at your grape goddess!!

  • Jessica March 31, 2009, 6:15 pm

There are too many to name, but these are the ones that I always try to remember for inspiration:

“Tho’ much is taken, much abides; and tho’/ We are not now that strength which in old days / Moved earth and heaven; that which we are, we are; / One equal temper of heroic hearts, / Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will / To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.”
    – ‘Ulysses’, Alfred Lord Tennyson

“Do not let your fire go out, spark by irreplaceable spark, in the hopeless swamps of the approximate, the not-quite, the not-yet, the not-at-all. Do not let the hero in your soul perish, in lonely frustration for the life you deserved, but have never been able to reach. Check your road and the nature of your battle. The world you desired can be won. It exists, it is real, it is possible, it is yours.”
    – Ayn Rand

I have three, but they are rather similar.

    1) Of all the words of tounge and pen the saddest are those it might have been. (idk)

    2) Life consists not in holding good cards, but in playing those you hold well. (Josh Billings)

    3) In three words I can sum up everything I know about life – it goes on. (Robert Frost)

I adore #3 so much it is actually engraved on the back of my i-pod!

  • Caitlin at Healthy Tipping Point March 31, 2009, 6:28 pm

kelli – re: poop. i asked husband this once, since he’s all holistic doctor now, and he said you should poop at least once a day. and yes, i totally get the beer shits. and pre-race shits. but beyond that, taking about poop makes me uncomofortable! 🙂 LOL

CDN.Erin – the dipping method saves soooo much syrup and hence, money!!

anon – i have a seriously high heart rate, based on what i’ve seen on blog bloggers. my heart rate is usually 160 – 195 when running. i posted this as a question once, and then general consensus from people’s responses was that everyone is different, and you just need to learn what is “working hard” for you.
